Otterbox for N900!
I wrote not a week ago to ask if the N900 was going to be supported, and the response was "No plans to support it, but keep checking the site".
And I checked today, on a whim: http://www.otterbox.com/nokia-cases/...r-series-case/ Going to be picking one of these up for sure. I haven't really liked the shell options for the N900 to date, so here's hoping this one is a slam dunk. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
I ordered the otterbox a couple days ago, along with the pdair book style case. I'll post pics and a review as soon as they arrive.

Re: Otterbox for N900!
Very interested in a review if you have the time!

Re: Otterbox for N900!
I just got it yesterday, so these are only my initial impressions. It has a good fit, openings everywhere there needs to be openings and rubber doors covering the usb port and earphone port, the case does not interfere with the slide or kickstand. The only downside is the case makes it somewhat hard to dig out the stylus if you have thick fingers. Also looking at the screen protector it seems to not cover the very edges of the screen.

I feel a lot more comfortable using the phone without babying it now that it has a suit of armour on. There's no silicone padding for the screen section so it creaks ever so slightly but other than that it feels completely solid. I'll post pics once i get my DuraSec HiTec screen protector, because right now the screen looks pretty embarassing. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Mine arrived today.
Overall impression - very well made. The casing has a harder, less tactile surface than the rubberised qubits case. The tiny flanges clipping it onto the device look sturdy. All cutouts and ports are perfectly placed - except, for those who use it, they forgot to include a small hole for the lanyard...easily remedied with a heated darning needle or wire. The faceplate clips don't seem to interfere with the sliding mechanism at all. The silicon flap which covers the usb port has me wondering what stresses it will place on the charging plug - it will tend to flip up and exert I imagine some pressure on the micro-usb connector from below. Given that I've babied my usb connectors from day 1 (filed prongs down, always connected charger with microsurgical precision :p) I'm considering cutting the flap free with an exacto knife so it can be pulled off when charging. Comments from other otterbox owners welcome. I have small fingers, but even so the stylus and screen unlock ports are recessed enough to require careful finger(nail) access. Sorry, no pics - digital camera not working ATM ! Overall, a sturdy, well-made case. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
yea just got my otterbox and I LOVEEEEEEE It very well made case and i wnet through both of the nokia cases for the n900 and wasnt really happy but now with the otterbox i can have full time the protection. Even the screen protector is pretty nice i got it on bubble free and its hard to tell its even there
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Does the screen protector affect the responsiveness of the screen?
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
mine arrive yesterday, it is really well built, no obstruction on the sliding mechanism
though it is a really good case, i wish the front plate wasnt raised as much, sometimes it hurts my ear while talking on the phone... and need a new screen protector, the one came with isnt all the good; lastly i wish the back got some sort of grip, still kinda slippery, but overall no complaints |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
I got mine a couple weeks or so ago and have put it through its paces. I also have a couple other (cheaper) protectors for comparison -- although there isn't much.
First, I like the fact that the back cover is in two parts; the interior is a sort of silicone rubber (e.g. shock cushioning + buttons) with a hard plastic shell exterior over that. The "kickstand" is still very easily accessible thanks to the design, although admittedly mine doesn't come out often. The buttons are easy to press, no issue there. The caps on the data/audio port are nice and thick; they bend a little more than I'd like to plug the USB in, but it'll probably last for a while before busting off. I agree with other reviewers that say the stylus is harder to eject with the case on, but it's not terrible. The other thing about the case is one might lose their stylus if they don't push it in all the way; the "stop" before it clicks home is almost perfectly flush with the exterior case, which might lead someone unfamiliar with the device to think the stylus is secure when it isn't. I doubt I'll lose it, but I'll be careful if lending the device to anyone. I liked that the front cover only surrounds the screen edging, but like others have already said, the raised edge is a bit uncomfortable while talking on the phone -- fortunately I don't talk for long so it's not as big a deal for me as it might be for some. I imagine this may be required to provide any protective value should it take a fall, and to raise it sufficiently high to prevent screen scuffs while setting it screen-down on a table or whatever. I liked the fact that no "straps" are required behind the screen to keep the screen border attached. The left edge seems a bit loose sometimes but it has yet to fall off on me or anything. I had bad luck with the screen protector; it took 5 tries to get it on without any bubbles after which an errant piece of grit or something had effectively stretched/damaged part of the protector and made it look crappy and formed a new bubble after being left for a while. I tossed it. I also concur with the annoyance that it doesn't quite fit the screen of the device, which would have made it easier to install right the first time -- as would better instructions (the instructions are completely worthless). If you are experienced at installing screen protectors maybe you are already familiar with the drill, but I wasn't, and I would have been better off figuring it out on my own than trying to decipher their cryptograms. All in all, I am: * Very happy with the 2-part back piece * Mostly happy with the front piece except for the height and cross-section of the raised area; * Unhappy with the screen protector, mainly due to avoidable difficulties during installation (awful instructions and poor fit) |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
i have no complaint about the screen protector it actually went on perfectly noo bubbles at all maybe u just had bad luck screen protecvtors are a 1 shot deal most times
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
thank you all, now ordered.
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
My experience was almost exactly the same as isolationism's. It's a great case, the screen protector however is rubbish. Can't have it all though - and they delivered via FedEx from the US to the UK in about 4 days flat, two of which were weekend days! I actually received the case before the phone, thanks to Vodafone's "store policy" of not getting phones from ParcelForce on a Saturday - despite the fact I'd ordered the phone the day before the case! Laughable..

