OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

ScreenShot showing menus and xkbd

ScreenShot showing extra icons available for menu

I have completed the latest tarball for an Alternate Window Manager. This one is running Openbox + ROX, and lots of custom configuration.

I have a TARBALL and no place to host it, its roughly 26MB, anybody with some bandwidth that can host the file?

Thanks to lechuck
Removed - Thanks for the link

NOTICE - I still need a better place to put this, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I will be removing these links in a couple of days, whether I have a new home or not, so grab it now.
I have to wait to find out if I can get approval from the garage.

__________________________________________________ ______

Listed below is a list of changes and information.

MENU ENTRY's
"Menu Refresh" will delete menu cache and restart ROX

"Not Installed" This is where Icons/menu items are stored that are not installed by default. I made a bunch of Icons for additional software, if you install it.

Customize Menu, move the menu items from "Not Installed" to the appropiate locations /usr/local/apps/XXXXXXX

CAUTION, do not move current menu items (its ok to move "Not Installed" folders) or it may cause you serious issues. (Some menu entries have code that will break if you move them, like the deb installs, the wallpaper drag and drop icons, the "Saver". For a general rule of thumb, do not move any of the folders under /user/local/apps (except the "Not Installed" items can be moved anywhere)

If you want to completely make your own Menu layout. Do the following.

Remove /home/user/Apps (This is a link to /usr/local/apps)

Create a new Directory, /home/user/Apps (This is the default location for the menu to look for apps)

Now you can create directories in /usr/local/Apps, like Games, Accessories, Network, Tools, etc.

Now using ROX relative link each app into the directory you want.

Then use the "Menu Refresh" in Tools

Additional Changes

Button Mapping
(zoom -)(fullscreen)(zoom +) = (minimize/iconify)(fullscreen/normal)(close window)

Note that these buttons do not effect the xkbd or matchbox-keyboard. The keyboard Icon on the panel, will start the xkbd, and when you click it again it will kill xkbd.

Menu button works with Hildon Apps

Home button switches desktops

Hildon Keyboard (pop up keyboard) is disabled by default in openbox (my added default) it can be re-enabled from Accessories/Hildon KEyboard/ Stop/Start

If you want to use the WMAPPS, I created a quick little bar with usefull options (Accessories)(WmBar)(start)
It will not start at boot, I did not figure it should?

Menu is new

Pager is new

Archive, just drag files to it. gz/tar/bz2 or drag files to create archive. Kinda neat

Debs should install by clicking on them, there is also a place to drag deb files to, or deb links to install from minimo. If you drag a .install file to the "Drag URL Here" it will error and fail, but place the .install in the "Install" folder. Then just start Application Manager and "install from file" and select the .install file. There is a link in MyDocs, you can just select the Install directory from the main window that opens.

"Saver" This is just a directory with 5 queues in it, they are for downloading files. You can open it and drag links from Minimo to be downloaded to the Queue, the ICON will change if it is still downloading files, you may have to refresh, you can only download 1 file per queue at a time.

If you use xkill and kill ROX, you need to ssh to restart or press shutdown key and reboot.

KBDD is installed by default, it is a hacked version to support BGP100 bluetooth gamepads, I did not feel like keep installing it. Its installed in /usr/local/bin/kbdd edit the btconf file there and add your keyboard, it contains my bt gamepad by default. (Dont forget to pair first)

ISSUES
The only issue I have run across, is that Gaim will create a long window nad you can not grab the bottom window edge to resize it. If you maximize it, you still can not grab the bottom to resize it. The only way I could find to get the window to be able to be resized, From openbox start Gaim and login, now run "Hildon Desktop". Now that you are in Hildon, click on the Gaim application that is running, now open the Hildon menu and start openbox again. You should then be able to resize the window when back in openbox, and it will save the settings.

Installation!!
flash new image and create backup. Refer to here for proper documentation on how to do this.
http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ead.php?t=4053

http://maemo.org/maemowiki/HowTo_EAS..._From_MMC_card

You will need GNU tar and bunzip2 to undo this
http://penguinbait.com/tar
or
http://penguinbait.com/tar.gz
and
http://penguinbait.com/bzip2
or
http://penguinbait.com/bzip2.gz

Again the only thing you need to install after untar is PYTHON.

sudo su -
cd /
tar jxvf /path/to/file/OPEN-ROX6.tar.bz2

boot new partition

install python2.5

start openbox from extras menu.

Your Done!!

