best DVD convertor and Settings?

Can anyone tell me what I should use to convert DVDs for my N800?
What format works best?
What settings work best?

Thanks all..

Hi,
To convert videos for the N800 I'm using iriverter (http://iriverter.sourceforge.net/). It is a very simple UI on top of mencoder.
It is very easy to install and to use, and allows DVD encoding very easily.
I have made a N800 profile for it (attached).
  • Save the profile in the iriverter/profile directory (don't forget to remove the .txt extension added to allow attachement in this post)
  • Launch iriverter
  • In Options menu select Device > Nokia > N800
  • In Options menu select Bitrate and adjust according to your needs
  • In Options menu select the target video size. Both works OK, 320x240 is less CPU demanding and allows lower bitrate (thus smaller files).
  • Select the source, file, directory or DVD
  • Press the Convert button and go get a coffee / whisky / what ever you like waiting for transcoding to complete
The only drawback is that it generates XVID type of content not supported by the N800 media player. It means you'll have to
  • either change the file codec tag using "FourCC Code Changer" to make it look like DIVX
  • or play it using mplayer (my recommendation)

In terms of setting, what I've been able to identify so far is:
- stay close to 30 frames per second to avoid clipping effect (a test at 12.5 was nearly unwatchable).
- keep video size in one of 320x240 (QVGA) or 400x240 (1/4 of screen resolution)
- with those settings and depending on quality / file size you are expecting, target video bitrate in the 700~900 kbps.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Thanks, I will try it out when I get home tonight.
I just installed mplayer on my 800. Its choppy as heck. Of course, I was using a MP4 file.

Seems to use alot of resources.
Thanks A Bunch

Hi,
I just went to the site you sent and I am getting

An error has been encountered in accessing this page.

Can you check your end to see if you can get on?
Thanks again....I appreciate it.

The site is right, there is just a trailing ")" in the link, just remove it and it will be fine.

has anyone tried Media Converter?

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

I have used Media Converter 1.31 to convert divx to n800 format.. it works better than great, however it won't convert directly from a dvd.. that would just freaking rock.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

What I would like is a decent free dvd to divx converter, but they don't seem to exsist. If I had that.. it would be a pretty easy two step process to get great quality dvd to n800(or 770)

aflegg 2007-03-14 16:15

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

mencoder can do it, so therefore 770-encode can do it (even gives examples).

A DVD GUI would be trivial (I'd be happy to contribute and even host it): show key frames from each chapter, select one or more chapters/titles and kick off 770-encode (or mencoder directly).

And trust me, it won't be too hard...

I use PocketDivXEncoder (http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/) to convert VOB files to DivX. It's "pc" settings are decent enough on their own, but you can tweak them if needed.

Super© (http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html) isn't half bad either, but a little more complicated to set up right. I like PDE's "prediction" on the size of the files created, something I haven't been able to find with Super. Then again, Super has some options PDE doesn't.

Could this program work for the N800?: Acala DVD 3gp Ripper
http://www.cutedvd.com/html/dvd_3gp_ripper.html

I have converted 2 of my DVD movies with Acala DVD 3gp Ripper(for phone), but I do not have a large enough SDcard to insert into N800 to test.
Files range from 153MBto 320MB in size and have the extension 3GP, Mpeg-4 codec, and frame size 176x144(320x240 can be chosen).

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Hi,
Will (http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/) rip right from DVD?

Will the media player that comes with N800 play DIVX?

I installed Mplayer and its performance isnt too swift. No controls and its choppy. Maybe I dont know what I am doing. When a file is playing, no matter what I hit on the
screen, it wont pause or respond (once the file is playing) I end up rebooting the device.

Thanks

schmots 2007-03-14 17:42

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

the media player will not play divx. However I have done really good conversions of divx files to n800 format with mediaconverter

jazzbass12 2007-03-14 17:50

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

hmm, so I would need to convert 2x to go with DIVX?
Or use mplayer?
Have you used mplayer and what has your experience been? There must be controls. I couldnt find any.
Excuse the ignorance. Very new to this.
Coming from PPC world

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

I have installed mplayer, but found it to be unreliable. Its been a couple months since I installed it though.. it might be better now. However I just use Canola to watch the moves I have moved over.. terrific touchscreen interface

schmots 2007-03-14 17:59

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

however, since were talking about watching dvds on the n800 anyone not having the "watch for x minutes and it will pause or crash" problem?

Try using hardware buttons. Most useful actions are mapped to them (seek forward/backward, exit, volume control). For other more advanced actions (subtitles settings for example) you can invoke OSD menu with pressing 'menu' key. It should be possible to use touchscreen as well in the future versions, but I don't want to make UI stylus dependent (I'm mostly watching TV series in a subway on my way to work, using stylus is awkward there, I want to control the device with only one hand and have the other hand free). Anyway, you can always suggest MPlayer UI improvements in a proper forum thread or what is much more preferable - in garage project trackers. Reporting problems is also very much welcome, they can't be fixed unless we know about them :)

PS. MPlayer on N800 is still not good because of bad tearing, hopefully the next firmware will allow us to get a smooth video playback support. I'm still using Nokia 770 for watching videos myself :)

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Thanks for the reply on mplayer with 800..

