GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Hi N900 Users,
did someone experience the same issues like I did explained below: Sometimes the GUI freezes, well, how should I explain it... I can do everything except clicking on icons and widget on the Desktop. BUT, after a period of time ALL my clicks are executed. So suddenly every application I clicked on opens. Second annoying thing I observed is the fact, that applications do not respond despite the icon (or close, minimize, whatever button) gets highlighted. For example clicking on the close "X" Symbol gives me the visual feedback that is has been activated, but the application does not close. Is there a minimum push time to activate a button? Like push it for 2ms only highlights it but does not execute the command behind the button. Pushing the button for 10ms finally does what I expect. So am I just to fast? And if this is the case, is there a way to adjust the "timeout"? Cheers Bjoern |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
how odd. I have just started experiencing this as well. It first happened 2 days ago and I noticed that the calendar wouldn't open when I was clicking on the widget and it has just happened again about 5 minutes ago. I tried to open and app but nothing was happening on any icon. It was as if the whole screen becomes unresponsive.
Perhaps we can work this out by finding recently installed apps. What have you installed these last few days? |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
I have just started uninstalling some recent apps in case one of them is to blame. I took off the autolock app, world clock widget and some others which I'm pretty sure have not caused the issue.

Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
I've been experiencing the same thing since 2 or 3 months. It just happens randomly, sometimes twice per day, sometimes once per week... Killing hildon-home through X-Terminal lets you get rid of the particular instance of the problem but it won't prevent it from happening again.
Don't really know what's been causing it since I couldn't be bothered to find out. |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Well, it really seems to be random.
Is there straight forward method to find all the apps which are additional to the defaults? I don't have to kill anything. I just have to wait a while (Minutes...) and then suddenly everything I clicked pops up. And I have to close each app I desperately clicked on. The status applet and switching desktops works flawless, even the top left "Multi function button" works, I can go to the applications and start each application from there, but not from the Desktop. But did anyone experience the other issue, when clicking a button really short, it gets highlighted but not executed. Cheers Bjoern |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Yep got the same problem myself although selecting icons is a problem i can still scroll left and right to different screens so the touch screen is still responsive, a reboot solves it though.
Edit Also has anyone experienced battery drain as well? |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
What happens when you click on multiple Icons, then go to the applications (via the top left multi purpose button) and start a application from there?
Do all apps you desperately clicked on on your Desktop suddenly start? Maybe wait for a few minutes... I never had to restart my device because of this. Cheers Bjoern |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
I will have to wait until the phone locks up again and i will try what you said.;)

Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
same as blubbi here too.. i think it's time to take my n900 out of the window
|
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Is there a bugreport about this?
I couldn't find one. Cheers Bjoern |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Is it worth us listing down our last five apps we have installed and compare results OR is it too earlly to say whether its a serious bug?
|
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Well, it happens randomly and for me it was not the first time.
Run this to find all apps installed from "repository.maemo.org". I added "/var/lib/dpkg/status" just in case there are apps which come from a disabled or removed repository. Code:
dpkg -l | awk '/^.i/ {print $2}' | xargs apt-cache policy | awk '/^[a-z0-9.\-]+:/ {pkg=$1}; /\*\*\*/ {OFS="\t"; ver=$2; getline; print pkg,ver,$2,$3}' | grep -e "repository.maemo.org\|/var/lib/dpkg/status" Code:
3g2g-mode-selection-applet: |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
The two apps i see that we both have are
3g2g-mode-selection-applet: (new install) flashlight-applet: (updated) and these two apps i have recently installed or updated within the last 2 weeks. Do these apps ring any bells with you? |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
mmh not that I know, but when the lock occurs the next time, I'll uninstall those two and see what happens.
Anyone else here to compare the list of apps to mine? |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
conversations-inbox-widget
flashlight-applet Some others too but I don't believe they could be causing the problem (installed most of them after it first happened 3 months ago). Pretty sure I've had the 2 above-mentioned before it first occured. Edit: I THINK it first happened shortly after updating my conversations-inbox-widget (there hasn't been a new version for 3 months I think), but it could have of course coincided with installation of some other application (flashlight-applet? or something else). |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
I had a problem with another application and after uninstalling it the fault disappeared.
check this thread out http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=48242 Hopefully a few more people with read this thread and comment on it and we may get a fuller picture of what might be causing our desktop icons to become unresponsive. |

Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
This is most likely due to massive swapping and/or other disk activities. Do not forget that the mmc card access is very slow and once the kernel starts swapping pages there, things tend to freeze. And yes, there is a bug tracker for this:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6382 |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Well, I don't think this is due to swapping.
I have a CPU and Memory applet installed which shows the current CPU and Memory used as a bar in the status bar, and neither is near the maximum. Another evidence against load/swap: Starting a application which was unresponsive on the Desktop from the "Application Menu" works right away. So in my opinion something prevents shortcuts on the Desktop to be executed. |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
After reading bug report https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8723
It seems that most people who are experiencing this bug have a mixture of dataplan monitor, recaller and simple FM transmitter widgets on their desktop. I have all 3 which i have recently updated; so i'm going to disable all 3 reboot my phone and report back to this thread in 7 days time or before if the bug shows itself before that time. |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
@bazza i dont use any of those 3 widgets on my n9 but i also have a problem with this bug so i guess its not about this widgets.
|
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Well, I have only three widget active:
- Personal Dataplan Monitor - Personal IP Address - Calendar So if you remove "Personal Dataplan Monitor" I'll keep it. If your problem is gone and it occurs for me again, the probability is high that "Personal Dataplan Monitor" was the cause, otherwise I'll start to iterate trough all combinations of the three. Cheers Bjoern |

Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
It maybe a coincidence by my battery widget / icon won't stay bottom right of screen over the last few days. It has been playing up since around the same time as the icons freezing.
The icons froze yesterday and I left the N900 for about an hour to see if it would sort itself and it did not. A reboot was the only solution. |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
FWIW - I had similar symptoms on my device: app shortcuts becoming unresponsive when clicked (they'd do nothing for a while but they were 'buffered' so after about 2 minutes all the actions would be carried out at once). Also had substantial slowdown in moving between homescreens when this happened.
This didn't affect contact shortcuts, nor did it affect app's themselves (so, if I clicked on a desktop shortcut to a web page, or to any app, it would hang for ~2 minutes before starting ... but if I launched the same app from the app menu directly, it would start no problem durign that 2 minute period). In my case, I had multiple instances of the Desktop command execution widget running (from memory: rootfs % free, battery % remaining, last reset reason and uptime) - I removed them all and my problem was immediately resolved. May be unrelated, but anyone with one or more of those DCEW's running who's got similar problems may want to try removing it/them to see if it helps? |
Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
saw someone mention about time it takes for input to register in one of these posts, now provided theirs no tweaks been done top the kernel the normal touch time to register input on touchscreen is set as 10ms in the kernel driver for it if i remember correctly

Re: GUI (half) freez and unresponsiveness off clicked icons
Well i am experiencing some serious battery drain as well.:(
I charge my phone through the night every night and from average use at the end of each day i would normally have 3 quarters battery left. now my battery is ready to give out about 10 at night. This could be related to the freezing bug or it may not, but they have both come about roughly at the same time. Anyone else got unexplained battery drain who also has the desktop icon freezing bug as well? |
