New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

Guys looks like Rogers and Bell dominance is coming to an end :D

I read on Engadget that they are offering unlimited data and text for 65CAD a month:eek: with voice and texting!!!

However they are using HSPA AWS(1700/2100) does anyone knows if this frequency is compatible with N900?:)

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

HSDPA 900/1700/2100 is supported. I don't know about HSPA.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

I just switched to these guys, they launched in Edmonton and Vancouver last week. So now 4 cities in Canada have proper coverage.
It's a good time to sign up if you live in toronto, montreal, edmonton, or vancover. You can get unlimted everything for $40/mo. It's the same as their good friends and family plan, but it's available to anyone that signs up before nov 30. And of course it's the same AWS bands, works 100% with our n900.
This is a better launch that WIND, they seem more professional and are not blocking ports.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

Can you tell me what are the speeds you are getting as far as downloads are concerned?

You can try speedtest.net.

I might switch away from Wind...

PS: Do you know what email I could use for Family and Friends deal you linked to?

netC 2010-11-24 20:27

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

I do not see the Nov 30th deal on their website.
Only $45 + $10 for data add-on.

That is why the Friends and Family plan looks so great.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

Just signed up with these guys this Saturday, using the N900 without any problems.

They don't advertise on there website but you can get this deal at the store.

Download speeds are not the best but it is OK for what I use the device for. Taken in the Marpole area.
Download: 1.56 mbps
upload: 519mbps

There coverage is OK but you can defiantly notice that this is a new network there are dead zones in there coverage, hopefully these will be taken cared of in the near future.

adosanjh:

can you stream reliably from youtube - for instance?

I would want to see if you can watch good definition movie that is longer than 5 minutes - with no interruptions.

I am trying to ascertain if the speeds are consistent - this is more important to me than bursts (I am getting up to 3.5 mbps with 310mbps uploads on Wind, but it is flaky and never lasts over 2 minutes (due to their asanine method of network management).

I would appreciatte if you guys could test this and share with the rest of canuks - although the fact that there is no port filtering really seems amazing already!

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

netC,

The stream does seem to be fairly consistent but it has stopped on me once in a while but the last time I remember it was 5 minutes into the youtube video before stopping.

However I listen to the internet radio and it has not stopped on me yet. Again this is in the marpole area of Vancouver.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

yeah you get that exact deal i linked to, but you don't need to do the referral thing. just go into any wind store/dealer/kiosk, they should have it advertised. it still says family & friends $40 on my bill and has the exact same services.
download speeds in edmonton are 1.5mbit down and 0.8mbit up at the moment, seems about average. also, ports are all unblocked, unlike the few months i was stuck with WIND. I verified ftp, ssh, remote desktop, a-gps, so far are fine.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

In Toronto, I'm getting speeds about 1.0-2.0 Mbit down and ~1.0 Mbit up.

All ports are open, but certain types of traffic get major shaping. For example, I couldn't get GTalk video to connect from the N900, even though the latency is low (~100ms) and there's plenty of available bandwidth.

It's not new, they just changed their name. Btw, there is also windmobile.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

It's relatively new (they opened for business this year if I'm not mistaken).

I decided to test out some things, and here's clear evidence that YouTube, among other things, is being throttled on Mobilicity.

Measurements taken using DU Meter. The horizontal line on the graph is set at 2.0 Mbps, vertical grid lines are spaced every 30 seconds.

Test 1
TV Show (Usenet)
Video length: 21:27

I was able to stream this video after approximately one minute (the time to download the first 20,000KB segment).

Code:

Start time      11/24/2010 20:42:14
Stop time        11/24/2010 20:56:01
Elapsed time    13 min 47.0 sec
                                            Incoming        Outgoing
------------------------------------ ---------------- ----------------
Total of data transferred                    186.4 MB          3.7 MB
Maximum transfer rate                      308.9 KB/s        6.1 KB/s
Average transfer rate                      230.8 KB/s        4.5 KB/s

Test 2
Music Video (YouTube)
Video length: 5:08

This video was unwatchable, as it would stop to buffer every 10 seconds or so. To watch it uninterrupted, you'd have to pause it and let it load for about 6 minutes before you hit play.

