Overclocking Questions for noobs...

i will make this thread for noobs like me for help to get some questions from the experts or experienced users that got success on overclocking their device. Its so hard to ask questions on the overclocking thread and it so damn long to read so maybe the experts can hear us here...

i got my question first....

- why is Titans kernels are so popular than Lehtos? What is the best suitable kernel to use at the moment? :D

i got mine oc using lethos 900Mhz w/c i think is dong fine, exept that when i run my twitter account on purple-haze i got constant 100% cpu usage on conky... so i disable it. :p

Re: Overclocking Questions for noobs...

if you overclock, you can't be a noob. because before the device overclocks, you have to do power user -stuff.

you should have stayed at the original thread....

Re: Overclocking Questions for noobs...

first of all, shouldn't the title be overclocking questions FROM noobs since noobs are asking the questions?

Second, if you can't figure something basic like this out you should not be overclocking in the first place.

sorry with that....(english not my native language) i did overclocked my device i just want some clarity on simple questions because the overclocking thread is really going longer and longer and its really hard to find a answer. and i did choose the word noob because of the n900 there are more maemo users now than the days of the NIT.

Why do you answer like this there is no need for it. If you do not like to answer the question then do not. It makes people feel bad about asking questions. As a nother user of this site said "The only stupid question is the one you do not ask.":(

Me too i'm hesitating in overclocking the phone! 'cause it seems that the N900 is much reactive. The original thread is very heavy and we can get easily lost reading it!!
We need somebody who can explain us in details the Do's and Don'ts of this manipulation! Thanks!!!

everybody had been a noob here before... so we must help one another here and not bullying one another.

Dear N901:

What is a noob? You have a definitive opinion about what they should or should not do, so you must know a precise definition.

In my observation, I have seen people describe themselves as noobs who have just arrived at this site. For example, I would describe you as a noob. Do you describe yourself as a noob?

If you want to get over noob status then there is going to be only one way out of it. Read and then maybe read and then also read and again read. Search search and again search and search. This place is full of summaries of overclocking in here talk and in wiki and you just have to find them and read them. Simple as that.

Most of people are not so stupid that they do not understand but sadly people are quite often (including me) quite lazy (actually that is imho one aspect of stupidity).

Use search and power search.

stop fighting, noob or not... this is a community for discussion and help(to find answers). Overclocking is at the discretion of the owner regardless if the person is a noob or not. A kind sense of help however is merely a touch of keys on the keyboard.... from a person who has the answers.... if you don't want to share then don't share but don't write selfish and negative remarks like "If you are a noob, Do NOT overclock !!!" as if you are depriving this poor guy from altering his phone to something that could be better than the state that it is in now.

i agree to that... but sometimes things happen that is not on a wiki and barely seen on the threads so u have to ask...

Re: Overclocking Questions for noobs...

"Safe" overclocking has to proven over time. It may work fine over the next few weeks/months, it won't explode or combust, but little things may start happening (e.g. random lock-ups, "unexplained" application crashes) you may not notice it straight away - no matter how many times you re-flash the n900 the problems will persist.

Your device is now royally f***ed!

The CPU may not fail but other components may get damaged. Heat and battery-load will cause problems (especially in a teeny-weeny densely populated device).

Running anything beyond it's specification is risky.

If we are very lucky the n900 is built so well it can handle reasonable increases in clock speed and everything is ok - maybe I am being paranoid.

I will wait a few months and see what happens before I try anything like this.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL PERMANENT DAMAGE IS POSSIBLE.

so I should engourage people to overclock? or discourage? I've made my call already, what's your call?

just put up a wiki page and post the link to overclock thread asking for help creating content.

Now this responce I agee with. An answer to follow. :)
My last comment was do to with you commenting on the new user reply but no comment on N901 which was not called for. I would have given a similar responce to N901. His comment was not called for.

True. Word barely is quite subjective, but what I would first do is to speed read this:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=39753
By speed reading I mean just read really those that look relevant. Might be hard to spot but it's good skill to learn. Bit like doing research for your thesis or something like that.

And more stuff from here:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Overclocking

And just general note:
- If you feel like you are typing commands to xterm like monkey and not really understanding what you are doing then stop. You are not ready do some more research and think.

