For the lazy from meego.com

Quote:

The available MeeGo repositories now include the operating system base from the Linux kernel to the OS infrastructure up to the middleware layer. The downloadable images available now will boot from a CD or from a USB stick, but since the MeeGo User Experiences for the usage models are not yet included in today's MeeGo core, these images will boot into terminal.

I'm very interested to see what the brave souls who installed this have to say. First impressions of a new OS always fascinate me.

Oh so its command line, I had read some where but I was just trying my luck !! never the less...this is a great step forward, really hope the final version actually makes it to the N900 :)

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

oo oo how do I install this on my N900......

.........only kidding, but expect a lot of users really asking the above :D

Will it enable multitouch and portrait mode?

:D

sorry, couldn't resist...

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

If those users ask that, tell them they should not install it.
This is ONLY for developers and experts one.
Those ALREADY know how to install it and are aware of the risks in installing this VERY ALPHA image.

DO NOT install it as this is REALLY the BASE of a MeeGo system.
Very bare, only an xterm opens up and nothing else.
There's no UI (no MeeGO User Experience is provided yet), thus there is NO point at all for those users to install it.

Please, let's try to make this clear to all the people out there.

This is NOT MeeGo 1.0alpha or whatever.
This is a Developer Preview (let's call it that way?).

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

Actually, the very good question one should ask is:

How can we dual boot this and Maemo ? :)

:p

UPDATE: actually: http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/Meego_chroot_install_on_N900

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

I can't wait til some CLI/text warrior out there builds a 100% CLI interface that rivals current maemo 5's features.

Let's develop an ASCII Qt View :)

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

Here's chroot instructions so don't have to flash, reflash or destroy anything.

EDIT:

Sorry, didn't see the edit above.

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

On a silly sidenote: I had MeeGo base system running on my N810 with 2.6.33 kernel (+ Termanas, luke-jr's patches) some weeks ago. It should be possible to get it bootstrapping fairly easily still with the current kickstart files.

Any takers to start a MeeGo hardware adaptation for N8x0?

I am very happy to see this day and see the N900 supported.

Kudos to the teams for reaching this milestone.

anything in this early code that we wouldn't have expected? or is it so little that there's no room for surprises so far?

Some might consider the images for "Aava" newsworthy, at this time already:

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

It's probably too early to say but what happens to the "closed" parts of the n900?
e.g. phone functionality and gps hardware?

Without these basic elements the MeeGo port is of limited use.

Even so seeing the terminal (screenshot earlier) on the n900 is really exciting.

Well done and thank you to everyone who were involved.

:)

jflatt 2010-03-31 21:29

Re: MeeGo Source Now Out

If you were to look around, you would see that there is a "closed" image for meego, as well as an "open" one.

Cool :-) Obviously I've missed a couple of episodes because I thought we were still stuck in the state described here. Do you have a pointer to something describing the current situation, especially what bits are still missing?

Definitely interested (though I'm not a kernel hacker), where do we start?