Code:

Start time      11/24/2010 21:38:41
Stop time        11/24/2010 21:49:49
Elapsed time    11 min 7.6 sec
                                            Incoming        Outgoing
------------------------------------ ---------------- ----------------
Total of data transferred                    35.1 MB        694.2 KB
Maximum transfer rate                      137.9 KB/s        9.0 KB/s
Average transfer rate                      53.9 KB/s        1.0 KB/s

That doesnt look good, well what about Wind? do they block or shape traffic? I wonder if someone could do these tests on thier network. My contract with Rogers is almost over (thank god) I wanna switch to either Wind or Mobilicty .....

can you verify the APN you used is wap.davewireless.com
can you specify if you had their proxy 10.100.3.4:8080 enabled or disabled? i found it got the settings automatically, but it left the proxy disabled. works fine but i didn't check for throttling like you did.

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

hi there, can one of you guys please confirm...

1. whether the sms text time stamp is not off by 4 or 5 hours? This is a problem on the f-ing stupid Rogers network with N900. I've been trying to hack the phone to resolve this for my wife.

2. whether you can send and receive MMS messages OK. Rogers is able to get N900 to receive MMS but not send using fMMS. I know it's not the phone because I can use a T-mobile sim card and send/receive MMS just fine.

does anybody have experience using mobilocity in vancouver?

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

n900fan75,

1. SMS was also off for me when I was with Rogers, when I moved to Mobilicity you will be happy to know that the time is correct.

2. Sorry, Unfortunately I do use MMS

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

excelar8,

I am in Vancouver and using the N900, and the service has been good so far the call quality is great, there are a few dead zones but otherwise a good network.

You can definitely notice that this is a new network (dead zones) but that is expected and hopefully they will be able to work out the kinks in the coming future.

Thanks for that.

Does anyone have experience with MMS messaging using fMMS on N900 with Mobilicity? thanks.

Yup  I'm on Fido (which is the same network), and the time shown on incoming texts is way off.

Kinda funny though -- I'm in the process of buying a new home, and my real estate was texting me at what I thought was 5am.. for a while there, I thought she was just super keen to get things done for me ASAP until I mentioned it and she had no idea what I was talking about :p

I never use MMS, so I can't say. But sometimes texts I send take an insanely long time to reach the recipient..

yes funny thing. The crazier part is the fact that the cocky Rogers reps either in the stores or over the phone have blamed this problem on the phone. I don't think they know that they've set their SMS operation center to use GMT 0 zone when they should use -5. And all they've done to "fix" the problem on all Rogers specific phones is to hack them to compensate for the stupidity operation they are running there.

I do need to know if MMS works ok on Mobilicity with N900. thanks!

when you refer to dead zones, which sides of the city or buildings are you referring to?

adosanjh 2010-11-30 17:28

Re: New carrier in Canada (Mobilicity)

excelar8,

Dead Zones:
Just driving around you find that you are roaming even thou you are in the coverage area I am not sure it has to do with which sides of the city or buildings I am on.

Some people have mentioned that it will take some time for Mobilicity to fully cover every area in there "coverage" area, other say that they are not running there towers at full strength and will slowly increase the range at a later date (say 1-2 months).

I am leaning toward the later excuse since I currently am not getting charged for roaming, and once they increase the strength of there towers (say 100%) I will be charged for roaming.

Wind was making me sick, they talked it up so much, but it was costing me more than Rogers and they had ports blocked for months. They also dropped calls like crazy. Mobilicity might be a bit slower and less coverage, but for half the price, I don't care. I don't really think the speeds will get much better as they only purchased 10Mhz of bandwidth in BC and AB. Hopefully I'm wrong!

They might not have that stupid SMS timestamp bug, but wait till you check your voicemail. :(
