Cannot get more than 5mbits with the WLAN connection on my N900

Hi all,

I have a 30mbits connection at home (verified) and connecting from my laptop via WLAN I can easily get ~22mbits (WPA2, WirelessG)

Connecting with my N900, be it to this AP or to any other (e.g. Public ones that I know are very fast) I cannot get past 5mbits download.

What's the matter? Conky tells me I am connected at 54mb/s and quality is good, so...

Anyone seen similar behaviour?

Cheers,
J

Actually, 5 mbit/s is more than enough for seamless browsing. (The browser's rendering speed is the bottleneck.)

I will expect for more answers but thank you for your opinion. I don't agree with you at all and you miss the point :)

Just on the immediate, if I want to stream media from my home network that speed is beyond low and unsufficient. Also, what is the point of claiming Wireless-G support if the speeds are more like Wireless B? ;)

Re: Cannot get more than 5mbits with the WLAN connection on my N900

From my experience N900 is not powerful enough for high speeds, if I reach 2Mb/s on torrents the device gets non-responsive until speeds get down. And real life G speed is MAX 3Mb/s,it usually is about 1.6-2Mb/s for me. When accessing windows network it is even slower. So 12-24MBPS is the limit of G in real life, 54 is "in theory". ( I had many routers, laptops so I am talking from experience, no other knowledge ). In short. It is all OK, nothing is wrong or ever will get better. Hope I helped.

double check that your wireless receiver power is set at 100

I didnt know you could do this...Would you mind to share how to set it to 100% ?

Settings -> Internet Connections -> Connections -> (Select wlan) Edit -> Next -> Next -> Next -> Advanced -> Other.

:)

Try reducing the number of connections, I think the number of connections Transmission attempts to make causes the N900 to get non-responsive.

turning off wlan powersaving does improve the performance in some cases but at cost of battery life

As a test, try to download into /dev/null and see if it is any faster. Writing to the flash memory is really slow. I have 25mbit and experience the same kind of speeds as you, but I haven't tested it this way yet.

Writing to the flash memory is slow? I've seen speeds of 10MB/s easy when copying files over USB onto the internal flash, thats ~80Mb/s and should easily be able to cope with a wifi connection...

yeah, I think something is up with this. Might log an error report and see where it leads...

I have noticed that when I SCP files over wifi it is painfully slow - 300KB/s (as measured by filezilla)

Re: Cannot get more than 5mbits with the WLAN connection on my N900

I can get around 8mbits with the powersaving setting to the max, so it's definitly not a wireless problem...

Tried with any other router or AP ?

Maybe this is router problem, I am using ASUS WL-500W.

But the writes tend to block all I/O and use 100% CPU waiting, which could(?) interfere with wifi driver operation. It was a theory. :)

Remove the encryption. You'll get wayyy faster speeds, but absolutely no security... That's one way.

Re: Cannot get more than 5mbits with the WLAN connection on my N900

A quick iperf test from my wireless laptop as server to my n900 as client shows around 6.86Mbps.

I'm using a DD-WRT'd WRT54g. Powersaving is enabled on my n900.

Well, apparently it's not the SSH encryption making my SCP transfers so slow.

EDIT:
Powersaving on/off/intermediate has no effect at all for me. It stayed within the ballpark of 6.86Mbps with each setting. I even disconnected from wireless then reconnected. Short of a reboot, I don't actually know if the settings took effect or not.

How did you measure the speed? Downloading random files from the internet is not reliable.

And as others have written already, check power saving and send power.

Re: Cannot get more than 5mbits with the WLAN connection on my N900

No, I mean the WEP/WPA encryption. For example on my WRT610N with a Wifi-N card that "syncs" at 300Mbps, I can get transfers at about 18 MBytes/s, and if I enable WPA, it falls at about 8 MBytes/s.

Linksys w/Tomato, no power savings, WPA2, using speedtest, I got:

I use speedtest as well here www.zuol.ch/tools/speedometer.aspx and get the same result as the initial poster has. 4470 down and 1224 up.

Same test on computer brings up 20619 down and 1123 so my ADSL line can provide higher speed.

Router is set to 100 %
Conky tells em Rage 54 Mb/s Quality 80%
