Learning Japanese on N900 with Flashcards
Hi everyone,
I have a N900 and absolutely love it. My friend said i should get an iphone because they are simple to use but i prefer something a little more techy. However, i am now a little stuck because i want to learn japanese using flashcards on my phone. Ive downloaded ankmaemi, ankiqt, qteachme, tomotko and word by word. I havnt managed to get any of these to work with the flash cards i want to use (japanese for busy people vol 1). Does anyone know of any other apps? Or can someone provide me with a guide to get these working? Thank you in advance for your assistance. |

Is Anki stable on the N900 yet? I've been waiting for it for other reasons. |
Re: Learning Japanese on N900 with Flashcards
Hi,
Please send me the file and I'll have a look at loading it into QTeachMe. My email address is in the about box of the app. I'm using QTeachMe with Chinese characters, so it should be possible. |
Re: Learning Japanese on N900 with Flashcards
For toMOTko, it's easy because the glossary is already available here:
http://tomotko.sourceforge.net/en/glossaries.shtml To use it, read the Getting started quickly section in the Help. You will find how to import an existing glossary. Be careful, you do not need to unzip the glossary file, import as is. The application wil unzip it for you. The toMOTko application is not finished yet. I hope to complete it within a month. Nonetheless, even in its current state, it works well enough IMHO. You should have no problems to use it to learn Japanese. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. |

Has anyone managed to use any of these programs with Romanji characters? I'm also interested in learning a few japanese words for my next journey this summer.

Re: Learning Japanese on N900 with Flashcards
could the downloadable flashcards on the tomotko website work on qteachme?

Re: Learning Japanese on N900 with Flashcards
I have managed to run ankimaemi. Installed required dependencies (not mentioned in deb file) and fixed one bug to make "Open..." menu work.
There are still some problems, but it works for me. There won't be any detailed instructions, it is quite easy (for an advanced user), just follow the error messages. |

The help text needs to be updated a bit as the application looks a little bit different on N900. That's the last thing I will do before releasing the next version. Here is what you should do. To import an existing glossary: 1) Click the first item (My glossaries) of the list on the left side. 2) In the toMOTko menu (top center), you should have an item Import Data, click it. 3) Select the glossary file (in your case, it should be the file JBP-I.zip) 4) The words should be available in the application after that. Now, to perform a quiz with some the imported words, you need to mark them for study. To do that, you click the checkboxes of the glossaries and also the checkboxes of the words that you want to learn (on the right side list). To start a quiz, in the application menu, you will have an Start Quiz item, click it. The Eye button reveals information gradually (you can click it more than once). Click the Green Circle button to indicate a right answer, or the Red X for a wrong answer. By default, I think that each word is asked at least 3 times (and more if you indicate a wrong answer). If it's too much for you, you can decrease the minimal number of times a word is asked in the Preferences (in the application menu) and set Quiz Length to 1. If you see no Preferences item or no Import Data or no Start Quiz item in the application menu, it's probably because of this bug: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=40875 Tell me if it works or not. |

I had completely forgotten about this thread. I'm just wondering if you have given a try on the latest toMOTko version in testing repository. It should work properly on the N900 now. |
