Media Streamer vs. Canola vs. ???
Hi- Newbie here. Just installed (my first application on a new N800) the Media Streamer application and haven't fully tested it, but it seems to work ok. I'm not really happy about installing the Nokia Home Media server program since I already have slimserver going for my Squeezeboxes. I would like to be able to listen to music from my media computer (which is always on) . I don't know any linux. I just want to be able to access my other computer to play tunes- what would be the best way to go? Is there a way to make the N800 work like a Squeezebox? Not sure whether I should post here or on the Slim Devices site.
Thanks. I love the N800 and can't wait until I get the hang of it- I've never used a PDA or anything like this, so it's a new world for me. - SL |
Re: Media Streamer vs. Canola vs. ???
Yes, you can use your n800 with slimserver. In fact there is a slimserver skin for the n800 (actually made for the 770), which on the build of slimserver I have, is at: 192.168.x.x:9000/770/
You just point your mediaplayer to stream: 192.168.x.x/stream.mp3 and control it with your browser at the above address, where 192.168.x.x is the IP address of the computer your slimserver software is running from. Your build of slimserver may not have the 770 skin, so just point it towards: 192.168.x.x:9000 If you have more questions feel free to ask. There should be some info on old posts too that you should search. |
Re: Media Streamer vs. Canola vs. ???
Hi Sam,
Media Streamer is geared towards interfacing with UPnP AV servers and clients. It can act as a client and controller for UPnP devices. There are a lot of UPnP servers and clients around (both hardware and software). Look at the UPnP entry on Wikipedia for some pointers on where to look. Canola can access podcasts, streaming radio and DAAP audio shares but not UPnP AFAIK. I can listen to all the music (provided it is in a format that the Nokia IT can play) on my Linux desktop using Rhythmbox and enabling the DAAP plugin (and making sure my firewall is not blocking the DAAP port). On Windows, I think older versions of iTunes used to serve DAAP in the standard format that other clients could tap into but more recent versions use a modified version that Canola can't read yet. |
