CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

This doesn't bode well for the N800, since Compusa is the primary US retailer for the N800.

Compusa Closing 100 Stores

Are there any plans to get the N800 into other stores like Circuit City or Best Buy? Buying locally is good for devices like this so you can easily return it.

This is not good news since I just bought my n800 week ago with an extended warranty from Compusa. Hopefully they are not going out of business.

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

This is a completely unverified report coming from an "industry insider speaking under conditions of anonymity." Compusa has made no official announcement AFAIK. I daily receive tons of messages trying to influence stock prices. This may be just a more sophisticated version of that sort of stock bumping scheme. Take it with a grain of salt until you hear something more official.

My friend works for the Corporate Satellite offices in Houston.
He told me the same thing... The above statement is Official.

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

That doesn't make it official, it just makes it well verified from internal sources. To my knowledge, no company "official" has stepped forward to make such an announcement. They are still probably crafting a carefully worded announcement on how this is designed to increase shareholder value :)

I live in Bellevue, WA and have a Compusa, Best Buy, Frys, Circuit City and pretty much every office supply store known to man within spitting distance. Simply put, they have a lot of competition who are doing a better job than them. They routinely get beat on price, have poor help who lie as a matter of course (I often play a computer newb just to see what yarns they will tell), a poor return policy and a very strange inventory selection. They waste a lot of precious space by carrying 15 different types of one thing and then almost nothing (or truely nothing) of another type of item. I often find that Computerstop, a mom and pop store a tenth their size is more likely to have what I need. Good riddance, imo.

Funny how the CompUSA store down from my House is getting ready to close....

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

WSJ says 4 stores will be closed.

"All these changes are focused on improving the company's performance, streamlining operations and reducing expenses," said spokeswoman Jessica Nuņez. CompUSA will close stores in California, Texas and Illinois. After the closing, it will have 225 stores, she said.

Rocketman 2007-02-26 03:27

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

4 is quite different than 100. I stopped at Compusa today and there did seem to be a bunch of employee's conferring and looking apprehensive, so who knows. Perhaps upper management is weighing two very different courses of action, closing a few underperforming stores now and trying to reform the rest, or closing down a much larger number of stores to cut back to a smaller group of core stores.

Local CompUSA in San Mateo, CA closing (have we counted beyond 4 yet?)

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

Well at least around me the stores are pathetic and I think I spent more time and countless number of times saying "no thank" to the extended warranty push that I almost walked out of the store without my Nokia. Buying a used car from a shady car dealer is probably less painful then buying anything from CompUSA.

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

I have to say I've never had an experience like bac522's after countless visits to several CompUSAs in our area. The most pushy salespeople in my personal experience are at Best Buy-- where they are beyond annoying.

Has an official closure count (4, 100 or otherwise) been published?

Yea, they can close the shop after my warranty ran out, not before.

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

The word is 128 CompUSA stores are closing now. It probably is true, because the CompUSA location finder now only shows 100 stores (when they used to have 200+ stores listed). My guess is if the store isn't on the list, then the it is being closed.

It sounds like their broad strategy is to pull out of markets where there are other similar (but better) stores and only target markets where there are no other stores. Thats right, they intend to compete by NOT COMPETING.

I realize you're probably being sardonic Rocket, but I like that strategy. I am constantly amazed when competitors move next door to each other with the intent of carving up territory instead of finding niches where they can have it all (or most). Lowe's and Home Depot are a prime example.

I don't know all the details because I'm not a math / business major (I prefer dead things, archaeology), but there is a problem with 2 ice cream vendors on a beach.

Whole beach is 1 mile long. 2 vendors. They set up in the middle, and make more money with their stands next to each other, than if they're stands were on opposite ends of the beach. Has to do with lines, waiting and selection. Vendor 1's line is too long, so people go vendor 2 who has the shorter line. Vendor 1 carries a couple of things vendor 2 doesn't, vice versa. At least that's how it was explained to me, or close enough.

slashdot has an article up on this now, pointing to this page: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2099068,00.asp

saying more than half their stores (126 out of 225 stores).

Why doesn't Nokia sell the N800 in all of the stores that carry Nokia phones? The distribution channels should already be setup, so you would think that it can be easily done.

I get the scenario, but IMO it's too simplistic to be completely relevant for modern retail... especially in cases where the product mix doesn't differ enough to support that scenario and where customers (like myself) don't really care as much about brands as we do value and service. ;)

Which stores? The tablets are in Nokia's own outlets, and carriers will NOT sell these wifi devices. There was some rumoring that T-Mobile might, but that hasn't manifested and they would certainly be the odd duck.

How about Best Buy and Circuit City? Both of those stores carry cellphones, pdas, and computers.

They've been spotted in Fry's Electronics.

Should we expect a N800 sale at the stores that are closing?

Rocketman 2007-02-28 22:14

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

Texrat, the reason why t-mobile would conceivably consider a wifi device like the n800 is that they also make money off their widely deployed WiFi hotspot network, found in Starbucks everywhere.

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

The compusa website has already been updated. When you search for a store, it'll show you which ones are in your area. Out of the 8 in Michigan (physically today), only the one in Lansing shows up.

But of course.

You forget I'm privy to a lot of inside info in this area, too. ;)

Yes I got inside info that they will start next week with a 10% discount on all products than it will increase the discount as time progress IE: 10% 20% 30%

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

I wouldn't get too hopeful about the availability of discounted N800s at CompUSA stores. Odds are many of the closing stores won't have a lot on hand, and I'm betting employees will have the opportunity to snatch up product first.

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

I was lucky enough to pick up an N800 demo machine from a local CompUSA on Saturday for $280 (plus tax). They also had a 770 sitting next to it going for $209. AFAIK this was the last one in any of the CompUSAs in the north-of-Seattle area except for a demo unit in the Lynnwood store that they didn't have in the system, and thus refused to sell. Anyways, I basically ended up with an N800 and a charger, but no box, manual, stylus, pouch or USB cable. All of this is fine since it's still a great deal. Anyways, I figured I'd put in my two cents here. I'm really looking forward to hacking on my shiny new N800. :D

Re: CompUSA Closing 100 Stores

The $280 wasn't just for a demo machine. I bought a brand new unit from the Compusa in Edison, NJ for $280, and they had a few more still there a day ago for the same price. The 770 was also cheaper (I though $249, but it could have been $209 like you saw). So they basically put the Nokia units at 30% off immediately for some reason.

Super deal.

dang i wish i just waited like 2 more weeks before buying my 800 cause then i would of drove the hour drive to save 100 bucks to the compusa thats going out of business near me. It almost angers me if i was a lot closer to one id buy a whole bunch of them and put them on ebay and get like 50-100 profit on everyone. But thats just me.
