Allow me to read a new email inside 2 seconds

Currently, it takes a lot longer than that!

As outlined on this brainstorm, it's important for people to be able to read their email quickly.

If you agree with the brainstorm, can you please vote for it, add a comment to this thread, edit the brainstorm, pass it around the forum, whatever it takes to get more people working on the problem!

I wish I had the tech skills, but I just don't and this is the only way I can think of to do something.

Please vote for it! (up or down!)

Interesting as i just timed mine -it took about 2 seconds.....
Is it a specific kind of email?

My IMAP email takes about 2 seconds - but my nokia messaging (Yahoo) about 4/5

Yip, I'm using Google Apps. I wasn't aware that might be a significant factor, when I was using a different device I didn't have this long delay.

So, if I'm the only one out of us having this problem, maybe it's a setting I can alter. Any suggestions would be welcome!

afaik I'm using the right settings.

Odd, my phone waits for me more than I wait for it, as in, it takes me more to locate and click the button than it takes it to open.

Tap E-mail, Gmail, tap Inbox, tap message.

Sometimes I find it in the middle of synchronizing, and then it takes an additional 10 or so. But before and after, under 3 if I'm fast.

I think it's too many clicks. Especially if it's from the notifier. If I click on the notification, I would expect it to bring me right to the message, if not at least the inbox. Right now, it just opens up email, then I click on nokia messaging, then gmail, then inbox.

It does. What phone do you have?

It depends on how many messages there are. If there's one new message then you go straight to it, but if there's more than one then it just opens the mail client.

I think N900 mail and message handling works fine. I do not get many phone calls (mercifully), but I get a lot of emails and Skype/FB messages. The way that N900 handles it now is perfect for my needs.

There is minimal delay between me touching the notification and the action.

...personally the described Android functionality would drive me insane unless there is more to it.

I dont like the way Nokia Messaging works on the n900 really.

1. Open Email
2. Click on 'Nokia Messaging'
3. Click on Email Account
4. Click on Inbox
5. Click on message

Surely at least step 2 could be removed???

Kev

there is no step 2 in my n900

so its just
- tap email (on desktop shortcut)
- tap email account (in this case Gmail)
- tap inbox, will wait about 2 seconds if it recently updated, took longer (up to 5 seconds) if it hadn't been updated recently (also related to the connection speed)
- tap message (waiting time depends on email size and the connection speed if its a new email)

thats what i've been experiencing with my n900

Have you used nokia messaging thou? I find it very important otherwise I get a TON of junk mail through, nokia messaging does seem to filter them well, I just dont see the point of having the 'Nokia Messaging' step.

If I set up gmail individually then i dont get the Nokia Messaging step but it doesn't have junk filters on.

and it doesn't "push" the emails.

Re: Allow me to read a new email inside 2 seconds

I use IMAP and MfE. Mail pops up in my N900 before it pops up in Outlook or Gmail most of the time. If that's not "push" then I guess I don't need it :)

Re: Allow me to read a new email inside 2 seconds

as far as i know, nokia messaging email WILL push your email.

for MFE (google, outlook, etc) you need to set a 'check' interval (15min, 30min, etc) in order to be constantly updated.

the push email function is the only reason i use nokia messaging for my gmail accounts.

Correct, however, he said "If I click on the notification, I would expect it to bring me right to the message", implying one. Additionally, if there are two there's no more than the Inbox is the best anyone can take you lest you miss other emails.

Also, if you have multiple accounts, all it can do is open up messaging.

IMO it does the best it can already. Polling is good too, better than the GMail web client.

I only have one account and it's pretty sweet. If it weren't for the lack of search and advanced features (like archiving) I'd be happy. I'm still 90% covered though.

I think your logic is faulty. It's certainly not "all it CAN do". The N900 could be programmed to do anything the developers want to - within what's logically possible of course.

It's just that they chose to "zoom in" on the shallowest level of where there's something unread when you click the card.

Half the time I find myself irritated by this and that's because I'm much more likely to want to read at least one mail than none at all, when I click the card.

I have eyes. If the card says "7 new mails", it would be perfectly OK to open the newest when I click the card, because I will have to read it anyway. I will certainly remember that I had 6 more unread mails 10 seconds later, when I'm done reading the newest one and since I usually read all my mail, it's just a waste of time not to take me to the actual newest message.

I guess it's a matter of opinion, but the way it works now is far from the only way it could. I would prefer it worked in a different manner.

Edit: Furthermore, the inconsistency in how clicking the yellow card works seems like a blatant disregard for "normal" user interface guidelines. A certain function should not "arbitrarily" work in different ways at different times. You wouldn't like it if somebody came into your house at night and moved your fridge to a different room each day. Not even if the mover was pretty closely aware of in what room the fridge would be needed the most on a specific day.

MfE lets you set the interval to "Always On" which is what I use, and which causes email to arrive instantly as it happens.

Re: Allow me to read a new email inside 2 seconds

If I were designing it, I would have separate new mail pop-ups for each account. If you click the alert and have 1 new message, it should open that message. If you have more than 1 new message, it should take you to the message list of your inbox, scrolled to where the oldest new message is visible, at the bottom of the screen if there are more than 1 screen's worth of new messages.

Re: Allow me to read a new email inside 2 seconds

It is a matter of opinion. It rings once, I click the banner, it takes me to read the email. Then read another, assume I'm done, move on. Little do I know there's another in some other account, for example.

In other phones, the little status area @ keeps you posted. On N900, if you missed it, you missed it. And frankly I don't want to hunt the last unread e-mail, especially with GMail that throws it in some archived folder somewhere. Sometimes it's not even on top of the pile.

Also, I see it takes you to the deepest level it can where you can overview the changes. Don't know how often you get email, but I couldn't possibly always know via > and < whether this is the first time I see the email. I'd probably read newest and previous to newest in inbox 1 then exit and miss the second email in inbox 2.

However, as I've agreed, it is a matter of opinion. Me, personally, if I have 10 new emails I have to hunt through 15 folders in whatever order they are I'd lose my count. But that's just me.