Updates, I would like anyone who wants to contribute any changes or additions to please contact me. There is a lot of stuff that works that could be coded better, there is only so much I can get done, so if you can help out its more than welcome (its expected), and you can help set the direction for changes you would like to see made.

Let me know what you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One last thing, ICONS/Menu Items
There are several applications that run on the n800 and I have not made application/menu entry for every available app. No Problem. These are very easy to create. Just make a Directory somewhere in /usr/local/apps and it will apear in the menu (after a refresh Tools/"Menu Refresh") Want to make it have an Icon just save a image file called .DirIcon in the directory. Now you have a submenu with an Icon. Want to make an app link instead, just add a file in the directory called AppRun. Inside Apprun just call the executable file (with options if needed)
/usr/local/bin/aterm -tr -sh 50 -e /bin/sh

Want to make something that you can drag to, look at mplayer.

/usr/bin/mplayer $1

Thats it, just pass the $1 and it will pass the filename or http when you drop it on the file.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
If you create new stuff send it to me. Even "Not Installed" icons, so they can be included in the next release. change a script, write a new one? send it along.

Mime entries you can add entries using vnc server, "Right Click" on a file, say mpg, or avi. It will open a menu (select Set Run Action) and you can drag an app to it or type in an app like /usr/bin/app "$@" Send these to me also, when you create new ones it creates a link in /home/user/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/

ls
/home/user/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/MIME-types/

lrwxrwxrwx 1 user users 44 Mar 7 18:45 application_x-debian-package -> /home/user/Apps/Tools/Install/Drag File Here

Anyway HAVE FUN!!! and Contribute, send contributions to contrib@penguinbait.com

Something I forgot to mention. If you use xkbd and you type in a URL in minimo, you have to click the right hand menu, and select go, after typing URL, enter does not work.

I really like it! I started up my bluetooth keyboard, brought up Links and google/slashdot and started browsing. Very slick, and completely usable by just a keyboard. It's very quick and responsive compared to Opera, although obviously not as polished. The transparent xterm is pretty enough to eat :-) I was surprised at how fast things started up compared to maemo utilities.

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

I've installed it and it looks great. My N800 now really feels like a true Linux box.

I haven't used Openbox-ROX for long, but at one point the device stopped accepting any input. No buttons worked, nor did the touch screen - although I still heard the clicks when tapping and pressing the buttons. I've no idea if it is related to Openbox-ROX or something else. When the screen blanked, it almost immediately switched back on again. The only way I could get out of it was by rebooting the device.

One other thing that I noticed is during boot-up to via the internal card slot, a strange electronic noise is emitted from the speakers (prior to the 'Nokia tune' while the progress bar is still displayed). Since this is the first time I've tried booting from an SD card, I've no idea whether it is related to stuff installed as part of Openbox-ROX or the boot-up from an card. Any ideas?

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

that strange horrible electronic noise is some older bootup sound.... Where is that by the way Penguin so I can rip it out and hold it underwater? Also if you having trouble with your internal boot, boot up into flash and fsck it, even if it is ext3

I don't know where the sound is exactly located, I compiled and installed esd so gaim would have sound, and poof its there on bootup now. I posted that this happens, in prior threads, its not new, its never really sounded that bad to me, but the other day I tried to boot while plugged in and it will make horrible sounds, like its half initialized or something.

I also have crashed a few times, but everytime its related to metalayer-crawl

Run

/etc/init.d/metalayer-crawler0 stop

I then added "exit 0" on the second line, you could also just remove

/etc/rc2.d/S99metalayer-crawler0

rm /etc/rc2.d/S99metalayer-crawler0

That fixed my crashing problem, it will consume 100% of CPU and chew through memory like mad.

I also think that the occaisonal fsck done from flash is necessary, especially after a few crashes.

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

I just installed openbox and I find it very very good... real linux desktop...wow...amazing...puhh... But I have some questions :)
- How can it be deinstalled, without copying restoring my backup? Not that I don't like it, but just in case... ;)
- There are some applications that don't start. When I click on the minimo icon, it just won't start. The same with mplayer. I have to admit, that I missed to reboot my machine after unpacking and got many error messages when i started openbox. But now I don't have any errors. Everything works, except for those applications and a few more...

EDIT:
Something strange is going on... I rebooted my N800 and it went to hildon. The cpu load is at 100% and it's rebooting after a while :(
dmesg says something about "softMAC not initialized, chip not booted..." Wifi is not working. Both from hildon and openbox...argh...something is not right ...

