Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
Made a mistake on the n900, I have decided I need a phone, not a mobile Linux box. Am going to buy a HTC desire.
I thought I would enjoy the hacking side of it but to be honest I just don't use any of the cool stuff I would have a couple of years ago. Installed aircrack, nmap and a couple of other apps but never used them. I was very disappointed in the MeeGo announcement 2 or 3 weeks after I bought it too. I am sick of waiting for PR 1.2 and God knows when Vodafone here in UK will release it even if it is published. I stupidly thought that since there is a lot of open source going on the phone would be updated all the time. I will keep on monitoring the progress of MeeGo, let’s hope in a year or so it will be ready for prime time (phone wise). Keep up the good work guys, the world needs the innovation you guys are bringing to the table. It’s just not for me. |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
Im not sure why people need to say they are getting rid of the N900 and switching elsewhere.
It's like supporting a football team and deciding to support another as they may not be doing well. Then going a match of who you first supported and shouting that you no longer support them because of X and Y reason, waiting to get beat up by the hooligans! A little pointless, but enjoy your new phone. At least you say bye in a nice manour, unlike some people! |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
I posted this for a few reasons:
1. To vent 2. Maybe Nokia will see this and add 1 more to the list jflatt: I know Andriod runs on Linux but at least it has a crap load of apps and is designed to be a phone. |
Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
ear0wax: I know android will not be updated as often. new apps will certainly come out more often!

No hw keyboard.
My wife has an HTC Tattoo, which is fine except for the lack of a hw keyboard (which drives both of us mad). This is no doubt exacerbated by the smaller screen on the Tattoo, but I wouldn't touch a phone without a keyboard. |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
Shouldn't this thread be in Competitors?
Anyway, you realised that the N900 is not for you because having a good phone is more important than having a pocketable computer. Which is the right approach. I am happy with Rover because I wanted a pocketable computer first, phone second. Enjoy your new device :) |

I don't see anything wrong with sharing these thoughts - the OP wasn't bashing the N900 or something. |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
Maybe the N900 should come with a warning:
Not designed with noobs in mind?? A bit like the Yorkie advert...... :) (UK advert) Seems this phone is being been mis-sold in the shops...... A mate of mine went into CFW and he is a complete technophobe. This guy has trouble powering his laptop up at work! They tried selling him the N900....... |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
I have purchased the N900 because the iPhone has lost a lot of it's hackability! I used to use it for all kinds of mischief but it's unreliable for that kind of fun.. N900 should fix that problem! (I also have an Pandora on preorder, which I may cancel now that I have bought an N900)

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
I'm glad to see his opinions on why it didn't work out. Hopefully it helps others make educated decisions before purchasing. I like to read a balance of "omg I love my 900 because of X Y Z" and "not for me and here's why".
On the Android note, I switched from Android to the N900. He is right that Android is more "developed" in that there is wider selection of apps/tools. While 90% suck, the 10% that don't are a huge number. In my opinion, where Android fails, the N900 succeeds and vice versa. Too bad we can't smash 'em together and call it Meego :). |
Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
Maybe he doesn't do or know more about 'Researching' of what he buys.
On my experience, N97 is more of a phone but it disappointed me (performance-wise). But N900 is not focused on being a phone, but I easily get used to it! :) |
Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
@samuch
Where does Android Fail? I am probably going to get an Android phone later and want to know what the bad parts are. My friends with Droid's love theirs, and they have a bunch of neat and very useful features! |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
I must admit another reason I posted was to inflame the fanboys :)
I did research before buying the N900, I am reasonably happy with the N900 as a phone but I think the change in direction to MeeGo will slow the development down quite a lot for at least 6 months and therefore slow/put off the developers of apps. I am not a coder (and never will be). The apps are what make a phone and the N900 was going to be a device that would be both, a phone and a computer. I am happy with the computer part, although it turned out I have left my hacking days behind me. By the way, if Nokia aren’t reading these posts, I would be very surprised. |
Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
If you want a phone not a computer, I think you're going to be equally disappointed with an Android phone as well.
I think from what you want, a Blackberry/E72 would be more suitable. Mainly because they're more focused on the Voice side than Maemo or Android. |

Re: Have decided to go Android, I need a phone, not a computer
If we had Java on the N900, someone could port the android API and we would be able to run Android apps on the N900. Nobody would actually use the Android apps, but we could all brag about how cool our phone is where this kind of thing is possible.
