Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Great! It's good to see that Minimo development on the IT platform hasn't died off.
All hail Antonio! :p |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Woohoo! Google Docs and Spreadsheets is working...
We're not worthy, Antonio! |

I've got a Google doc open, but how do you enter text? I can see the document, but can't figure out how to get the virtual keyboard to apear to enter text onto the document.

It has some issues with lag time and mine just crashed and can't get up. It didn't crash the system though and it is a step in the right direction by adding some missing functionality. |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Very cool, I can browse MoinMoin locally without needing a network connection ...
|
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
:D Nice. No bookmarks yet? (it looks like bookmarks are available at first, then disappear after you go to the first page)
Yahoo mail sems slow. You get a choice between clasical or the newer beta -- the new beta doesn't really work, but classical works ok. Of course, it starts with a message about no /res/start.html file. Where is minimo installed? (I haven't figured out how to use whereis or locate here yet.) Great to have it as an option! |

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Let me make it clear that I don't consider Google Docs and Spreadsheets necessarily a Good Thing <TM>. On a desktop, with a permanent connection to the Internet, perhaps, but not on a tablet, especially if I have to forego about 2/3 of my battery life to edit documents. And I'm not even talking about the times I don't have a connection, when Google's apps are essentially non-existent...

- can we suppose that 3G coverage can compensate - if not too expensive - no wi-fi coverage - can we work off-line by saving a local version , say a spreadsheet, which then we can edit w/ Gnumeric for instance - is there a better/perfect solution? about power consumption, that's clearly a bottleneck, can we expect that some decent saving will be made by OS improvement? or? Except that it can hardly go online, has an ancient B/W screen and a file system that nothing in the Known Universe understands. But it's a heck of a notetaker and numbercruncher. Quote:

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Because nobody talks about Google Calendar, I assume it still doesn't work?

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
thx
I like 0.16.11-1 much better than the previous version :) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
I like this version also but it is still crashing too often. It should be more stable otherwise it's not useful for internet. I was hoping maybe too much that this version would be the stable one.

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Just goes to show how different two person's experience can be... what platform are you on ? N800 ?
On my 770 this version is an incredible improvement over any of the previous ones. Of course the one just before (0.16.9) was the worst of all : difficult to install (missing dependencies) and so instable there was clearly something wrong - it never survived more than two or three clicks (on links, scrollbars, almost anything) and a handful of seconds... This 16.11 is like a dream : the upgrade went right through, and it's been running for a couple of hours or more without crashing - itself or the tablet :-) I've been making the rounds of all the sites I usually visit with the tablet, without any issues. As always, the browser startup is slow, but once it's loaded it's very fast, feels snappier than Opera. Then I cycled through all the sites I can't - or don't dare - use with Opera because of the AJAX problem : Google mail (in full mode), Calendar and Maps, Netvibes, TiddlyWiki, sometimes together in several tabs... It does pause and think sometimes, but it did them all, and it's still going... In my book this is more stable than Opera itself :-) The new interface is much nicer and more usable. This a very welcome surprise -- here we were thinking that minimo was all but dead in the water, and not only does it move ahead, but all of a sudden we jump from nice-but-flaky alpha versions to a perfectly usable beta... Thanks Antonio ! Can't wait for 0.2 :-) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
I am quite surprised by the low level of feedback to this release, here and elsewhere.
It used to be that each new version of minimo for maemo would generate a flurry of excitement and comments (positive or negative) in these forums. It may just be that this one (which is a *major* upgrade, despite the small numbering gap) turns out to be the best thing that ever happened to my Nokia in terms of fulfilling its "Internet Tablet" mission, yet the silence is astounding. Of course, I for one consider the lack of Flash, and the associated intrusive ads, as a quality, so YMMV :-) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
yeah well. I donwloaded it. opened it up and saw massive numbers of buttons eating my screen real estate. So that was a minus. Appreciated the tabs. Then tried to go to a site and it crashed. Haven't touched it since.
Kind of reminds me of Sylpheed. NIce app. Lots of options, but falls down on the user interface front. On a small screen environment, massive amounts of GUI items is NOT good. Now if only the built in mail app would show images inline... |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Actually, in full screen mode minimo has more screen real estate than Opera, not less. The buttons are SVG, not bitmaps, so it should be simple to allow them to be resized at will.
0.16.9 was unusable on my 770, so far 0.16.11 is rock solid. Depends on a whole lot of outside factors, I guess... |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
I'm using N800, sorry not mentioning that. It is obvious that these crashes are N800 related because in 770 it doesn't crash. Minimo for Maemo is getting better but as always there's something that need to be fixed. My experience with Opera in N800 is very good, crashes happens but so rarely that it is not irritating. I'll say: good work Antonio, keep up the good work. We'll have to use minimo more to see what's going on in N800. My intention is to start using it now even if it's crashing because maybe that way I can help to get info when and where those crashes happens.