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

Penguinbait: OPENBOX-ROX sounds great, but I need some clarification: I have retained my 770, and have no intention of switching to the N800. On my 770, I have a 2gb MMC card on which I've long since partitioned and copied my operating system per Fanoush's excellent hacks, and I'm in fact operating my 770 from the MMC rather than from flash. And I do wish to retain what I have on my MMC and be able to revert to its use if need be. Thus, I intend that any installation of OPEN-ROX would be on my flash rather than on my MMC. Does this sound plausable and attainable to you? And if so, which of your various above-designated sites in this thread should I utilize in order to accomplish this? I hope I'm not asking for too much guidance from you in this regard. Many thanks and regards, Jim

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

ascherjim, my old WM6.tar may work in flash, but the last to, I believe are too big to fit in flash. Sorry!! Also not heard back from anyone else, does this work out of the box on a 770??? Inquiring minds want to know??

DCr33P, the minimo is only a shortcut, you need to install minimo for it to work. mplayer link is only for dragging files or links from minimo too, there is no frontend to it. Just drag a file to the mplayer icon and it will play fullscreen.

When your CPU is 100% open xterm and run "top" This will tell you what application is using you CPU up, my guess is metalayer-crawler, as I previously posted. This is a known bug from maemo, I expect it will be addressed in next flash revision.

No problem... boot to flash..

root in xterm.

(you need gnutar, which penguin links to all the time(thanks guy))

ok, this command is for an n800 internal mmc with two partitions, fat mounted /media/mmc2 and ext2 mounted /opt.. adjust for your situation

change to the opt dir

cd /opt
tar -cvzf /media/mmc2/backup.tar.gz *

to restore.. change to the opt dir

cd /opt
rm -rf *
tar -xvzf /media/mmc2/backup.tar.gz

all back

I'm in the same situation as ascherjim (only I don't have my 2G MMC yet :-).

I boot from a 512 MB MMC on which WM6 is already installed. Question is, do I have (or can I) get rid of it before I install ROX, and how ?...

I will post a removal script for ROX6 this weekend, Here is one for WM6

NOTE - MAKE SURE YOU ARE BOOTING TO HILDON BEFORE DOING THIS!

http://penguinbait.com/rmWM6.sh

download this file,

chmod +x rmWM6.sh

./rmWM6.sh

This will remove WM6 from your tablet, it leaves a couple of things behind, ld.so.conf / etc/profile /etc/osso-af-init/(some scripts) Nothing that will cause you any problems.

I forgot the links, I updated the above script, to also remove these, IF you downloaded it earlier, grab it again, or just delete the following links.

./home/maemo
./etc/others-menu/extra_applications/0779_WMaker.desktop
./etc/others-menu/extra_applications/0780_BWMaker.desktop
./usr/local/lib/libwraster.so.3
./usr/local/lib/libwraster.so

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

I am confused regarding installation of OPEN-ROX. Rather than risk messing up my 2gb MMC on which I'd installed a duplicate operating system on my 770 (as previously reported), I've taken an old 1gb MMC and flashed and installed another duplicate operating system on that, all in accord with Fanoush's above referenced hacks (which I'd used previously with the 2gb MMC). I'm not certain what to do next. Do I download the zhasper OPEN-ROX6 tar to my MMC operating system or to my flash operating system? In fact, I've done both, but cannot successfully untar either using any of the standard tar commands. Also, there's references above to such other tarred or compressed files such as http://penguinbait.com/tar, http://penguinbait.com/tar.gz and
http://penguinbait.com/bzip2 or http://penguinbait.com/bzip2.gz. What, if anything, do I do with these?

In other words, I'm at a loss. I've installed many applications on my 770 before, using the Application Manager or otherwise, but I can't say that I can follow, or necessarily even understand, the installation instructions in this thread. What am I missing?

download OPEN-ROX

download bzip2 or (bzip2.gz and run gunzip bzip2.gz)
mv bzip2 /usr/bin

download tar or (tar.gz and run gunzip tar.gz)

rm /bin/tar
mv tar /bin

Now, run
cd / <--- dont forget this
tar jxvf /path/to/file/OPEN-ROX6.tar.bz2

, it will uncompress to about 100MB

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

In your first post (who is read first) you can add:

1. That the boot on MMC is required because the memory flash have no required place.

2. Don't forget to boot on the MMC before untar the file.

Because when I read the first time, I was say "why don't untar on flash"

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

On my 770, I have created a new system on mmc as explained and boot well on it. After untar your file on / on mmc, the first reboot on mmc work well. But when I chose the menu to switch to OPENBOX, the screen became white forever ! The only action available is the power off button to shutdown the system. And after, when, on multi-boot menu, I choose the mmc2, the progress bar increase to ~80% and stop forever too!
Have you any idea about this?

