Re: N800

Well, the question is whether MicroB on the N800 is really better than Opera on the N800. You should definitely update to the latest firmware, but browser alternatives to keep in mind are Tear and Firefox.

Re: N800

In this case you are using microb. Enter in the URL bar:
about:
and you will see the current version of the browser.

The fastest browseer on my N800 is "tear". You find this browser installation file here:

Re: N800

there is a reasonable choice. I think they are all in extras, or via a quick google search. Two alternatives I have tried are below, but I have always come back to the built in browser, for it's allround performance etc.

Tear - fast, low disk space, but does not support certain password schemes, which ruled it out for accessing my home server.

Firefox - really good browser, quite quick once loaded, and lots of features, but takes up a load of disk space. Has geo-location, and will sync history and bookmarks with firefox on your desktop.

there are others, but the above are the real alternatives to microb (which is what the builtin browser is called.)

Re: N800

Regarding the latest firmware. I just checked at Nokia and it says the latest is OS2008 Feature Upgrade v. 4.2008.36-5. However when I checked my N810 is said the current rev is 5.20008.43.7. How can that be?

Opera 10 for n8x0 has been released. It is fast, real fast. And works very well (except for the fact that there is no flash).
For me the best choice.

As far as I know, the available browsers for OS2008 are;

microB,
Opera Mobile,
Fennec (Firefox),
Minefield (Firefox),
Tear.

I myself keep coming back to microB,

Re: Web browser options for N800?

got a serious issue with the microb bug that reads the center dpad (i use it to bring up the thumb keyboard) as return, resulting in some problems. Not sure if its fixable by the community either, as i think the problem is in the closed UI (unless the UI is now opened and i have missed/forgotten), not the microb lib itself.

There is also:
Midori
Arora
Dillo
Diggia@web

I've been using tear since it came out. Fast and stable.
The new opera is nice but no power mangment means it will drain the battery if left open, even when you lock the screen.

strange, it is not at all fast for me, on my n800. it takes many times longer than tear to load any pages.

The new Opera worth too a mention.

Wow, finally! An N800 thread. THANK YOU! :) Yeah, personally, I bounce between Tear and MicroB on my N800. I guess Midori is supposed to be pretty good too but I never tried it.

Midori is pretty good. The functions (History, Bookmarks, etc.) are much easier to use. Although past 3 tabs it gets difficult to manage, and (it's no problem for me,) but there's no grab and drag page scrolling. You're relegated to the scroll bars.

Oh, and Macuco.

Re: Web browser options for N800?

Also: Opera Mobile/Mini 10.

No flash, and rare random crashes (with no restore tab or dedicated history function), but it's one of the best browsers I've used so far in all of Maemo (3, 4, 5).

There's even a usable portrait Virtual Keyboard. ;)

Yes, it's like desktop browser, but (very) slow (because of Qt).

Can we get more Browsers on the list? Has anybody got the Chrome browser working on their N800/N810? I have Ubuntu mid version on my Samsung Q1 working pretty good. I like using (Midbrowser) on it. This browser is sleek and fast, it also pans very quick. Can we get it working on the N810? There is an armel version of it we can try to get running possibly.

There's a chromium port going for Fremantle, but I'm not sure if the developer has any intentions of backporting to Diablo, seeing as he's got his hands full.

(That's in extras-devel. It may cause instability and crashing.)

It's true, Chrome is fast and good. On a desktop. Or on your umpc, with a 8-900 MHz Intel cpu and 1 GB DDR2. Do you really think it can be so fast on a n8x0?

Chromium is pretty fast on the N900, and it's specifications are slightly higher than the N8x0s.

It might be just around MicroB's speed, I guess.

browser speed these days are mostly about javascript, iirc.

Re: Web browser options for N800?

tear is nice but ageing. could someone, please, explain what those tear-improvements are?

as for n800 browsers:
- firefox (fennec) is nice, but sometimes too slow. it has innovative user interface (drag to show toolbar). usually it helps but sometimes the new UI does work against site design (e.g. google reader).
especially good in fennec is clever double-click to zoom!

- new opera is nice, but i expected, it would be a little faster. zooming is not smart, as in firefox. in fact, sometimes it zoomes in/out when I want to click the link.
bonus for opera is "turbo mode", that can help with reducing traffic data, if you use internet connection where you pay for data transfered.

- tear is nice and reasonably fast, probably fastest. UI is IMHO worst from the above mentioned browsers.
One feature I really dislike is you have to be carefull what to touch, if you want to drag the page. if you touch link, it will act as link.

- microb stopped working in my n800 and i don't care :-)

tear would be my favourite, if some problems would be fixed.
I also expect it would be faster, if new version with recent webkit build could be made.

especially downloading seem to be slower than expected.

opera mobile is working very well for me on s60 phone (nokia n85), probably the best available browser for s60.

maemo version is ok, could be better. mobile firefox and tear are better in some areas.

Modifications made to Tear by Mitrandir. They will hopefully be integrated with the regular Tear source code. The Tear thread is long, but the discussion you want picks up here.

You are right that the decompression seems to be slow work for the N800's processor. Turbo could also sometimes cause delays at the other end, if Opera's proxy servers are busy. These delays counteract the time saving that you get from reducing the size of the download.

The net effect depends on the speed of your connection and the kind of web page you are trying to load. On a fast connection, or browsing lightweight pages, Turbo is likely to be slower than non-Turbo. It's the other way round when you are loading a bloated page via a slow connection.

Here is an example. (Sorry that the web page is not in English. There is an English version at http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html . My results are for the Italian version.)

Connection: 56k dialup -> Zoom BT modem -> N800.

Web page : http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/

Non-Turbo Opera Mobile took approx. 2 min 30 sec to display the page completely. Tear was about the same. Opera Mobile with Turbo took less than 1 min 20 sec. In all cases, the page had been loaded to the browser on a previous occasion, so any caching effect should apply to all three. Turbo compression reduced the download from nearly 1 MB to about 315 kB.

Another comparison can be made by looking at one of the widgets on the page. The site is about train travel, and the widget in question is for looking up train times and ticket prices. This widget became usable in 19 sec. on Opera Mobile with Turbo, but not until 46 sec. on Tear.

For me, it's all about Firefox. Definitely not the fastest, but it's also not that slow. It's features really give it the edge.
