Do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

hi all,
im always on maemo.org on my n900 but find it hard to use sometimes .... my main gripe is when i want to view the last page of a thread i have to get my stylus out to click the tiny numbers
or
if im in the middle of a massive thread i cant even see the last page number or words last page so have to keep clicking the highest page number i can see until i get to the end of the thread.

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

yes, I do.

Can be a plan to keep the threads short. Massive threads always go Off Topic ;)

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

I don't have any problem navigating t.m.o on my N900, I never miss the number with my fingernail. But I prefer having the stylus out anyway.

The other webpage I spend any much time on, however, isn't very N900 friendly.

I agree on the limited page number list. The small numbers are annoying. but easily dealt with sans-stylus: just double-tap on the word "page" and it zooms way in so that the page numbers are really big. Then click the one you want with no problems.

ha I read this and thought it might be a complaint about too many N810 related posts.

I fully agree!

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

yup, i have same problem. if im catching up with a large thread i have to navigate to the top to move to next page... not that bad! but this is the website im on mostly!

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

I often want to see just the threads in Applications. So I look and they start scrolling automatically, fast enough that I can't click on a header -- I get the one before or after. I have tried to click a header three times and got the wrong one every time.

So I go to my netbook and have no problem, no unwanted scrolling.

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

i use large fonts when browsing as in many sites the text is just too small for me to read (getting old...)
That makes the problems with maemo.org even worst.

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

works fine. just zoom to the size you want to read.

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

its also amazing how many people dont search or try to fix some of the issues :)

the theme used at standard is designed to be pc friendly, not n900 friendly.
try (on a pc) changing your theme to the dark lite theme....

t'will work fine on ya n900 after.

Klerezooi 2010-04-04 16:43

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

1. Double tap on the page numbers
2. Click on the desired huge page number
3. ????
4. profit.

I have never misclicked a link thanks to double tap, I would think everyone would be aware of this basic function.

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

hey noobmonkey, how do i change to dark lite theme, i've searched my settings but cant find it???

festivalnut 2010-04-04 16:51

Re: do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

yup i was thinkin much the same, receiving private mail is a pain since it only shows about 2/3 rds of the message, only way i've found of reading them is to enter the text field and right arrow along the page. bit awkward!

oooh that minimalist theme does fit better, but i think it sucks so changed back!

Okay I have the following options:
Classic light
--Classic Dark
Minimalist Light
--Minimalist Dark

By lite I guess you are referring to minimalist...works fine now, thanks! :)

How is this specific to N900? Do other NITs not exist? And why post it in the maemo-5 forum? It is about the website not the n900 or maemo, right?

I thought this thread was going to be about hostility to the flood of clueless newbies since N900 was released :-)

And,

Please provide option to filter out all threads with key word 'iphone'.

Maybe instead of saying it "sucks" you could provide helpful feedback to the designer?

I understand you think the minimalist theme that I have spend many hundreds of hours working on over the last few years sucks. Any comment on why it sucks or how to make it suck less? Or should I just have to deleted so you can keep complaining and I can save time.

People like you is why I find it hard to commit to maemo.org like I have in the past. If you think you can do a better minimalist theme them do it or atleast write a worth while post about what could be improved.

Yes he was talking about Minimalist... Just a Note: I know the text size is somewhat large if you already have font size set to large it is being fixed now.

That has way too much potential to be abused. For example:
Don't like what a member says? "sage" his/her threads by posting "iphone" in it.

Re: Do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

Just a tip,

Do not use your nail to click on links. use your finger.

The N900 has software that detects whether you are using a stylus or your finger and if it detects the later, it allocates the click to the most appropriate target.

Calibrating the screen with your finger also helps.

When you use your nail, the phone thinks you are using a stylus.

Hope this helps.

maemo.org IS N900 friendly

jakiman 2010-04-08 10:18

Re: Do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

Not it's not.

It's impossible to browse the maemo.org talk forums on the N900 sometimes unless you resort to modifying the actual URL.

Try browsing the overclock thread for instance. I cannot see the page numbers properly nor the next button.
Same when I go to the subscription list. Many of the threads doen't display properly and are cut off.

Can't the website be obtimized so that it's actually fully functional at 800 pixels wide? It isn't right now. At least not the talk forums.

Did you change your theme to the dark theme (Light version?) - works fine for me :D

everything is just like the computer...everything looks and works fine

Re: Do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

minimalistic is way way to big.
i have classic light and that is fine for the font. i dont want bigger fonts i just want better navigation.

for example i always just press in tmo new posts.. thats my entry point, problem is that some how on my N900 i dont have the first unread icon before a thread any more! if i go to my laptop that has ofcourse the same preferences (which is also not so nice i would love that 1 account could have different stylesheets/theme i think this shouldnt be stored at the server but in a cookie) i do see the go to first new message in a topic. No idea why those are gone on the N900.

but i would love to have a theme that the go to new message in the new posts list is very big and easy to press. and that the navigation pages are also much bigger and easy to press.
now going to the first new message in a topic i can do 2 things, press last page and hopefully i dont jump to far or go first to he first page and press there first unread. which is quite an annoying 2 click jump...

I guess its best explained as a picture.

Note: page number its on vs the page numbers displayed

Note: smileys cut off

What I'm wondering is that is it a problem with the browser in handling the page or with T.M.O layout?

It's not a fault with the browser. It happens also with any other browser at 800 pixels wide. (try resizing your browser on your PC to a smaller size)

I did ask a while back if MicroB can be specified a certain fixed "virtual" resolution width. But nobody knew how to or nobody cared. Hmm. Maybe I'll revive that thread as more smart people now use the N900. :p

Can't see this entire page on N900

When I view this talk.maemo.org from the N900 browser, it cuts off the last part of the thread rating which includes going to the last page of threads on threads with many posts. Is this a known bug or is it something in my configuration?

Descalzo 2010-05-02 03:22

Re: Can't see this entire page on N900

It's just the way it is. On the very bottom of the page there's a pull-down menu that says --talk.maemo.org. On my N900 I selected one of the minimalist ones, and it works all right.

The thread "Can't see this entire page on N900" with two posts has been merged into this thread.

Hmm, thanks for the tip. 'All right' is true -- more functional than the default one but far from ideal.

Anyone up for making a 't.m.o' app, in the spirit of the 90 percent of the iphone apps that are just mobile optimized websites?

Re: Do you wish maemo.org was more N900 friendly?

k i didn't read all the pages, just the last two, and it seems the problem is how the n900 handles the layout of some pages (say pr 1.2 speculation thread for example) and cuts off part of the navigation at the bottom of the page, right?
if that's the problem, then here's the easy solution: just zoom out a bit and hold down the ctrl, Shift, and i button. it adjusts the layout to the new zoom setting. the only drawback to this is that the text might be too small for some to read. hope this helps.

edit: k so i'm editing from my phone, wanted to post before and after screenshots
before
http://i40.tinypic.com/fu6tj6.png

after (three quick taps on the zoom out button)
http://i41.tinypic.com/2lms1zm.png

as you can see, the rest of the navigation links show up.

Tada! Worked like a charm. And I'm very glad to know about that keyboard shortcut, that will come in handy -- though it takes a lot of coordination to pull off!

yeah the keyboard shortcut can be a hassle, but sometimes the page reformats the layout on it's own. give it a couple of seconds, if it doesn't do it on it's own, then use the keyboard shortcut
