Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

From what I know, it should be possible to run Symbian^3 (and maybe ^2) in the N900, however it would require a fair amount of work to make it happen.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

It is definitely possible.
However, I don't want anything from Symbian, since Maemo is vastly superior to it.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

Simple answer: No, because the Symbian operating systems are all closed source...hopefully someone would prove me wrong :(

Well, you're wrong in that symbian isn't closed source.

There are many things that Symbian does that Maemo doesn't...

Yes yes... We have groups in address book in Maemo. We can assign different rings to different contacts. The built-in MMS functionality is perfect. USSD is handled very well. We can sync via SyncML over the web... so on... and on...

n how fast will it become :).. a real fast version of N97.. maybe we can survive on Symbion n switch to meego or maemo in some tym wen it will be polished either by nokia or the professional community.. which, for the non technical people lyk me is notpossible

(Doesn't this thread belong to other subforum?)

I would recommend waiting for the new Symbian^3 phones. They are supposed to be right around the corner.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

If you want symbian then why not just buy an n97? Why run s60 on the n900 to gain some apps but lose some great things like multi desktop, a proper browser with full flash, divx playback, etc. I was a s60 user for 5 years and after having the n900 i love Maemo, i still use s60 as a second device (e72) but from now on Maemo will be my choice for my main device, i hope s60 getts better with symbian^3, its a great platform but needs a better browser and better video playback suport IMO

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

A N900 with multiboot function for Symbian^3, Maemo(Meego) and a "normal Linux" like Ubuntu or so would be more than great, and should be possible. When you look at the xda-developers you can see almost everything is possible, if someone cares about.

*Dreammode on*
N900 with multiboot Maemo(Meego), S^3, IphoneOS and maybe some other stuff
*Dreammode off*

That is not possible i think because of the iphoneOS, but wouldn't it be a dream?

But to come back to topic:
If someone gets symbian running on N900 i would kiss his a... :D
Symbian gets more interesting because of the mobile ESL comming soon. Seems again maemo will "look into the hole" ....
in the last days i really doubt n900 was the right choise. ESL is comming to symbian, and all the other stuff always comes for the iphone... :( i want to have tv on my n900 too...... (and yes i know worldtv, but it doesn't provide casual german tv, so its uninteresting)

While i do not support fanboys, thinking of how bad it is that you have bought the n900 just because it doesnt have a TV(rofl),is plain stupid. There are much more important things that the n900 is badly missing, such as a decent Maps/navigation application, and not to mention that Ovi Store is empty.

moerderameise 2010-03-30 17:39

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

Well navi with sygic is ok. OVI Store i'm not really missing, because loading apps goes over other ways, and the rest of ovi i don't use.
So for me an actually missing tv app is the worst thing, yes, interests are different, and i'm proud to say i'm a tv junky ;) i bought the LG DVB-T phone just because of tv, and i "threw" my n95 into the corner for that....

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

I forgot where, but I read a report about a developer getting Android to work on the N900 and being able to dual boot with it. If that is true, then that would be something I would be interested in. But I am hoping that MeeGo will provide more apps with Nokia and Intel working together now, so there wouldn't be a need to get another OS just so I can have more apps.

i believe Symbian^3 is coded as an open source, no idea what happened to Symbian^2

Some people say it's Symbian^1 with the homescreen (N97)
Not sure about it.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

I agree that symbian dual booted on the n900 would be great. the things that let the n97 down such as bad c space etc wouldnt exist on the n900. there would be a ton of diff apps, free nav. im not saying symbian is better... no chance, but running on the n900 it would be pretty smooth and would provide an alternative os.

i asked this question when symbian was announced as open source, and a lot of people agreed that it would be awesome.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

symbian^3 UI runs at 60fps so speed, scrolling, transitions on symbian being laggy and slow is thing of the past and its designed to run on hardware like the n900 qwerty/touch hybrids and graphic accelerated
there is project on symbian site they are running symbian on off the shelf components
running it on already built devices should be easier if all drivers are available

smoku 2010-03-30 18:30

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

Dual booting Symbian is a half-solution.
What would be awesome, is Symbian emulation layer allowing running Symbian apps in sandboxed Symbian environment under Maemo.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

Even if all the hardware works perfectly with symbian, isn't it overkill? I mean, in most cases it would be nice to have a fast OS, but the speed won't really be useful on S60.

Of course you could downclock everything and have a longer battery life....

Symbian^1 is essentially N97 UI, Symbian^2 would have been the first real OS repackaged by Symbian Foundation, but it was meant for manufacturers that where already been using 5th edition(so Nokia, SE and Samsung). In the end it was left out by the manufacturers.

Symbian^3 is graphically superior to any other Symbain release and is a big jump from Symbian^2. It will be rather eye candy heavy UI when it comes to effects. When it comes example kinetic scrolling i honestly think it will be great with Symbian^3.

Yes i'm a big Symbian fan so i'm very interested to see Symbian^3 in action on N8 or E7. Thought not really interested to see it inside N900.

Re: Is Symbion OS on N900 possible??

I remember that VMWare was working on virtualisation for the N810 about 6 months ago at their convention in Sydney. Not sure where the project is at but was interesting to see that the N810 was made to boot different ARM based OS's (Native, Android, BB from memory and S60 was meant to be supported as well as WM).

Cant find anything on the net concrete about it however - although they did have a live demo that did allow multiboot

Would running Symbian on the N900 then make it a phone and not an internet tablet ;-)
