Flash hasn't worked?

Flashed my device with global FW,yet I am still getting 'device memory full, cannot send\recieve sms'. Also, all of my contacts are missing, and all my backups. All this, aswell as random reboots and, when it does, all my background images dissapearing. A restart stopped the 'mem full' message, but hasn't cured anything else.
Anyone got a clue?

Cheers.

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

You've had this problem for a long time. Have you tried any of the other suggestions made in previous threads?

georgefjones 2010-05-15 10:54

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Yeah, but that advice mainly pointed to flashing, which I've done. But seeing as this only cured the problem for about 2 days, I was hoping someone would have another idea?

P.S. Also alot of these symptoms are new i.e lost contacts/backups. Also a restart normally cures the backgrounds issue.

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Did you try cpitchford's advice?

Have you also flashed the eMMC?

Maybe it's something you install after you flash that is causing the problems.

georgefjones 2010-05-15 12:15

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

I haven't tried that yet,no.But only because I thought that the problem probably goes further than that, what with the random reboots etc?
Not flashed the eMMC, no. Is that advisable?
I haven't installed anything after flash outside of maemo extras repo.

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Random reboots is worrying but I would take a good look at all cpitchfords advice as he/she is very determined when dealing with problems and appears to have the patience of a saint (helps a lot on the nokia forums).

Flashing the eMMC has cleared many persistent problems before, you just need to bear in mind that none of your data will be saved so make sure that you have good backups.

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

cpitchford's advice hasn't worked for me.

On my device now I can't run any applications, open any files/messages etc. Every time I attempt it the yellow error bar comes up saying 'Close Applications'. I should point out that this was happening before i tried the xterm commands post by cpitchford.

If i do have to flash the eMMC, I now have the problem that I can't get at any backup files I've got to export them and make them safe from the flash.

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

If you connect the device to a PC in mass storage mode you'll be able to access and copy backups from the backups folder; if you've setup SSH you can find the backups in /home/user/MyDocs/backups.

Before you start flashing everything, consider removing your SD card and see how the device behaves without it... That said, I think your only hope in this case is a complete reflash.

Something is not right here as you are saying you cannot get to your backup files so what did you do to do a backup?.
If you use PCSUITE the backup is on your pc not on the mobile and even if you did a backup using the N900 utility it would give you the option of where to save that and the obvious place is in fact your memory card, having said all that a flash would not clear anything from your memory card and not even an emmc flash would do that.
So this is very confusing what your saying.
Incidently IF you flash with the leaked fw you will not have the "enough space in rootfs problem"
Me thinks your not flashing correctly.

Isnt it amazing how many people are having problems with either losing or finding their backup's.
It is all too easy to just flash regardless of making sure you got at least one backup somewhere on your pc and it is said everywhere to do a backup before flashing so the mind boggles as to why people just flash without backups.
Incidently many of the apps developed on this forum are the very reason the os is screwed up because they are just not written properly and not enough care is taken to check out the installs for damaging results to the os of the N900.
Many if not all of the "rebooting" problems are due to the dangerous apps on the download section of this forum and the only way to correct them is as you say a proper complete re-flash.
The mind boggles as to why it is not pointed out on this forum the actual danger of some of the apps available.

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Of what you are describing here you probably filled up your rootfs.. so you need to empty it.

You do know theres a difference between extras, extras-testing and extras-devel? If so then you have surely seen many warnings especially when trying out a program from extras-devel. A program in extras-devel is under development.. thus unfinished. Not necessarily badly programmed.

But who can argue with the engineer.. :/

unstable phone, re-flash emmc!!

I had similar problem

georgefjones 2010-05-16 09:25

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Trying to flash eMMC now. I've done a normal flash and now trying to move onto the next stage (Flashing Vanilla Image) and I keep getting:

Image 'mmc', size 241163 kB
Version RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.41-1.VANILLA
USB device found found at bus bus-0, device address \\.\libusb0-0001--0x0421-0x0
1c8.
Raw data transfer EP found at EP2.
Using flashing protocol Mk II.
SU_GET_UPDATE_STATUS_REQ terminated with error code 1.

And then the screen on my n900 gets stuck on the 'Loading dots'.

Help??

hellnick 2010-05-16 09:56

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Did you reboot the device after the first flash? You need to remove the -R from the end of the command to stop the automatic reboot and then you flash the eMMC.

Yeah i removed the -R,then did the first flash. That completed. Then I left the device connected to the usb and entered the cmd for eMMC flash. The dots came up on the screen then they just froze and the above message came up on my PC.

You need to empty up your rootfs.. could you write "df -h" in the terminal and paste the output?

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

The issue with failing to flash eMMC has come up in bug reports

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7433

Happens on different o/s and cause/solution seems unclear - comment 12 would be worth trying. Also a chap called bonerp had same error, might be worth PMing him to see if he managed to solve it (looks like he now has a Desire so not a good sign).

georgefjones 2010-05-16 15:08

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

I left it a few hours, tried the whole process again, and it worked fine this time.
Now it's just a case of waiting and seeing if it has cured the memory problems and/or the random reboots!

Is it safe to reinstall the apps I had on previously? They were all only from maemo extras repo.

Thanks

hellnick 2010-05-16 17:40

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Stuff from extras should be fine. Good luck.

georgefjones 2010-05-18 17:40

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

I am still getting the message "unable to send/recieve sms. device memory full". Even after eMMC flash 2days ago!

This is getting ridiculous!

How can the memory have filled up so fast, when I haven't even installed anything or downloaded anything?

df -h shows 74% rootfs used if that helps?

hellnick 2010-05-19 05:05

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Try removing any sd card and restart the device - run it for a while without the card. Maybe try an alternative sim.

If you've completely flashed the deviceand not installed anything that is incomplete then you must consider that there is a hardware problem.

georgefjones 2010-05-19 14:10

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

Thanks, I'll try that.

If it is a HW problem, what are my options?!

hellnick 2010-05-19 17:52

Re: Flash hasn't worked?

The only time I had a hardware problem with Nokia kit was with a N73 a few years ago - I just sent it to a service centre and they replaced it. Might be worth raising it on the Nokia forums to see if anyone there has some better advice than I've offered... not hard really.
