CPU fan strange noise.

Hey, i think Off topic is the best place for this question.

My desktop (Hp Pavilion a6450.is) been running great for 1 and half years, but lately it randomly makes a very loud Whoooooooo sound for like 30 seconds then stops. Then starts again after like 3 hrs, it's almost as loud as hoover sound, and i can feel the strong wind it blows.

Is that normal? should i worry about it or not?

Can't send it to hp care point because my warranty expired 5 months ago...

Thanks.

its no big deal changing a fan as long as you know what you are doing. There is a fan atop your CPU and one inside your PSU if there is a wind coming from the rear of your box then you might have have to buy a new power supply.

Maybe its simply accumulated dust in the heat sink? the sound is really loud like WHOOOOOOOOOOO, i feel the fan is about to blow.

yeah they do collect dust and need cleaning once in a while, you will need some thermal grease to do a proper job.

If you are the sort of person who generates lots of static you will have to ground yourself

There's probably just dust in heatsink. Check the PSU also. And GPU. I had the same kind of symptoms when GPUs heatsink was pretty much blocked with dust. Temperature rose and fan hit the pedal to the metal.

Fan usually dies with mechanic noises when bearings are loosing the battle.

Edit: You don't need to take heatsinks of the computer. Just blow the dust out.

That's why you go to a sink and blow out the dust, I even removed the entire cooling device in a laptop just to blow out all the dust:)

Sounds like it may be a bit off-balance. That could be caused by something stuck to a vane, external damage or bearing wear. Make sure all of the vanes are clean for one. If bearings are worn or a vane damaged then the fan will need to be replaced. I'd recommend having another one on hand just in case.

i blew some air on the fans then hoovered the dust out, and everything seems fine now. It's so quiet that sometimes i can't tell if its on or off without the light. :p
