Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Let me just elaborate what mavik60 is saying..
Install x11vnc from the repositories (not sure which one, take caution if its devel). Install tightvnc to you're computer. Launch x11vnc via your tablet, followed by tightvnc viewer from your computer. Ender your tablets wlan IP into tightvnc viewer and you are now viewing your N900's screen. |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
If you want to view your N900 desktop on your Windows PC you DO NOT use the vnc viewer package.
You have to install and run x11vnc on your N900 and then install a VNC Viewer on your Windows PC (like RealVNC). After installing the X11VNC package to your N900, you should really start it from the Terminal's command line. The GUI launcher is just awful. Try this command as a normal user in the terminal: nohup x11vnc -forever& Leave the Terminal open, but minimize it to the background. The VNC server will stay open for as long as your keep the terminal open or until you change network connections on the N900, whatever happens first. Then open the Windows PC's VNC viewer and type in the local LAN IP address of your N900. Bang! Your in business with remote access to the N900's screen, keyboard, and touch screen via your Windows PC's monitor, keyboard and mouse. If you like this and would like a persistent VNC server running on your N900 automatically every time you turn on the device, you can follow the instruction here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...322#post590322 |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
just make sure you have a video input in your pc or monitor. TV sets almost always have one. With the cable from the original pack you will got what you want.
VNC is an option, but you have to setup first. |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Ok - works perfectly (missing some colors - but anyway!).
Thanks a lot guys!! |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Is there any way to switch the backlight on via the VNC client?
|
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
In the settings manager go to (sorry, if incorrect translation on-the-fly) Screen, disable lock screen automatically .
|
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
I've tried that, but the screen still blanks out (using UltraVNC viewer)..
The only workaround I've found so far is to set the blank timeout to an hour or so using gconftool-2 --type "int" --set "/system/osso/dsm/display/display_blank_timeout" 3600 .. but I'd prefer a neater solution :) |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Install "simple brightness applet" and use the option to keep the display on.
|
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Aha! I have that installed but never noticed that option.. is there a way to make the display "dim" though, yet not blank completely (as happens with the gconftool trick)? I just think that must be better for battery consumption.

Even at the lowest brightness of 1, it's still got to be using more battery than when it's dimmed though, surely..? Not a bad workaround though, thanks!

Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
This kind of goes along the lines of what tigerite was saying, is there any way to wake the n900's screen with the pc mouse while viewing the n900 screen from the pc? This could be useful in cases when I have my computer and not my phone (don't tell me this isn't likely). I wouldn't want to always keep the backlight on in order to use vnc.

Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
PLEASE, Please, please help..!
My x11vnc used to work (~2011) - way before i had CSSU and stuff; now it just refuses to take up connection from the computer. I have tried passwd - doesn't work, purged package, removed passwd file, and reinstalled, tried the 'nohup' command and stuff - still not working. I have static internal IP from my router (as displayed on my home IP widget) and i use no port offset, i.e. i only type in 192.168.x.xx on the VNC viewer. I also have SSH installed for SCP. The error is: Quote:
|
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
That's a fairly generic-sounding error message; it doesn't seem to indicate any specific error, other than communication between the two parties simply ceased at some point.
Is it possible that something is blocking or interrupting the connection between the two machines? I guess you could test this by trying to connect using something other than VNC, such as the SSH, and seeing if something interferes while you're using that... |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Thank you for your assistance..!
Yes, i am able to use SCP (which, i am assuming uses SSH) - it works perfect. Plus, i am able to use Presence VNC to control my PC from the N900 perfect. IT's only this direction - seeing the screen of my N900 on my PC, which i was able to do, a few months ago (before my NITCroid experiments). This is a proper fresh install (no KP, only CSSU). :( |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Hmm, I'm probably not going to be able to help too much; I don't really use VNC (and I haven't jumped on the CSSU bandwagon yet either). But if it really isn't even starting the connection (and, it doesn't have enough information to really provide a good error message), then I would guess that something is interfering right at the start. Maybe the port VNC is trying to use is being firewalled? Or, perhaps, the two sides simply don't agree on their communications protocols? (I can't remember, are you using Presence VNC for both the server and client roles, or do you need a different VNC when sending your 900 screen to the PC?)
|
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Well, Presence VNC can't be used in server mode. So, i am only left with x11vnc. :( ..and you may just be spot on about firewalls, i'll check and revert.
I am not sufficiently educated on ports, and protocols, so that's where i'll be needing help - if any. Thank you, again. :) |

I was, umm.. massively stupid and left the IP as 192.169 instead of 168 - :epicfail: :p ..password and 'Enter' key works a-okay. Thank you..! :D |
Re: Show N900 screen on PC?
Cool. :) Yeah, I actually mess up IP addresses all the time too. Usually, the error message that comes back is a little better at telling you that the IP address is bad; half the problem here is that VNC's error reporting is just a bit too vague. :)