I haven't overclocked my n900. Maybe after year or so when i have seen enough results in here.

It is NOT being selfish by advising someone not to do something.

It would be selfish if this was said "Yeah, f*** it overclock your device everything will be ok - everyone else is doing it"

The repercussions of overclocking the n900 are not fully understood.

The only that is trying to be deprived is ending up with a bricked device.

Maybe it's just me but that would mean your device is in a worse state.

Maybe you can get away with overclocking the n900 and everything will be fine - Nobody knows the long-term effects of overclocking the n900 yet.

so you think a "noob" is able to do rational choices to overclock or not to overclock with insufficient background data?

Re: Overclocking Questions for noobs...

Reeeeto! i'm a noob and i've overclocked to 900Mhz and i don't think i could go back to stock now? My phone is rapid now, its how it should be as i always thought it was a bit slow at doin stuff. Look at this link....

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=774

Its for noobs like me and i understand it and i understand the risks but i don't do an awfull lot with my phone so i'm confident my phone will be safe for as long as i own it. Just don't be greedy by overclocking as much as its possible? My choice is "lv and limits 500 900" I honestly can't believe the difference its made, its fast and copes with certain websites easily now. Go for it i say because it is reversable if u s**t yourself afterwords and the best bit is no pc required!!

Hi Pros & noobs alike :)
I got an interesting(?) problem that I need help with. I did check the oc info page- thanks alot for posting the links you guys..
It goes like this.. I canīt get through the 1.3 fw update and wonder if itīs cos the fw version disappeared from "About Product"?
Following the instructions from oc page- I get 2 deadends in x-terminal, 1st: "E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - (13 Permission denied)" and 2nd when trying 002 generic code: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpk/), are you root?"

Can someone point me to another helpful link or explain this to me in laymanīs terms please? Thanks and itīs Saturday again cheers!

@bills2north
1. About product dissappears once you reflash ur N900 with custom kernels, lehto's probably
2. Go to appman download and install rootsh
3. If you intend to restore ur about product info u should be root i.e. type root then enter then do the other stuff

Re: Overclocking Questions for noobs...

Just a thought...

I was wondering that I don't think the n900 is very slow or unresponsive since the latest pr1.3 update. Even when I play on DrNokSnes or other emulators, run websites and other apps, it runs smoother and everything is more responsive ever since.

By overclocking the device (i've read a lot on these threads though I'm in no way anywhere near a developers' level of understanding nor ingenious in tweaking the device) your n900 becomes like how? Does it:

1. Never lag
2. No startup time when you open an app
3. Never hangs when opening multiple apps.

Really? So it becomes like a NEVER delay/lag phone? Cause it seems so important to some users that it has to be overclocked. I was thinking about overclocking it too but just holding back for a couple of reasons that to some might seem irrelevant.

So far, I have perpetually turned on everything which included apps manager, multiple websites with microb, and probably every other app that I have including 1 or 2 games (total of nearly 24 apps; just to show off to my girl... hehehe) and it seemed to just lag a little bit between switching apps (especially microb and the app manager) which to me is tolerable because there were like 24 apps ON which on a regular basis I NEVER do. Everyday, I regularly have like 4-6 apps on at one time... the most would be 8 if I feel a bit... indulgent.. :)

Besides, just thinking logically, that even overclocking on computers, which is quite easily done; there are always warnings about overheating. This doesn't seem so disastrous however because if you're a real techie and have like 4 cpu fans blowing at it in an airconditioned room, with all sorts of cooling gels and replace them on the cpu all the time, overheating doesn't really become that much of a big deal EVEN THOUGH it is still an issue and you still have to be careful with it.

Probably if there was a way to cool the hardware down in your device CERTAINLY; I'm sure that it should be OK.. probably.. I don't know cause it's really hard to imagine it on such a small device right? I could probably be wrong but I just don't seem to be able to find out EXACTLY if it is 100% OK..

I might be too careful in this but I really like my current n900... everything from it's hardware to the settings I've put in. I'd really feel bummed if anything (even the SLIGHTEST) would happen to it due to overclocking...

Well, just a laymen's opinion..
