[hildon-home] Icons Become Unclickable

Hello,

My N900 has this weird problem that sometimes my desktop icons (widgets, weather, etc) become unclickable. This seems to happen randomly, but also specifically definitely happens after I connect to a VPN using Vpnc using a command line alias.

I can still move desktops, but all of the icons become unclickable.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you!

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

I also have a similar problem - see http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=49386

I've had this problem a few times too. Never been able to put my finger on cause though. Only way i found to get round it is to restart device. Would be nice to know what root cause of problem is though! Just anothor little quirk of the n900!

lol NO that it not the fix. this is an issue which has had a few bug reports logged about it. rebooting the device doesnt fix it

in xterminal type this

sudo gainroot
killall hildon-desktop
killall hildon-home

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

in my case a reboot would fix it, but only until the next incident

I will try the scripts felbutss posted, but is there a better (automatic) fix?

Thanks

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

try to limit your widgets. try not to use widgets made with python. dont use apps from extra-devel. wait untill PR1.2

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

had this happen as well.
only the menu-button was working. a few minutes later the system told me that hildon-home crashed.

it restarted (not the device, but only hildon-home) and then it was working again.

List all your desktop widgets here if this happens. Otherwise we all can just guess.

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

I used to get this problem a month back. I made some MOD's with the desktop icons background files few days before that and i thought that may have triggerred the issue. I reverted few MODs and restarted the phone. Touchwood the destop unresponsive issue did not happen to me after that. Did any of you guys did some MODs with your desktop files/images?

My widgets:
* bluezwitch
* desktop command execution x5
* recaller
* sleeper
* conversation
* simple note
* FM transmitter
* Personal photo
* Personal data plane
* Personal IP
* Touch Search

I'll go to try something... I have disabled the autorotation of the Phone app, I put this to portrait mode and we'll see what happens after a few calls...

I had this issue with DECW. I no longer use it, it would cause sporadic fragmenting with desktop interaction.

I also think about this app, but in first I'll try the disabling of the autorotation, because of I like the DECW and I do not want to uninstall him.

I had similar lock-ups when I had the DECW enabled. once I removed the widget(s) it all went back to normal.

Yep this is what I do. I notice that whenever it happens, it's just after I hung up a phone call.

Yes, well "he" is causing the issue. It is not autorotation. We've provided your answer, it's up to you to act accordingly with the information.

You do also have a lot of applets/widgets that can be janky at times also, simply due to the way they are designed into the platform.

Remove the 5 DECW widgets you're using and report back.

Yes, you are right, it's not autorotation. Now I try to remove DECW one by one from the desktops and I try to call/answer. Maybe only one of this widgets with a not right CMD command... I'll report back after some tests.

What's the issue with python? Does it only apply to widgets or whole programs?

Same here. Happened the other day. Interestingly, I had the Flash game Dicewars running, which I've noticed occasionally screws up responsiveness.

It's not one of the widgets due to the command. It's the widget, itself. Removing them one by one will not fix the issue and you will not notice any changes until you remove them all.

Yep samething here when I answer a call all hell breaks loose. And it mess with my conv widget to a point have to reboot :(

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

It also happened to me a few times. Only short-cuts for contacts entries work. I have recently installed DECW - this could really be the culprit. Any solution apart from uninstalling DECW and rebooting?

Ok, Maybe you are right. But now I removed only two of them and I did a something like 14-15 calls (in/out) and nothing happens, my device is still without freezing of desktops.
In a usually way my desktops is freezing after 3-4 calls :confused:
I'll leave it the way it is, and see what happens tomorrow.

P.S.I removed the "free rootfs" and "boot count". And I have still the "Date", "Uptime" and "Battery".

I used to use "free rootfs" but I stopped using it a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember if I've had the desktop stick since then, I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Right now, my DECW widgets are:

Battery(%)
Battery(mAh)
Free RAM (custom)
Free Swap (custom)
Uptime

One time I made a widget to show the default gateway (was pretty complicated...used grep and awk IIRC and required rootsh) and that quite reliably caused the desktop to stick so I deleted it.

If you will get the freezing of desktop with this app, please report here.

Re: Desktop Icons Become Unclickable

Nothing on desktop worked (I only had preinstalled there), but I also have many emails in Exchange, maybe that was the problem? Tried to remove email folder and run the script in etc, but no luck. Did a normal http://wiki.maemo.org/Reflash , but still same problem. Then I made a backup of MyDocs to my PC and then did a http://wiki.maemo.org/Reflash#Flashi...MC_in_the_N900 , after that copied back cities and some few docs I wanted back. Finally the desktop works again...

For me, I would say MfE (Mail for Exchange, I use Exchange 2003 server) is the problem. All worked well after the reflash, untill I in MfE choose to change "syncronize 3 days" to "1 month back" (or something like 1 month, cant check as the N900 dont respond when Im trying to check the settings). After that the problems are back... Maybe I will try http://mfefolders.garage.maemo.org/

EDIT: And also the calendar in MfE can give similar problems: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...&page=122#1213 I got that problem right now and desktop froze again, fixed it with disabling calendar sync and doing a
rm /home/user/.calendar/calendard

Ok, I removed the all of DECW widgets and now it's looks better. I tried to use the Queen BeeCon Widget, it's like DECW, and my problem returned... I get freeze of desktops after 3-4 calls... I also removed the Queen BeeCon Widget and now again looks ok.
I think, maybe the problem not only in the DECW or Queen BeeCon Widget, maybe we have a little conflict with one or more another widgets... :confused: Something like DECW + FMXT or other...
I like the DECW, but I cant using this... :mad:

Hi, could you please post a backup of all your Queen Beecon Widget Instances as per this procedure: Export/Save/Backup Procedure for Beecon Instance Data

Maybe it's just a matter of run scripts, commands or update policies.

It would seem that this a common unwelcoming effect! I've found a temp fix (as mention in this thread) which can by done powering on and then off (or rebooting some how).
