[Announce] Multilist
 

Multilist is a task management program that includes

• Categories within task lists
• Manual rotation to portrait mode
• "New", "Active", and "Complete" task states

Based off of an earlier thread, I've taken over maintainership of Multilist, cleaned up the code/ui, and added support for Maemo 5.

but nevertheless the app is very useful, for instance for a
shopping list. the chosen desktop icon is a matter of taste.

The icon, like Quicknote, was the existing icon. I would love to have a replacement icon for both.

I've made a work around for the check mark bug and have promoted multilist to Maemo 4.1 Extras and Maemo 5 Extras Testing

If you are referring to the update in extras-devel:

• To fix a bug I had to change the database. I don't recommend updating if you have mission critical stuff in it. I felt this was acceptable as multilist wasn't in Extras yet. You need to "rm -Rf ~/.multilist.s3db ~/.multilist*"
• There is another bug preventing launch when you have certain columns enabled. I will be working on fixing this.

Yes friend, I did the update yesterday and it does not open anymore.
uninstalled and installed again but not resolved.

if it were possible to customize the title of each column, it would be very interesting.

I think you should try adding kinetic scrolling and making the rows taller (more finger friendly)

I tried to change the scroll pane to a hildon pannable area directly, but it broke the editing of fields and cheching items

If you look in the changelists, it actually says makes a comment that I enabled panning but then disabled it. I would have to do the funky edit mode stuff or having editing out of line.

Finger friendliness could be improved overall.

Is it possible to have an integration with Remember the Milk? Its great! And have all the APIs really well documented!

By integration I mean: download all the tasks, work offline and when have internet access, sync it.

For a previous project I've actually played with the RTM api and use RTM frequently myself. My priorities lie in other places at the moment though. I would be willing to review patches to add it though.

epage; this is an excellent tool and much more flexible
than GPE-ToDo that I am currently using.

Just one question, would it be possible to move Items between Categories?
This is extremely important if you follow methodologies such as GTD or Scrum.

(for example parking items in “backlog” category and moving them to “active” category when you start working on)

Many thanks for taking over and porting this app! It's nearly exactly what I was looking for. Even if there is room for improvement I already love this app!

One suggestion: when doing a search it would be helpful having wildcard search, maybe optional. Actually one has to type the beginning of an item's name which makes it difficult finding for example an item in a list of items which have the same prefix. Probably you could add a common wildcard symbol which could be used, like a dot or a star. Or one could enable it via settings to have all-time full text search.

Huh, I guess I haven't played with search all that much to even notice how funkily it worked. As long as there isn't some crazy horrible code preventing me from doing this, this sounds like something I'll get in by the next release. So I don't forget, please file an enhancement:

I'd love to help you in this way but to be honest I don't want to create just another account on maemo.org. Once I can access all places using one single account I'll be filing bugs and do everything I can to improve apps I'm using.

I would note that I would prefer to keep the UI simple and XML would be fairly complex to query the user how they want to map free-form xml to a set of lists.

Import/export of csv could work well and I think would have value.

yes, csv can be extracted from a file xls (Excel) or imported from a database.

I have a website php / mysql and would like to have data on the N900 for offline research...
was in this way with Smartlist2go in the Palm Centro.

As soon as I finish porting nqa to Diablo (should be done in an hour or so) I'll add csv support. Who knows, maybe I'll event move to csv as the backing store, removing the misplaced use of a database and allow more flexible colums. One can dream at least.

I just pushed 0.3.11 to extras-devel

• Saves the filter on restart
• Search finds text in the middle of titles, not just the beginning
• Import/Export (import appends rather than merges for now)

What's next for our Diablo knight in shining armour? Will you clean up the excellent but long deserted Yellow Notes app? I'd think it would be up your alley with it being an editor, etc... Nudge, nudge.... :)

I'm actually playing with the new release from -devel. Latest one (0.3.11-2) works just fine, but I first installed 0.3.11-1 which refused to start. Obviously you just spotted out the problem and fixed it. Great!

Some more suggestions:

• search works excellent now. Next step could be implementing regex-support - but imho you can put that on the very bottom of the todo list
• more important could be a filter/search by one of the additional fields. Actually search only queries the title. Being able to query the note field too may be very comfortable. Also I don't see a possibility to filter items by priority, quantity or any of the given fields. Would that be possible?
• export creates a csv file with a uid in it. Could you explain how to create that uid, so one could create a similar file for importing data? And probably you could add the possibility to select which list to export. ATM all lists are exported into one file
• there is a field called 'date' but I just don't know what it's supposed to be. There is no date selector and I can enter any data I like to. What's the deeper meaning of this field?
• Would it be possible to have separate settings for the lists? I'd like to set up different lists where I'd need different fields enabled but these settings always apply to all lists.
• My biggest wish: could you in any way implement a possibility to create a daily entry? I need to track my allergic reactions and would like to have an entry for every day either with the date as title or using a working date field where the actual date is pre-filled. So I'd just need to tap on "add entry" and have a basic entry for that day and then just needed to fill in the strength of reaction. Multilist would be perfect for that, but entering a date is a pain on this device.

This would probably be best done once the backend is changed. Right now it does search by doing an SQL query.

That could work well. I think the UI I would put on top of this is a touch selector on the left of the search bar that lets you select which field (or all) to search. This might be able to be done with the current backend but a new backend would make it a lot easier.

I actually ignore the uid on import. I realized after that I probably should have not exported it. If/when I make import/export more flexible is when I'd fix that so as to not break compatibility.

I don't consider all lists being exported too big of a deal right now. Either right a fancy regex in your favorite text editor to remove all unwanted lines or open it in a spreadsheet to manipulate to your hearts content.

I could see it being helpful to eventually do though. The UI would be simple, just a touch selector or lists (and an all option) with the current list highlighted. I just dislike adding another dialog to the process.

Bringing up a date selector on selecting that field would be a very good idea. I like.

Depending on how I organize a new backend, this would be pretty easy. The difficult part is deciding how to handle global import/export.

Right now multilist is very simple and doesn't actually deal with dates (besides having a field. I don't know how much I'd want to get into this area due to its affect on complexity of both code and UI. It'd be good to note though if I ever get some brilliant idea on how to do this or to encourage someone to write a brilliant patch to do this.

OK, maybe you could implement an implicit AND-concatenation when entering multiple search items? Or a user defined selection between AND, OR and "one string".

You're right, one just has to know that one has to deal with all lists and first need to select the interesting list.

Do these settings actually need to be exported or imported? You could internally deal with some sort of UID for a list and storing the settings according to that UID (UID = title?). Export/Import would not affect these settings as the structure of the data cannot change. Importing new lists would make defining new settings for that list essential (or you could apply a set of default settings or the last used ones or whatever).

Having a date selector for the designated date field would just do the job, so there would not be a need to extra dealing with dates.

I found I wasted too much time hunting through forums trying to find everyone's bugs and ideas so I've given up on that and work almost exclusively off of items reported to b.m.o. I sometimes enter things for others but its better use of my time to be programming with how thinly spread I am with all of my programs (and wanting to create more).

If you are going to be sticking around, it'll be worth creating one more account.

After upgrading to latest version, I still see both lists I had previously, but none of the items I had in either. They were'nt important anyway, but is this expected ?

From what version to what version? A couple of releases ago I changed the database schema but other than that there should be no loss of data. The log file (~/.multilist/mutlilist.log or Ctrl+l to put it in your paste buffer) might provide me some insight into what went wrong.