Re: Otterbox for N900!
I have one as well.
The screen protector is so good you don't even realize it's there. Still responds exactly as before. Solid, sturdy and worth the $$ no doubt. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Well, okay, by "rubbish" I mean that I mucked it up trying to apply it and after about the 4th or 5th attempt, it got grit under it and was then useless so had to be binned.

Could one of you guys post pics of the n900 with the otterbox?

Also my other complaint is that the lower left side of the upper cover is a bit loose, and i have to tighten it everytime it gets loose http://i44.tinypic.com/1z2qgxs.jpg Anyone else got this problem? Or did it get expanded because i pulled it? I removed it and put it back couple of times before... |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Both of the covers on my Otterbox fit nice and snug. Only complaints that I have is that it it defintely increases the thickness quite a bit. And the top row of keys are a little tight in space now with the top shield.
I feel a lot better just throwing the phone in and out of my bag or in my pockets now but it will take a little getting used to the thickness. I like being able to just set the phone down anywhere without having to baby it. I ordered mine online from amazon.com for 19.95 plus 6 for shipping. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Yes, the lower left corner on mine is loose too. It's not you, pretty sure it's just a minor design flaw or limitation. I've never actually had it pop off, so not a huge deal.
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Hmm I don't think I have a problem with the lower left corner on mine. If you're thinking about purchasing the Otterbox for your N900 - do it! It feels so much sturdier! I love how much protection it adds to the phone. The buttons are all accessible, the stand is still usable, and it doesn't get in the way at all IMO. No complaints here! I've only used one other case...well, it wasn't really a case - more like a leather holder. It sucked! Anyway, here are my pics of the phone + otterbox...

I finally found a way to attach keychain to the hardcase, You can actually slipped the keychain rope between the hole for speaker and hole for unlock button, just like in the pic below http://i48.tinypic.com/29egf0j.jpg Heh, neat little trick, it's easier to carry it around now with keychain :) |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
yea, this is the best case around imo.

