[Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
JamMo is a mobile technological tool for music making for children aged 3-12 years. First stable version (0.5) is now in extras-testing.
http://maemo.org/packages/package_in...jammo/0.5.0-1/ It contains singing game (Karaoke style) and composing game for younger age group (3-6 years). NOTE: This version contains Bear talking only Finnish! Read manual and more: http://jammo.garage.maemo.org/user_manual.html Our project group is starting to look forward and version 1.0 (On Autumn 2010). Welcome to test, comment, vote, report, contribute and discuss about this ½-version. |

Hi,
your package is unlocked for promotion. Do you consider promoting it to Extras? Maybe you have some thoughts on this brainstorm: Many tested apps in Extras-testing are not promoted timely |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Thank you for your reminding. We have done so many new version after that 0.5.0-1, so I do not even remember what it contains. And we are soon in version 1.0.
So should this version still be promoted? |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Great to hear this is being worked on! Eagerly awaiting 1.0.
As for promotion to extras (if the opinion of an anonymous bozo off the internet is of any relevance), I think it's a close call between promotion of 0.5 and waiting for 1.0. IMO 0.5 was clearly usable but also clearly not finished. |

Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Is it still only Finnish?
I wanted to test it with my kids in the past but the language barrier was a bit too much :) But looking forward using it with at least English (French would be a plus ;)) |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Version on extras is only finnish (0.5.0).
So you must wait. Version on extras-devel (0.6.8) has finnish+english+german. They are all bundled with same package (automatically installed) called *-fi, do not let it confuse you. It uses (should use) same language which your device uses ($LANG). This language affects only to mentor (bear). Language of songs is user-selectable on song selection menu. Beware of extras-devel version, it uses too much resources and may not work fast enough to be playable at all! Volunteer to test devel-version with overclocked device? ("How much too much we are using/wasting processing power?") |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
I can't find even the Finnish version in the repos this evening, despite it appearing on the downloads list. It may be that I'm shortsighted or it is only visible to 3-6 year-olds... but has it been removed?
Even Finnsh bears are good with me! |

(Maybe the visibility is filtered by emotional maturity... I can not guarantee that I'd pass the 3-6 year old mark if that's the case.) |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Good work on the English talking bear!
I've just finishing downloading Jammo Data and in total it's downloaded musically files of around 13Gb. Is this right? My neice and nephew love it but I'll have to get rid of it soon as I don't have any space left in MyDocs as I partitioned it to 19Gb. |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Yes, 13Gb is right.
But that JamMo is not from extras-testing, but from extras-devel. JamMo for 3-6 years children needs some 350M. JamMo for 7-12 years children downloads 2G OGG-packed files and then uncompress them, using 13Gb disk space. We know it is hazard and thus it is not in extras-testing. Game can play six audio files simultaneously, and if they are compressed -> N900 do not have enough processing power. After uninstalling, check folder: /home/user/MyDocs/jammo_data/ (There are postrm-hook, but maybe never tested) And then there are folder /home/user/MyDocs/jammo/ which behaves like ~/.jammo so there are user savings, singings, 'passwords', log-files... This is not automatically removed! (It can be quite big because singings are stored as wavs) |

If server is down installing will end with failure. (If server is up but very laggy, anything can happens). 'Update' on application manager will try downloading again. Quote:
i.e. Code:
sudo gainroot Code:
dpkg --purge jammo7-12-data jammo7-12-en And finally check /home/user/MyDocs/jammo_data/ is deleted (it is on postrm-script, but not sure will it work on case of not-finalized installation) |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
This looks pretty sweet! My kids don't speak any of the three languages mentioned so would this usable without knowing the language? Don't feel like clearing up 13Gigs to try :)
Also, are there more languages planned? |

a) I knew pretty well how to play, and I helped them to start b) Speak might be annoying if you do not understand it. (This is not issue if you set locale) Quote:
And keep in mind: I started this thread for jammo-0.5.X in extras which is for children aged 3-6. This 13G is about jammo-0.7.X in extras-devel which additionally contains game for 7-12, which do not have speak at all (they are coming ~Feb2011). |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
I've got problem with Jammo. When i'm trying to install it i've received a report: Missing gstreamer0.10-plugins-good-extras. Where i can find it?
I try to install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good but "I got newer version" so it won't upgrade. What should i do to install Jammo on my n900? Please help:confused: |

I don't know how much JamMo interface adds to it - if it's similar (technically) to gCompris, it should be negligible. Maybe something else is hogging CPU, and by finding it, we could get rid of "space dilemma" by reverting to use OGG's again? Also, maybe JamMo default OGG's are compressed using heavier settings? I'm not sure if changing Q affects quality only, maybe processing power too (like with FLAC's compression level)? /Estel |
Re: [Announce] JamMo - Music game for kids - for N900
Currently situation of JamMo is bad. Data-pack is too big to handle with debian-package. We had smart way where deb-packages contains only download-links and files were fetched during installation. But our servers are now expired and there aren't place for data files any more.

e.g. : https://gitorious.org/jammo/jammo-da.../backingtracks Best way to get them: Code:
git clone git://gitorious.org/jammo/jammo-data.git *I don't know how long this will take (long) *how much there are meta-data not needed (git is not best at binary data) Data might not be exactly correct for just dropping to the device. Maybe I can tune data and code for supporting this. |
