N900 speaker volume booster

Is there an app that can boost the volume of the 3 speakers beyond the maximum defined presets?

Thanks

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

To have full control over sound in the device open the terminal and type "alsamixer -c 0"

Navigate through the switches with left/right, increase/decrease values with Up/Down, toggle mute with m, switch between input and output with Tab and exit with ESC.

You'll have the best chance with sliders named like "PCM", "Master", "Speakers" and mute switches controls containing "Boost" in their names. Haven't experimented with the controls on the N900 myself.

I'm not seeing "Master" nor "PCM"...any chance you can post which value controls the "earpiece" volume?

This would go great with my earpiece mod:

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

So let me get this straight: I could increase the volume of the earpiece to hear the caller's voice better after answering? Which one of the options would this be?

My biggest grief with the N900 is the call speaker earpiece top middle of the phone,s front face being too soft. If it gets the slightest bit noisy I get scared I won't hear the other person on the phone.

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

I used a "version" of the alsamixer before the last update and it didn't make any difference in the ultimate vol level. It did the same thing the vol control did.

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

I think this could help with what's being discussed in this bugreport:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6063

The N900 seems to suffer from a hardware fault, that lessens the volume of the earpiece, if it doesn't cut off sound entirely. Now a hardware problem can't be fixed, but maybe the problem could be lessened by someone finding a way to boost the default volume? :)

P.S. Don't discuss anything in Bugzilla! Do it here.

Yes this is the problem though some have stated it to be a hardware issue and some as software issues but no solution yet mentioned apart from sending it to the service center and getting the speaker replaced which I do not think is the issue actually.

So anyone who has been able to play with the volume control from terminal please share how to do it.

Sorry... I've forgotten this thread for a while... Anyways, after changing your settings you can make them persistent with
Code:

alsactl store 0
Where 0 is the soundcard-ID. Should be the same as the number on alsamixer -c X.

However I'd reccomend you to create a backup of of your /var/lib/alsa/asound.state for the case you messed up with the mixer.

Again, I haven't tried this myself on Maemo yet as I'm fine with the default volume settings. This is just stuff I know from other Linux distros.

Actually you are very likely to screw something while fiddling around with those dozens of sliders. Anyways, after a reboot everything is reset to defaults unless you make changes persistent with the command from my previous post. There shouldn't be any harm to your hardware unless you turn everything up to 100% and play some hardcore techno for some hours :D

Still, if you screwed up, saved those changes to disk AND lost your backup, there is the possibility to request the original .state file from other users or restore it from install image.

You've been a huge help so far, but would you still know which of the sliders is the one for the in-ear speaker?

I'm really feeling a bit shaky about this stuff and I just know that since I understand this so little, reversing the changes will be impossible for me.

Hello,
I'm brand new on the forum, trying to do stuff with maemo.

The sound is fine, most of the time, except the headphones output which I find a little low.

I tried the alsamixer -c 0 , all the settings were 100, except the headphones which was 88, so I put it at 100, and the sound was fine.

I did save the settings, with the alsactl store 0 command, everything was fine.

But everytime I unplug my headphones the settings goes back to 88... weird, if I don't unplugged them, the settings stays at 100

Anyone care to help on this one? I'm not an advanced user, so maybe there is something else to do, it really bugs me as I plan to use my n900 as my primary mp3 player...

Thanks!!!

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

The settings are iffy, sometimes they reset on headphone plug, sometimes not. I remember fiddling with them, but not sure how I did it. I think plug headphones, ramp up the volume with rocker, then reboot while still plugged fixed it. Don't quote me.

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

thank you for your reply,

I did put the settings at 100 again, save it, reboot (while headset plugged all time), but it did go back at 88 on every reboot,

maybe there's something wrong when I save it? I installed the root thing, and before doing stuff, I used the sudo gainroot command...

(I have to say it is really frustrating, because there is a way and you can see the nice result of it ahah)

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

How about rising a proposal at the dude who wrote headphone daemon? It watches headphone stuff, maybe it could up volume when plugged, as it stops stuff when unplugged.

That should do it.

Could do this. But it probably needs to be configurable. Which also means that it probably needs a UI (maybe in the settings) for headphoned. let's see if I find some time this week :)

(The reason for the behaviour described is that the N900 keeps two different volume levels for unplugged and plugged headphones - which is nice; one could have zero volume for the speakers and a normal level for the headphones, and achieve something similar to what headphoned does, without the pausing..)

ndi 2010-07-20 22:26

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

Yes, but it resets it.

At some point it saved it, plugging headphones, upping volume, unplug-then-replug kept the full volume. it no longer does for some reason. Should be a bug.

I think it's the same bug with the phone, it kept a separate volume as well (remember the phone is always low volume bug).

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

Is there a way to boost the volume for the stereo speakers? I want it just a bit louder but couldn't find anything in this mixer that upped it more than max.

I have no file in /var/lib/alsa/ to backup?!

anyone managed to increase earphone speaker volume?

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

I hope everyone in this thread is aware of "volumecontroldaemon".

It boosts the N900 volume by 12% in all cases: calls, music and speakers. It does this by removing the 12% volume nerf by Nokia.

You need to have extras-devel enabled to find it and install. I've had it a couple of months now (with and without CSSU) and it works fine. Gives that extra boost we've been waiting for. :)

After you install it, where is it at and how do you use it?

I experienced that the volume just automatically increased!? No need to set or ajust anything (besides lowering my headphone volume output the normal way! Damn it's loud now :D )

cjp 2011-05-19 15:44

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

It is a daemon, meaning that it is on all the time automatically, monitoring for your N900 to drop the volume by 12% to pump it back up 12% again. :)

Wow guys, you really need to try out the AudioBooster package by SavageD. Thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=70573

Basically, it alters the equalizers for the different output (headphones, earpiece, speakers) and increases the loudness. And it adds higher volume for the earpiece. Haven't had any complains at all since using this patch!

Yup I read that too...quick question: if I already have the volumecontroldaemon installed, won't it conflict with AudioBooster? Follow-up question: do they aim at achieving the same things (headphone, speakers, earpiece)? Thanks. :)

Re: N900 speaker volume booster

User almehdi made a very useful application called n9tweak. In the latest version 0.2-1 he added startup script for the PreDriv so even after the restart the phone volume would be still set to 100%. No need to access the command line and change it manually.
http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=4991

N9tweak 0.2-1 now available at http://goo.gl/4JmjY

Installation 0.2-1:
1)Either install it through the browser. http://goo.gl/4JmjY
You need to have "allow other sources" set in settings.

2)Or do it with wget from terminal.
1. devel-su
(passwd: rootme)
2. wget goo.gl/4JmjY
3. dpkg -i n9tweak_0.2-1_all.deb

Changelog:

* Change GPS provider
* Change PowerKey behaviour
* Added PreDriv at startup
* Added Screenlapse (hidden)

New in v0.2-0:
* Added bounce to lock-screen
* Added volume boost
* Added startup adhoc
* Added german hw-keys
* possibilty to revert hw-keys
* added /usr/bin/n9tweak
