Support all the great moderators here

I know I might not have many post or Karma to gain support of many of you but I really feel that Texrat handled the situation of the P1.2 Leak very well last night.

For starters, I was up awake last night reading the topic from the 1st post till page 52 and finally went to sleep.

Texrat would pop in every 2 pages to remind everyone that the Firmware was not Official, that it is a leak and that it may cause damage to the phone/computer..

I believe he made some really good choices cos of the following..

- Shutting down the thread would have caused everyone to move to other non moderate-able forums where noobs might have been flashing away all night..

- A Rom is a Rom.. unless Nokia's PR official steps in and claims the ROM its free for distribution. When the days of custom Roms and Modded Roms come (if they ever) would you consider them to be illegal as they contain some bits of nokia's proprietary code and Ban the Rom cookers? Well that doesnt sound too "Open " to me.. I agree that Nokia CAN stop this but this is NOT Nokia Support Forum!!

- It was the first Rom leak for the n900. Who would have known what is the "right' course of action.

- It was Friggin 3am!!! He was up all night just to remind the ppl that the rom might be buggy, laggy or may even brick your phone.. Give the guy some credit and stoop convincing him to Resign.

Texrat .. ur awesome:).. Dont resign..

People who are aware if they might've made a mistake (doesn't matter whether it was true or not) are better than new guys with no experience :)

Hard to write this:

I'm very disappointed, yesterday I had a sad confrontation with Texrat, and he was not the responsible of my angry state.
Hard to be a troll and try to defend a mod, but I must, moderation is an art, sometimes you can be right, sometimes you can be odd, but never can be a dictator... And Texrat does not fail in that.

This week is a strange, odd and disappointing one. What about a days of meditation and relax? When the lacks become official lacks, trolling-posting-helping-coding will be funny again, no rude like this days.

Texrat, excuse me if I offended you yesterday: you said that I'm a young man, I said you are old one... and WE were right, so what about being example of an young one and don't resign in this horrible week?

I think thats a little unfair. Moderation is a pretty thankless job. Texrat deserves all the thanks he gets here and more. Hes done a good job even if he thinks he made mistakes in the leaked 1.2 thread.

A thank you thread is the least he deserves.

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

I can't support the title of this thread as I've never seen him at a mod, let alone reat one...

:)

However, I do think his moderation style is balanced and appropriate, and that his handling of the leak fiasco was as good as it could be given the general, justified reluctance to ban the noise generators trying to drown the signal.

Viqsi 2010-05-02 20:29

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

I'm honestly not sure how the situation could have been better handled without being more draconian, or having more moderators to help herd the flock of howling monkeys that constituted the PR1.2 leak thread.

So far as I can tell, things went down as follows:
1) the leak occurred and was posted here,
2) Texrat showed up, pointing out that it's unofficial and therefore potentially bad,
3) bummer showed up, asserting that this was illegal and therefore irresponsible to permit, and that the thread should be removed immediately,
4) Texrat essentially noted that the genie was already out of the bottle, and that he'd rather keep the inevitable firestorm contained rather than make futile attempts to wipe it out,
5) in the meantime, bummer took some significant abuse from other posters who didn't like the idea of somebody suggesting that this be stopped,
6) Reggie eventually showed up and said "we can't be associated with something potentially illegal", cleaned out the links, and closed the thread,
7) bummer posted a "victory thread" restating Reggie's post with some extra "told ya so" thrown in,
8) Texrat opted to resign.

I would think that the two largest issues that need to seriously be addressed are #5 and #7. The rest is, IMO, perfectly acceptable under the circumstances; during the course of the thread the status of the leak was unclear (despite bummer's assertions) and moving prematurely could have caused other problems. What should have been stopped, however, is the childishness and egotism that first caused bummer to be attacked, and then prompted him to attack back in return.

At least, that's what it looks like from the outside here.

(Frankly, as I've posted elsewhere, I'm astonished and appalled that those kind of personal attacks are permitted at all. There's forums I'm part of where #7 above would earn a temporary ban for moderator abuse...)

Monsieur Texrat...
We can force you: we can make this thread overwhelming and only a mod could stop it. And I'm sure other mods are busy elsewhere.
Et voilą!

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

We also have to consider the fact that Texrat had no mod powers in the section with the leak. He did the best he could as far as I'm concerned

@atz... fun idea, but I don't... Today I'm a Tex fanboy (oooucchhhhhhh... it hurts me writing "fanboy" and "I" at same line!) and this is not the place, I think.
I want to be banned by him, but NOT THE DAY I'M FIGHTING AT HIS SIDE!

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

Dammit I hate drama. Just figures that trying to get out of the spotlight and deflect attention to the actual issue would trigger the Law of Unintended Consequences.

First I really appreciate the thoughts expressed. That was unexpected.

I don't want to look like a "childish quitter" so I'll think about what's been asked. That said, I'm still embarassed at not being a little stricter in that now-infamous thread. I don't have actual moderation duties in that thread so all I could do was talk, and in hindsight part of that should have included:

- strong warnings against filesharing;

- an earlier escalation to other moderators in the hope that one with jurisdiction there could edit threads as needed

If failure to do those things was incompetence, well, mea culpa.

One thing that was driven home for me in the outcome is that we need not simply more moderators but broader time zone coverage. I was only up due to being on call for work... and would have welcomed one or two others online to discuss the issue with in the background.

Anyway it's clear now what's what but I should have worked harder. I apologize to the community for that lapse. If I do stick with moderating it won't happen again.

Thanks all.

@texrat

I was kinda shocked when you decided to be a moderator, you wear your passion on your sleave and I wasn't sure how that would translate. But you've been nothing but excellent: Smoothing and Soothing. Your instincts have been good so keep trusting them, and anyone that expects you to be perfect can go f*ck themselves. You're quick to admit your mistakes; not much more can be asked of someone that decides to moderate. We have your back because you have ours.

Hugs and kisses, bro.

I think part of the problem here was that Bummer kept posting pretty much the same thing again and again and was on a few occasions probably just as bad as some of those that had a pop at him.

I know as I was one of those that said to chill out and that Bummer would be better advised to start a separate parallel thread to discuss the legalities etc.

Re: Support Texrat for being a great moderator

The moderation of the thread in question was absolutely fine - it was made clear by Texrat that the source of the firmware was unclear and installation was discouraged. He did it with good humour too and that is something that this forum is sorely lacking in at times.

Perhaps. I wasn't fully awake to watch the whole thing, and so I don't recall every detail. I just remember thinking "this guy might have a valid point; how nice to see the howler monkeys flinging poo anwyays." http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/cringe.gif

Again, though, if there were more moderators present, then that sort of thing could be counseled against. Sadly, that doesn't appear to have been the case. :(

Is there a warning points system here? I know vBulletin is capable of same; I'm just not sure if that's set up here (I've yet to piss folks off to the point of needing a warning - perhaps I should work on that if I want more info about moderation processes here? ;) ). Would probably be more effective than "okay, that's it, you crossed the line and you're banned".
