[HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

Someone has to quickly put an end to this nonsense before it becomes a habit for too many.

I'm talking about fake threads, april fools-even-tho-it's-not-the-1st-of-april, trolling, and what makes a far too big percentage of what i am reading here on this forums.

Is'nt this place supposed to be sort of serious ?
I mean, i use mameo.org forums to track apps, get help, provide help when i can, share thoughts about the whole experience and try to make it better by collaborating with coders out there...

so to you people trying to be funny, or pissed at PR1.x MeeGoo or whatever

GET A LIFE !

and 'please' go troll elsewhere...

I wish that moderators wouldnt let those threads live and simply delete them.

Its just impossible to ignore them anymore, they're all over the "active topics" place !

I hope that most people out there share my thought, and that we can go back to using this place for the best !

Cheers

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

Indeed, I hope with the new MeeGo forums moderators can actually ban or remove those trolling threads.

Too much energy is spent on that with no result. Besides when someone tells a new guy "use the search" he will but most often will get just those stupid threads

That's democracy for you. It is not state controlled.

But yes, I agree - enough of these endless false threads about PR 1.2 being released. April first is over now so lets forget about these and get back to useful threads please!

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

I totally agree with this.

The only thing people want to read here is usefull info about Maemo/Meego/N900.

I don't want to read 70 pages of people complaining that PR1.2 is not released yet.

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

The forum is run on a phpBB platform. Banning and limiting access is easy enough to do through the administration control panel. I'm sure that if the mods saw fit then the trolls would be banned. As it is this is a very active forum and for an administrator to be online 24/7 and constantly working to keep the forum clean is a massive task for anyone.

I used to run a forum for 300 active members and that was hard enough. This community spans a helluva lot more than 300 members.

I personally feel for the admins that have to moderate this forum.

The answer is simple.

DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!

What can I say, I'm a troll, so if admins wants to ban or kill me, here I am.
Kisses. The troll.

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

Let me suggest an alternative solution.
I wouldn't care if the troll posts weren't in the center of attention. Maybe we could have a forum category that is not shown in the active topics section. So trolls could do what they like there and no one who isn't interested is bothered with it. That would possibly spark less dissent since we wouldn't give trolls a new target ("maemo isn't open, they censor our opinions").
And btw. i find trolling is an art and troll posts can be entertaining and interesting if the art is mastered. Unfortunately i see more heavy-handed pricks here on tmo than trolls who master their art. :(

My bad....

None the less admin panels will have virtually the same functionality. I said phpBB because phpBB code works in all the posts - but I'll take that one and like it Pel :)

No, i mean as an alternative to deletion one could move the posts to a place where they don't disturb us.

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

Ignore the trolls and wot not. Threads whining about them are nothing more or less than what the trolls do themselves.

If behind the scene the moderator decide to ban, delete, remove or whatever else. Trolls feed off reactions & responses. So dont give them a reaction or a response and they dont get the attention they ultimately seek.

Go on you know you can do it ;)

As for moderation. Polite moderation is one thing but heavy moderation can and sometimes does turn into removing anything that the 'supreme posters' turn their nose up at.

If threads and/or postings have useful advisory or evolutionary value to Maemo then whats the issue no matter how elementry or pointless they might be in the eyes of others then let them be.

If however the thread fails rules along those or similar lines and the individual clearly wants to be the forum jester then call the mods in.

Unfortunately that would require, again, a mod to be online 24/7 to do all the moving.

I love spam. Spam is amongst the most inventive effluent verbal diahorrea that is elucidating in more ways than a banana shotgun could ever be. Bring on the spam.

I like this idea. Works out for everyone. People who want to be trolls or read their posts can and people who actually want to find out information don't have to waste their time. But then again trolls would not post in the correct section and we would end up with the same problem and it wouldn't be practical for mods to move all these posts, there are too many.

Also those april fools jokes stopped being funny after the first one.

well, i was ignoring them at first, but now they are over-represented.
Many times, with the serach tool for serious matter, i had troll entries coming up top of the list.

i've been reporting posts, tho, but it seems hopeless.

And to those saying that it is impossible to be online 24/7 to delete the trolls, i'd say it is not necessary...
Would take me 5 mins to delete the 10 major trolling threads each day.

I noticed something funny. The OP has features of a troll post.

1. Thread Title: HEAVY REQUEST .. .lol ... I WANT IT SO BADLY AND EVERYONE WHO DISAGREES IS A DUMBASS!!!111
2. Thread Title: Please moderators ! ... Says nothing about the intent.
3. Poll answers insult everyone who disagrees.

IMO the poll should be deleted! lol :D

There is a solution to this.
Simply ignore those threads.
If you stop posting replies, they will disappear from Active Topics.
Unfed trolls die very quickly. If we ignore them, they will stop coming here and find other playground.

I have Sygic, so I don't need ovimaps, neither portrait mode for gui... but I need a n900 without bugs. WE ALL NEED IT... SAYING AMEN TO NOKIA, ALL IS FINE, DOES NOT HELP. N900 is a product, no a way of life.

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

I'd imagine moderators have enough guidelines to ban individuals who are abusing this facility.

Banning and censorship are surely the last resort and the more mature response to the childish postings would be to tolerate them.

The Whingers and Trolls may be sad individuals, but their combined opinions represent something of how Maemo, Maego, Nokia and the development & politics of our interests are perceived beyond the developer community, even if that perception is mistaken.