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
I left a comment on Antonios blog.
An addition - Minimo never stopped loading the Engadget home page, I had to close the app after 5 minutes of waiting. I like the improvements, they're a step forward but minor usability issues still need to be addressed. The inability to drag scroll the page is annoying - enabling "Pan Scroll" mode is only a temporary (and annoying solution) and also eats screen real estate. In short, many niggles remain but it's getting better! :) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
absolutely not true about screen realestate. i loaded the NYTimes on both browsers and the built in browser in it's default settings shows 6 more lines of text than minimo in it's default settings. As well the Minimo browser choked on a number of characters on the page.
i appreciate the effort but I'd still lose the buttons. |

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
The NYTimes may be showing more lines because the default text size is smaller on Minimo than it is on Opera.
You can lose the URL bar by clicking the "@" button, which makes more screen available to the web site. The tabs obviously consume part of the screen and with only the toolbar shown it's obvious that the Minimo UI uses more screen real estate than Opera (tabs + toolbar) however the tabs provide a useful function so I think they're worth it. |

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
I've been enjoying the new version (and the new buttons!) but have been having lots of problems with pages that never finish loading (Mostly on slashdot). It hangs the whole browser up, making it impossible to navigate, even in another tab. Pressing stop does nothing, and it's a little frustrating because the only fix is close and re-open Minimo with its lengthly load time. Still, overall the new version is a vast improvement. I really like the homebase feature instead of the bland bookmarks page before. Keep up the good work toniktoo!
Larry P.S. Looks like the reason it's hanging on slashdot is that it's trying to do something with www.google-analytics.com Possibly some bad Javascript making it hang? |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Thanks for all feedback. Some points:
** As milshouse pointed out, URLBAR can gets hidden/showed by pressing the "@" iconed button , on main toolbar. ** also, if you guess some toolbar button useless, go to PREFERENCES->LAYOUT tab . There you can check on/off what buttons you what to appears in you toolbar. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...layout_tab.jpg I hope it helps Btw, I compiled some suggestion already in a 0.16.12 release which I am going to release today yet, I hope ;) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Great! People, remember to press "save" -button when you leave the preferences tab because minimo crashes and won't start again until you restart N800 also. This is my experience and done it twice before noticing what I was doing wrong.

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
BUGGY ... thanks markko ;-)
|
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Thanks Antonio. Another nice touch for usability would be to make minimo activate the network connection itself, like Opera does, or the maemo App manager. Gnuite added this functionality to maemo mapper, so it's possible for third-party apps, too.
I think I'm going to switch over to minimo sometime soon, so this would be useful :-) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
This release is much better ,great work tonikitoo! I surf pretty much exclusively through Google Reader and this browser handles the google suite much better than the Opera browser. I have had a crash or two browsing some other sites I will continue to test and provide feedback.

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
I just started running minimo, not too bad! Crashed on me once, though I don't know why... any way of helping you debug it? Like some logs or something?

Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
On Antonio's blog it says :
* from AppManager o Add this entry into "new catalogue": + web address: http://home.ufam.edu.br/~agan/minimo/ + Distribution: bora + Components: user o "Refresh list" o Go to "Browser Installable applications" + pick "Minimo". Have you already tried this ? On my 770 it works, but not everyone gets the same experiences with App manager... :-) |
Re: New Minimo build 0.16.9-1
Got another update to minimo. The prefs finally worked on this one but it still hangs frequently and chokes on some charactures on pages.
