Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

Specs from website:

Optimized for WCDMA 900/1700/2100
Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900
Optimized for 3G networks on WCDMA 900/1700/2100 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900

According to this, only 2.5G?

Re: Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

I have my n900 running on TMobile USA and I can confirm 3g does work. I only pay for the 10$ "Dumb phone" plan.

Edit: I'm dumb i read that wrong. It only works as EDGE on ATT. Which is either 2 or 2.5g(i cant remember which). So to confirm for sure on ATT with n900 you will NOT get 3g.

I can say though i really recommend TMobile. Their prices blow everyone else away and i have not had a single problem with my service.

I am in South East Pennsylvania, can you tell me exactly what is the name of the phone plan you have and how much you pay. Thanks.

The first few months i had my n900 i had att and the edge speeds seemed fine to me... pages took maybe an extra 2 seconds to load. I switched to tmobile and its 20 bucks more a month now and the speeds are great but im always in a place with Wifi so i never use 3g anyway... Ill be switching back to att soon

Re: Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

No, it only works on 2.5G on AT&T. I have it, and while it's not as fast as 3G, it's not that slow either. Plus it sucks a lot less battery in 2.5G mode than in 3G. :)

For anyone who has used BOTH at&t (Edge) and tmobile (3G) can you comment on the difference in battery usage for similar usage?

Does 3G usage more than 20% battery on the same usage (20% is my experience when switching from Edge to 3G on the E71)

It works fine on AT&T's network so long as you don't care about being on EDGE. That's how I've been using it since December.

Re: Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

It is slower than My iphone. Not much, but it seems I use the wifi alot and that works more seamlessly than the iphone.

You know what's funny is that the apple store in dallas recommends you turn off the 3g service in the iphone and switch to edge to get better voice reception.

Yep, only 2.5G. I have AT&T and my N900 reports that it is using 2.5G. FWIW, it works well at that speed. But I can bet that skype and SIP phoning are not going to be very happy at those throughputs.

Re: Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

Hmmm, I was told that AT&T will charge you 30USD for having data on your phone, even if your phone doesn't support 3G. They said that N900 is the smartphone and smartphones plan is 30 USD irrespective of whether your phone supports 3G or not. I asked how will they know that I am using the 15$( Quote me If I am wrong) 2G/2.5G plan on the N900 (smartphone) instead of the ATT cellphone( Free Phone which came with contract), then the agent told me that they can find out which phone their customers use and will accordingly charge 30USD instead of 15USD.

Any thoughts? Some of you seem to be using the 2.5g plan on N900, If I am not wrong.

Hmm, Did you try the Hong Kong version?

The Hong Kong N900 could be different since HK operates similar with AT&T band. So if Nokia release N900 over there, the 3G band could be different than the one release in USA :).

Re: Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

yes its 2.5G on ATT and im gonna tell you if you browser alot and watch videos online.. its sucks... when i was on att with 2.5g... its really slow... so i recommend to go with t-mo even they have spotty 3g spot... but with 3g on t-mo, it does what i need.

Re: Does Nokia N900 work on AT&T USA 3G

HK N900 has the same specs.

Actually I am on a two year contract with ATT since January this year. I also have a N97 and I use the ATT 3G and it's fast but I don't use N97 anymore.

What is your opinion of AT&T's network on your N900? Considering it's only 2.5G

@resplendent
Did you ever have AT&T EDGE for your N900?

If so, what were/are your opinions on it?

Thanks

I have a family plan for me and my wife:

Even More Plus for Families 750 Talk + Text - $69.99
750 Whenever minutes
Unlimited Weekend Minutes
Unlimited Weeknight Minutes

I also added on $9.99 for unlimited web for my N900.

So for 80$ total my wife and i get 750 minutes, unlimited texting and i get unlimited web.

The cool thing about Tmobile is they offer discounted plans that require no contract commitment but dont offer subsidized phones.

This is perfect for something like the n900 because we dont want a phone from them anyways.

It was the best deal i could find around and like i said I'm very happy with my service!

Man i sound like a freaking commercial