Although this forum is not a true democracy, I'm sure we'd all want to uphold democratic values by not attempting to silence the voices of those who do not necessarily share our values.

I think we all come to recognise the degenerate threads quite quickly and can avoid them if we want to.

The poll above is biased and not becoming of a community like ours.

Tolerance and dignity must prevail

i think trolls are a necessary evil to keep an open and fair network such as maemo.org

after all, we don't want to turn this into a dictatorship. do we??

and most of us can detect a troll thread in the first post, so maybe the onus should be on us - the members - to pass the threads on by.

we run the risk of alienating real talent because we develop a reputation for being a dictatorship rather than a freedom-of-speech democracy.

just my op

That doesn't help either. It will land in their trash and no one will hear about the problem. There must be an open place where such problems are visible to everyone.

Jesuska, sorry, but you forgot the money concept. I don't want to show the light to Nokia, but aware potential buyers that something is wrong at n900 born... if they fix it, ok, if they don't... yesterday my fifth friend was oriented to buy non-Nokia phone.
Anyway, I will do, like you, what I want, not what I was toled to do.

deleting unwanted stuff would be the apple way. i don't think we're quite there yet.

but i do think that threads with obviously bad intentions should get closed. IMHO that's enough to keep trolls away. once they realise they can't provoke any reaction (because no one can answer to their threads), they'll leave soon.

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

If a troll's thread grows, it may be your fault if...

1. You participate by responding to that thread. By doing this you feed them attention and you bump it up so it attracts the attention of more readers.

2. You read the thread and let it affect your emotion. Without sufficient control, you're bound to respond to it, which will also feed the trolls. (ie: creating threads like this :))

Forum moderation is one thing, but one of the strengths of this forum is that moderation is kept to a minimal to encourage communication and ideas exchange at all levels.

If we all act like grown ups, no one needs to call up their parents to straighten anyone up. If you find someone immature, don't go down to their level and start slinging muds to each other; be the adult and lead by example.

Flandry 2010-04-02 12:01

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

Since we're all trolling in a trolling thread, let me say some things.

(1) First off, some of you are really ignorant, and behaving childish to boot. This forum is not a Nokia company forum. They have one, and if your intent is to whine/complain/agitate/disrupt/troll/bother/etc. Nokia, then this is not the place. The only people whose time you waste doing that here are other users and those who volunteer (or in a few cases are paid) to work on Maemo-related issues. Again, maemo.org is not Maemo and not owned or operated by Nokia.

(2) To those agitating for more control of the forum, i suggest you look into its origins and previous discussions of the matter. Reggie has a very hands-off approach to moderating, and in general the rest of us follow that lead. In the few cases where we (moderators) try to draw the line a bit closer to where it would be in many other fora, we're met with opposition by those who don't want this anything but a free community. I don't need crap from useless curmudgeons in my life, but i face it every time i try to deviate from the free-for-all in my moderation.

(3) Yes, it would be nice if Off-Topic didn't show up in Active Topics. That is, after all, the exact place you're talking about: it already exists. The starter of this thread is doing nothing to help the problem because he should have started this thread either in Off-Topic if it's another pointless bit of failed satire, or Community if he was serious about it.

I've opted for a 'Rumors' thread here:

I'd like all these nonsense postes moved to a rumors section.

A simpler solution is described in this thread:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=48148&page=2

However, it sunk down because the "active threads" show mostly the new trolling...

Actually i was thinking about a separate section for trolls. That would make the off-topic section a nicer place for random talk.

That is ludicrous.First of all, fora are NOT democracies. Maybe benevolent dictatorships at best which I am perfectly fine with. You have no right to post on this or other fora - it is a privilege which can be revoked. As for trolls being useful, I see zero evidence of that. Disruption and argumentative whining never lead to anything positive.

No reason to lump joke threads in with trolling. I don't see any real harm in April Fool's jokes. Heck, Google renamed themselves "Topeka" for a day and I didn't see anything break. ;)

But complaints about true trolling do have merit IMO.

Most of the crap I read on here is from genuine users who feel they have been ripped off. They aren't here to cause a fuss they just want what they paid for and this is just their place to vent their frustration. Sure its not the most intelligent thing to do but it happens none the less. This thread is useless imo, If you don't like them, don't reply.

zail 2010-04-02 17:44

Re: [HEAVY REQUEST] Please moderators !

Having only been here a short while I've learned to recognize troll threads. In the beginning I admit to having fed them mainly due to their visibility. However, I now mostly ignore them. As others have said, self moderation is the key - troll ignoring causes them to loose interest.

I think there are also various newbie posts which are considering the same as trolling as the person so obviously hasn't searched for the answer to the topic first - part of this is obviously laziness on the part of those people but I don't think that the "quality" (ahem) of the Search function helps... It takes a while to realize that Power Search is much more useful.

Jokes are good but repeated jokes are tedious!

So, I guess my view can be summed up as:

- Starve the Trolls

- Attempt to be nice to newbies for a short while (even if them make exceedingly dumb posts) unless they prove themselves to be trollish

- Perhaps try and restructure the forum presentation in some way so that searching is easier and troll spawn doesn't dominate?

- Only post a joke if it's funny and hasn't been done before :)

(Oh, and I think the poll attached to this thread is too simplistic so am not taking part)

First of all, whether they were ripped off or not is debatable and, frankly, irrelevant. That is why almost every vendor has a return policy. This is a COMMUNITY site. Not a place to vent their frustration. If they want to vent they should go over to the official Nokia forum and leave the community alone.