Should be approx. the same size of the uncompressed *tar file. If I recall correctly, there are some file overwritten, so you have to take this difference into account. Right, penguinbait? :)

EDIT: The *tar has ~94mb.

You should be doing this on MMC, I do not know if it works on flash, I never tried. I keep my flash new unbooted? If anyone tries it, and it works on Flash and you still have room to run, let us know. Remember its going to use up all your space you have to install applications, not really sure why you would want to do this.

Thats Correct, it will use up a little more, because of whatever block size you used when creating your partitions. if you save a 2k file on 4k block, it will use the whole 4k. So it comes out to be a little larger, roughly 98-99 I think

Penguinbait: OK, I've installed OPEN-ROX apparently all right on my MMC, and it does look great. Now, I just have to figure out/get used to working it. On boot-up, it states the following:

1) "Applet quit without ever creating a widget!" What does this mean?

2) "Error saving panel /home/user/.config/rox/sourceforge/ROX-filer?pan_Default: Permission denied." Is this anything I need to be concerned with?

Anyway, as I said, it looks great, and it'll sure be interesting (and fun!) to run it through its courses. Many thanks -- and congratulations. Regards, Jim

Re: OPENBOX-ROX Now Available

How About some email -- This will create a Email Icon/Menu entry in Office

cd /
tar jxvf /path/to/sylpheed-install.tar.bz2

From Tools menu, > "Menu Refresh" (Note this will restart ROX) Any ROX windows will be closed, all other windows will remain intact.

http://penguinbait.com/sylpheed-install.tar.bz2

If you decide you want to remove it, from xterm, run rmEMAIL.sh

Note, its a little hard to setup the account because of the window size, once I filled out everything, I was able to press OK, with the dpad enter, even though I could not see it. Once up, it was pretty useable, Give it a try, you can always delete it. Also if you have any other versions of sylpheed on your system, you may not want to install this, I am not sure if it would mess it up?

The error message can be ignored, it will happen everytime you drag items to the desktop/taskbar. When it is locked it will error, it will leave the item on the desktop/taskbar when locked, but restarting ROX they will be gone.

The error saving message is because your desktop and taskbar are locked, in order to not have to edit a file to fix accidental drags. If you want to add an ICON to the desktop or taskbar. You must first unlock them, (Tools > Desk-Task Settings > Unlock)

I recommend leaving it locked unless you want to change something. Everytime you try to drag something and you accidentally drop it on the desktop/taskbar, you have to edit a file to remove it. I will work on a better solution for this. So many little things to make better.

I can see, I am going to have to make a page, detailing more information. All of this is documented, it past versions and other posts.

Some 100 Meg uncompressed... That would be less than 60 Meg in compressed jffs2 format. Should fit fine in the flash memory unless your packed up already....

jlbrd, did you install python before, starting openbox? I have no 770 to test with, but it should be working? Are there other 770 users, using OPEN-ROX with it working?

I am going to have to buy a used 770, or see if someone will donate one
I have the same results as jlbrd on a 770. White Screen, then after reboot, stops at ~80%. Any thoughts?

OK, maybe this is stating the obvious, but. Do not attempt to boot from it if you can not switch to it. If it does not work one way it wont work the other. You need to boot to hildon, ssh to 770. as "user" run swm3.sh and see what if any output you get. You can also run "sh -x /usr/bin/swm.sh" this might give you better output.

ps -fe | grep ROX

ps -fe | grep openbox

Penguinbait: On my installation of OPENBOX-ROX on my 770, I in general cannot figure out how to close down whatever application I might be in (i.e., Rox-Filer), and more specifically, I cannot close down (get out of) the white Internet connection screen. Which buttons for accomplishing such am I not seeing?

This is confusing to me. Does it apply specifically to this new Openbox/ROX package ? Because with the previous WM6 archive, I was never able to switch from Hildon to WM on my 770 (as several others have also reported). However, I can boot to WM and back just fine...

It should be the same on the 770 as the n800 I think,.

minimize window option is bound to the (zoom -)
(Toggle) maximaze window/restore window is bound to (full screen)
close window is bound to (zoom +)

These are the three buttons on the top edge of the 770/800 You can also click on the x to close the window, its small but there, if it is not, perhaps something else it wrong?