Re: Otterbox for N900!
Got mine yesterday and love it so far.
Only complaint about the case itself - poor access to lock slider, stylus and rear stand. But then, that's also due to my nail-biting habit. The screen protector that came with the case is another story altogether. It came with 4-step instructions for applying the film to the screen, but those instructions are useless pictograms. I tried briefly to apply the film, but soon realized that I had incorrectly assumed that the thinner film was the actual protector. In fact, the more rigid, thick plastic that I had thought was the backing for the film was the actual film, and by the time I realized this, it was covered in dust and rendered utterly useless (ONE SIDE IS STICKY). I scoured the Otterbox website for info on having a replacement protector sent, but found nothing. Looks like I'll be seeking a different screen protector elsewhere. It certainly will not be a Zagg shield. I put one of those on my girlfriend's HTC and it was a nightmare. After more than an hour and at least 20 unsuccessful attempts to install it without dust or hair particles under the film, I surrendered, leaving several specks of dust and a couple of tiny bits of fuzz under the protector. A month later, the shield now has bubbles throughout, is too sticky to effectively use the touchscreen, has an awful glare and distorts the screen terribly. |

My film was covered in dust as well, you can clean it using duct tape, try it. Don't worry It won't remove the glue so you'll still be able to stick it. The reason why the film won't stick it's because there's a dust or dirt on it, no matter how small it is, so you have to make sure it's really clean before you apply it. good luck |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Anybody by it in the States? On Amazon it says it ships in 1-2 months
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
had mine for a week, great case, n900 now feels pretty bomb-proof.
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
I ordered it directly from them and I'm in the UK, it arrived within 3 days via FedEx, and that was during the major disruption caused by Iceland's volcano!
I do have one problem with the box though; how on Earth do you remove the back cover to access the SIM and battery? |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Just received mine (about a week from NYC to France), and it's every bit as excellent as everyone says.
Twice the price but many times better than the cheap erzatz I got last Xmas. The internal rubber lining makes it a tight fit, no wobbling anywhere, smooth sliding. The rubber pads over the buttons actually make them easier to use, and I can now use my stand again :-) Didn't try the screen protector though, I already had one installed and despite a few bubbles was loath to take another chance at it... I only knew Otterbox by name before, but this is a brand-quality product, worthy of of my N900... thanks to the original tipster ! |
Re: Otterbox for N900!

Who has a recommendation for a better screen protector? I have already scuffed the black area on the right side of the screen (note: soft, rubberized plastic is sufficiently capable of scratching the N900 screen). I refuse to attempt another ZAGG product after the losing battle with my girlfriend's HTC. After more than a week with the Otterbox, my only real complaint is that I really wish the stylus were more accessible. I hate fingerprints and smudges, so I often prefer the stylus, but it's a real hassle to get to it now. My thumb will not fit into the slot and I have no fingernails with which to pry the stylus out of its hole. I've had to train myself to use smaller fingers to access the stylus, and it just feels awkward. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Boxwave's screen protector is excellent - but be prepared to wait a good 7 days for it to arrive. Coupled with Otterbox's case I reckon it's the best combination your N900 could hope for ;-) still wish I knew how to take the back off though!

Re: Otterbox for N900!
Just got my case and must say, from view of protection probably good investment. But with that case -- it's huge! have to agree --
Quote:
Screen protector is another issue. Original screen is easy to clean, just wipe and is crystal clear again. With mounted shield it's insta-greasy and hard to clean. I even spit on screen today to clean fingerprints as only wiping was not enough!!! It's my first shield anyway and I screw at mounting ... have few dust remains ... Mixed feelings -- case OK, screen protector -- probably good, but I'm not happy. b. |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
I live in Texas - received it in just under a week. I bought it directly from otterbox since they had a coupon code
|
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Just bought mine from an Ebay seller, good deal. The Otterbox itself is great. I had a cheap-o enclosure for my n97 mini, but broke it after about 30 seconds ;)
I already dropped N900 a couple time and Otterbox still in place. About the screen protector, I'm more than happy with DuraSec's HighTech (http://www.falcixx.de). |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
Speaking of the screenguard,
i noticed there's no opening for the front camera.. and when i use 'mirror' app, I get a terrible result and it doesn't look like mirror reflection at all :( Is it because of its screenguard? is it any different if you take it off? |
Re: Otterbox for N900!
got mine 2 days ago.....simply awesome! comes with a screen film that is easy to install, silicon port covers are useful, and not so much bulk is added.
