iNes, VGB and VGBA

Lately we have seen great results with Picodrive and DrNokSnes. Even PSX4all is on it's way to be a great emulator for N900.
So with all that development, iNES, VGB and VGBA are some (big) steps behind. Even the NES emulator has it's problems with sound. VGBA is even worse, i can't play Zelda Four Swords/Link To the Past, and all games have problems with sound! :(

I think that if the N900 has the horsepower to run PSX and N64 emulators, why shouldn't it run these emulators perfectly?

Re: iNes, VGB and VGBA

You're basically right. Those emus just need more works that's all.

Re: iNes, VGB and VGBA

That would be a question for the author of all three apps: Marat Fayzullin http://maemo.org/profile/view/fms/

I'm glad that emulators exist and I like that the emulators work well enough that most games are playable, but I do agree that it is a little disappointing that the VGBA emulator still has sound issues which can make playing some games a less than ideal gaming experience.

An update to add a gui front end similar to picodrive and drnoksnes would make for a more uniform gaming experience on the n900 :)

lucbl3 2010-04-16 16:55

Re: iNes, VGB and VGBA

Yeah, an update to fix all the sound and performance bugs would be awesome. And a GUI would be really nice too, since even PSX4all has one!

I'll try to contact the author!
Maybe if more people contact him, there'll be more chances to see an update for these emulators!

Either that or someone else will be willing to make/port a GBA emulator.

I've got this answer:

"It is probably quite obvious that I have no plans of being your hero:
no material gain there. I have made Maemo versions of my emulators
available free of charge. They are as good as I could make them, given
resource constraints, and being gradually improved when I have time to
work on them. So, enjoy what you have got."

Well, i've tried. The best thing we can do now is to hope that someone port/make new versions of these emulators!

I suppose its fair enough. He certainly has no obligation or need to serve us anything. I hold nothing against him, although a nice GUI for these 3 emulators (or new emulators) would be great. As it is now, I'm happy with them simply working.

Wow, excuse my french but what an ***.

Hey smoku, that looks neat. Does it require more than just compiling it for Maemo to see how it runs?

.Yeah! I know he has no purpose to bring us a good emulator, but i think he could have been a little more polite! :p

I don't understand anything of programming, but Smoku, do you think that "gpsp" has more chances than vgba?
If you managed to get psx4all running, than Gameboy, Gameboy advance and NES wouldn't be so difficult, would it?

If you manage to get these emulators 100%, with a nice GUI, i can even make a donation! And i'm sure lots of people here would too! :D

Yeah, you never heard javiq or javispedro complaining and they have their emus working at 99% speed and compatibility. The fact that no ones really paying for them and they get no funding is a given. Man, if I knew how to program I'd start working on emulators right now!

Also smoku, if you're willing to compile gbsp and make the standard issue GUI for it I can make a banner :)

I have no idea how much work gpsp requires.
You have the source available. But please mind that Exophase does not like forks, so if you make a port do not release binaries, but submit the port back to him.

What about Mednafen ?

From website:
Quote:

Mednafen is a portable, utilizing OpenGL and SDL, argument(command-line)-driven multi-system emulator with many advanced features. The Atari Lynx, GameBoy (Color), GameBoy Advance, NES, PC Engine(TurboGrafx 16), SuperGrafx, Neo Geo Pocket (Color), PC-FX, and WonderSwan (Color) are emulated. Mednafen has the ability to remap hotkey functions and virtual system inputs to a keyboard, a joystick, or both simultaneously. Save states are supported, as is real-time game rewinding. Screen snapshots may be taken at the press of a button, and are saved in the popular PNG file format.

Mednafen is distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL.

Due to the threaded model of emulation used in Mednafen, and limitations of SDL, a joystick is preferred over a keyboard to play games, as the joystick will have slightly less latency, although the latency differences may not be perceptible to most people.

Note that unlike me and most of the people here, fms is an actual emulator coder -- he made his emulators from scratch.

It shouldn't be that hard to get the NES emu working 100%......

Almost every platform does have a great NES emu... except for the "best tablet" we got a crappy NES emu (the sound is the only problem why I can't enjoy the games....)

Yes, bad audio ruins gaming for me. Well, we've got a really nice SNES and Genesis emulation and a fully working SCUMMVM. The only thing the N900 is missing that is keeping it from being the best device EVER is good GBA emulation and, of course, good PSX emulation.

Haha, are you kidding? I can make an exhausting long list of awesome games for the GBA. Among them are Final Fantasy VI (the newer, better localized edition) and lots of awesome Mario games. Also the Sonic Advanced series and a lot of stuff I've probably forgotten about. There are a slew of great RPGs that are perfect for the N900. It shouldn't be too hard to emulate, my old 6120C with a 300mhz CPU handled it just fine. Better than VGBA that's for sure.

My point is: are there any good GBA games that does not have (better) versions for other, well emulated console.

ie. SNES.

I think there are. For example, Advanced Wars 1 and 2. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Yes, like I said, Final Fantasy VI and V are way better for the GBA than the SNES version. There are a lot of SNES remakes like that with all kinds of fixes (mostly better localization ie. translation from japanese). I also believe there's a better version of Earthbound? I know there's a fan translated version of Mother 3 too.

Golden Sun 1 & 2 !!!!!
Metroid Fusion !!
MegaMan Battle Network!

Although... I do admit that when I did have a GBA back in the days, it was barely to play those SNES games that I could now carry in my pocket, lol. But still, Golden Sun alone should be worth the work! :D

And PLLZZZZZ, I wanna play Contra on NES two players!! I'm willing to pay!!

smoku 2010-04-22 08:12

Re: iNes, VGB and VGBA

Which Contra?
Contra III is available for SNES and DrNokSnes supports 2 players.

IsaacDFP 2010-04-22 19:43

Re: iNes, VGB and VGBA

no no no, the very first Contra is the best Contra ever made, I have never even bother playing the other ones. it's a classic, which then got franchised.

Re: iNes, VGB and VGBA

Well in Game Boy Advance i really enjoy:
- Golden Sun 1 & 2
- MegaMan Zero 1, 2, 3 & 4
- Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past/Four Swords
- Wario Land 4
- Castlevania Aria Of Sorrow
- Final Fantasy Tactics

And none of these games run well on VGBA....MegaMan Zero doesn't even run

For me a 100% working GBA emulator is a must have :D
GB emulator too, with Pokemon! And iNES just need some tweaks on sound issues, i think!

Also, i don't know if this is possible, but could Bluetooth or Wifi multiplayer be implemented in emulators?

oh.....i thought i was the one mistaking.

im looking for an NDS rom of casstlevania (anything that there is Soma Cruz) and what comes out is "Dawn" but i am expecting "Aria"

and you are correct, even if overclocked, those games are slow, or not running at all, but at least pokemon games do good :D
