Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

Dont use widgets that want internet connection or you cannot control how often they updates itself.

Use autoconnect to close inactive 3g/wlan connection.

With these two you can get 24-48h+ normal in normal phone-like use.

Just unchec the device LED in device ON tab, don`t leave your GPS on if you`re not using maps, disable the orig. weather widget (constantly updating), and use only the shortcut when you need it or download new weather widget OMweather (beautiful + custom update schemes 2hr, 4hr, 24 hr etc.). Reducing number of home screens works too (I wouldn`t be able to live without them anymore though :).

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

i have 2 widgets updating every hour, and at least 8hrs 2.5g connected and 2hrs on wifi, 2 hrs of calls and 40 sms sent and received. my n900 do all those everyday and my bettery life seems to last from 12-20 hrs.

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

Do not use Wireless and always lock the screen after use. Do not play high graphic game or DrSNES.. Avoid bluetooth, and avoid too many widgets on screen, avoid brightness level, avoid flash contents video.

Mine Connected to Wifi for 7hours straight and Constantly on this forum, leaving about 6 windows opened and watched youtube and SMS, checking emails etc... Last me 24hours :D

List can go on lol.

an app called wifiswitcher. turns the wifi radio completely off in the status menu with a button.

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

Turn off 3G if you don't need it and use GSM mode. Turn your screen brightness down to 3.
Don't use the facebook widget, it's a real battery hog.

Doing this meant I could go from around 12 hours to 24 hours of use.

Over the weekend I turned off the "auto connect to WiFi" option, and yesterday had 49% battery left after 24 hours of use. That included calls, SMS, at least 2 hours on a bluetooth headset and a 2-3 hours using WiFi to check for updates, surf the web etc. (only switching on WiFi when needed).

Run Htop and check that CPU is idling (~10%) anything flogging the CPU is also consuming power.

If it is not, try to find out what is using the CPU and make a decision if you need it?

youve basicially got to turn off everything that makes the N900 whats it is, GPS, 3G, WI-FI, WIDGETS, HOME SCREENS, ETC

i never understood the N900's overall size in relation to its battery when compared to other devices

You could try the Smart Powersaving hack. I get 2-2.5 days of battery life running e-mail all the time, surfing the net occasionally, watching a few short videos, listening to podcasts,... Beware of the risks however: Some people report minor graphical glitches after using the patch, few even experience sudden reboots. For me these issues never materialized, but your mileage may vary.

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

As root you can do in X-Terminal:

Code:

echo 30 >/proc/sys/vm/swappiness
This will make the N900 write less to the swap partition (it will still swap out when needed though, so no worries), resulting in less operations on the flash disk resulting in a more responsive device with longer battery life time.

IMHO it's more than just a placebo.

the only time i notice battery drain is when you keep ur messenger service online, like gtalk or yahoo or skype. i tried to keep 2 accounts online and my device couldn't last more than 8hrs, without that it runs 2 days with single charge.

just sit it out for a bigger battery, it has to come soon

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

Is there a shortcut to disable 3G phone use or do I need to go to settings everytime I want to use a non wifi data connection? I used the n900 for several weeks without a simcard and got a battery life of aprox 5 days with some Wifi and gps use. No I have the sim installed and only get 20 hours max on it. This is without wifi or gsp, an max 10 min calls and 5 texts. So I assume it has something to do with the phone app being active. I checked the cpu and it is steady at 2.1% and Xorg using 1.7.

There is a 3G / GSM mode selection applet for that.

Did you add these commands into a /etc/event.d script or some other place so that it is executed automatically? I would like to do that, but I am afraid I could brick my device if this is executed too early..

I Love this phone but i find it ******** that i leave the house with full batt and 4 hours later its almost dead. I dont have any widgets on my desktop, i used just shortcuts to stuff. All i do is browse the web and download a few things, and the batt goes to half way within an hour, And ive always wanted to know how a 3g connection uses more batt than being connected to 2g or 2.5g .....

In the corresponding bugreport some guy advised to edit /etc/pmconfig instead of putting it in some event.d script. However, as there are reports that the device might act weirdly under active smart power saving, I do run these commands manually after each reboots. As I reboot only every few weeks this does not require a big effort, but on the other hand it is easy to turn off the hack simply by rebooting in case problems occur.

I tried it via /etc/pmconfig, but experienced some issues, cf. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=48207 . But anyways, egoshin's advice suggests that the order of the commands matters and that cannot be achieved via /etc/pmconfig I am afraid.

I was thinking about a startup script that would call a smartreflex-enabler script in MyDocs. If there was an issue, then you would just connect the N900 in USB mass storage mode and the smartreflex-enabler script would not be available..

the fb widget and weather only updates if you on that desktop, my main desktop has not widgets except media player and FM tramitter.

my other desktops have active widgets like fb and weather, i assume the only update when you goto that desktop. well thats what i have noticed, correct me if i'm wrong.

No seeing as its using an active internet connection it doesnt matter if its on another desktop im pretty sure it still gets used and refreshed somhow

I could not get the startup script with the external script running, so I took the risk and put a file with the following content to /etc/event.d:

Code:

start on started hildon-desktop

script
        echo "1" >/sys/power/sr_vdd2_autocomp
        echo "1" >/sys/power/sr_vdd1_autocomp
end script

This works and my device is alive so far... :)

Butthurt.
Read it already, just wanted to get a say from everyone on how well things worked in their experience. And I was hoping for more than those things because I already do most of them anyway.
If my post was a waste of time, don't waste your time responding to it.

Probably, yes.

But obviously there is some reason why Nokia's developers think that having swappiness at 100 is a good idea for the device. I've been rather surprised by that fact myself. Does anyone know what the reasoning behind this is?

Regards,
Chris.

P.S.: Oh, by the way, ossipena ... just in case you aren't aware of it, you're acting more and more like a dweeb. While I can relate to your obvious frustration somewhat, lashing out at people and generally resorting to offensive behaviour will not help. And, as has been suggested by others, you really should reconsider using that "Maemo Greeter" signature until you have simmered down again.

Re: ANYTHING I can do to preserve battery life please

I installed wifi switcher and turned off wlan, I also go offline with IM's when not in use... although over the past 36 hours I have had very low usage; occasional phone call, occasional internet browsing, occasional IM (Jabber/Facebookchat), for no more than five minutes at a time.

Result 36 hours on one charge.