Will Canola play DIVX? Gonna try that one out.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

I have had N800 for about a week, equipped with two 4GB 150X SD cards and latest OS.

Here are the two major problems:

1. The Video is jerky, with frequent freezes.

I installed MPlayer. I used Media Converter to convert a DivX file and a DVD VOB file, using High and then Medium settings. Nothing helps. Even the included Nokia clip plays jerky (looks like lost frames).

MPlayer takes somewhere from 30 sec up to a minute to load and it's hard to kill when it freezes.

2. The wireless card seems to be less sensitive that the ones for laptops. I only get good connection at home in areas with "excellent" or "very strong" signal. Forget about public Wi-Fi access points. A killer for an "Internet Tablet".

It seems to me that the device does not live up to consumer expectations and most of N800 enthusiasts are too forgiving and optimistic. May be it is just my device? Or me?

Does anybody have a clip that plays perfectly on his or her N800?

Thanks
Former N800 enthusiast

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

About the "jerkiness" of videos: I found that mplayer does indeed play quite jerkily; the built-in media player suffers from the same problem, albeit to a lesser extent.

Most curiously, I found that when I start videos from Canola, they play a lot smoother than when started from the media player directly. This is most weird, as Canola is supposed to be nothing more than a frontend to the media player. Freezes also appear to be less frequent in Canola, adding to the weirdness.

aflegg 2007-03-15 11:24

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

For the record, DivX *is* entirely one of the formats supported by the built-in media framework; used by Media Player and Canola.

It's just finnicky about the bitrates and resolutions of the DivX file in question, and the fourcc code used. More details in the wiki.

schmots 2007-03-15 12:03

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Less Wireless Sensitivity??? Then I think your the only one. I pick up signals from 8 blocks away. I also have no jerkyness on my videos.. are you running the most current firmware?

rheve 2007-03-15 12:25

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

In case you want to play XVID content with the media player, you can use the FourCC code changer (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/avic_download.shtml) and make it look like DIVX. Et voila :)

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Yes, I am running the most current firmware.
Let me clarify about Wireless sensitivity. I pick up a lot of signals, however it would not connect - "network error" or some such.

amadis dvd to 3gp. good resolution and fast. not free but you can try it out. i use it so i dont have to convert vids twice, one for my phone and one for the n770

You must remember that not every network is connected to the internet. Quality of the network also matters, I can surf the internet at 1.6 mbits from my neighbours wifi across the street at just 2 bars.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

I use the Sandisk V-Mate to record movies to my SD card. It's easy and simple to use. It connects to any video source: tv, vcr, dvd player. It even works like a tiivo as you can schedule recordings when connected to cable or satellite. I use 3gp format at BEST setting and it works flawlessly with the 800. I have 7 full featured movies in my 2 GB SD. RecordIng takes awhile as it only records in 1x speed but I'm very satisfied with the results. Sandisk V-Mate costs $129.99 at Circuit City and as low as $85 online.

Hope this helps.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Hi

I finally have sucess with DVD Video convertor after using iRiverter. One quick question. Someone posted profile file here. I am not sure where to place that file. Looking at the executable, its a shortcut running a target

C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaws.exe -offline "C:\Documents and Settings\Vinny\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\19\453c4453-3b50af41"

Also I cant change vidoe size. Instead it allows me to change target device name and it automatically changes the size. What is the correct size to have the movie fill the entire screen when watching?

Thanks

See this wiki page:
http://internettablettalk.com/wiki/i...eos_to_the_770

which says:

"400x240 is the ideal resolution to N800 users as well as Mplayer users
352x288 is the best one for 770 for general video and 288x208 is the best for action video "

If you have a 770 and use Mplayer, then 400x240. Without using mplayer, 770 needs 352x288. For N800 = 400x240.

A very easy way to get the correct size it convert the video into a good sized file with at least this resolution and then run it through Media COnverter, which is very fast. I convert all my videos first from DVD to an AVI, then run them through media converter. Hope this helps.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

I had tried mencoder with various options and sadly all failed.
Then I downloaded Iriverter and converted to 512x whateer resolution using irverter and it worked on my N810 flawlessly.

You can select form soome pre-select options and the Iriver PMP option works best for me.

lad 2007-12-10 05:23

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

Iriverter seems to be able to handle my copy-protected DVDs and is free. (The other freebies and IT specific programs didn't)- but it's not too flexible for resolutions as it's made for the iriver line.

If you want to spend a little, this is the one-click DVD-to-Nokia solution
http://www.makayama.com/dvdtonokia.html

It seemed to default to 400x240 on my wide-screen DVDs. But they still doesn't ~quite~ fill out the screen (tiny pixel sized bands) like those N800 promo vids and Gary Oldman! ;) But it's still quite satisfactory.

Re: best DVD convertor and Settings?

My laptop runs Ubuntu and I am using ConvertIt.

You can get it here. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ight=convertit

click Build > Add > and use this command line

ffmpeg -i INPUT -s 400x240 -vcodec mpeg4 -acodec mp3 -ac 2 -ar 16000 -r 25 -ab 32 -y OUTPUT

Now I don't have a N800 to try this out on, I am assuming that it will workl.
