Nokia Wireless Keyboard
I'm currently using the SU-8W with my 3230 phone at present. As I understand it, the keyboard must be able to detect the 770 in order to connect to it, which is what the NWK actually does. Basically, the phone must be switched on first, then the keyboard. With a rewriting of some of the drivers and connectivity software, I don't see anyone using the NWK with the 770. Aside from the fact that it's a sh*te build quality. Get a Think Outside one instead!
|
My brother has a Think Outside BT keyboard. I'll try to have him send it over so I can test it with the 770 (when i get a 770).
|
Does the 770 feature an IrDA port at all? - it would get around the whole discovery issue altogether. It would also be a damn sight cheaper as well and ThinkOutside does a lovely one for half the price of the BT version.
On a seperate note, I'd also like to get my hands on the stylish albino 770 that was doing the rounds on the net not all that long ago. |
Hmm, I'm wondering if there's an IrDA port as well since the specs doesn't indicate it. I wonder if you can beam contacts/memos from phones/pda's to the Nokia 770.
I have a Think Outside IrDA keyboard. If the Nokia 770 has an IrDA port, I'll be glad to test it too. |
Hello,
The 770 will not offer IrDa connection. As far as the SU-8W it will not work for the 770. The keyboard requires both HID and GAP Bluetooth Profiles. From what I understand the 770 will only offer Generic Access, SIM Access, File Transfer, and Serial Port Profiles. |

Sorry, no albino 770. |
I'm using a Nokia SU-8W wireless keyboard with my Nokia 770...
To do this you need an applet to allow the Nokia 770 to browse for the keyboard from:
http://770.fs-security.com/keyboards.html This is an early version of such software, and there are a few niggles: the keyboard and Nokia 770 don't always manage to connect (typing '0000' on the keyboard might help it connect when they are trying to pair-- but that could just be coincidence), and typing on the keyboard is not counted as activity by the Nokia 770 when it is counting down to blanking the screen (aka screen saver). On the other hand it is pretty amazing to type emails and notes on the device using your keyboard... the onscreen keyboard will dissappear giving you the whole screen to work with. I am hoping such a feature will be included in a future release of the OS software. |
Picked up on of these last night, works great with Tomas Junnonen's plugin. I'm wondering if its possible to achieve closer integration between the keyboard and the 770, i.e., currently as far as I can tell you still have to use the hard buttons on the 770 for zooming, bringing up the menus, etc. There's certainly no shortage of buttons on the keyboard that could be mapped to such things.
Anyone have a suggestion on any easy changes that might enable additional Nokia wireless keyboard functionality? Cheers, Michael |
Michael-
I suspect we'll have to wait for a future release from Nokia to add those features, but I could be wrong. You can find the source code at the bottom here http://770.fs-security.com/keyboards.html). I looked at it, and I think I can see where it'd be possible to add additional key mappings but I (a) didn't test it and (b) don't really know my a** from a hole in the ground. Plus, I hate the screen timeout problem while you're typing. From what little I've read I think it'd be simple to implement, but can't help wonder if it was only a few lines why didn't the author do it? Regardless, I want to mess with it. What I'm really jonsing for now is support for the bluetooth HID profile, so we can use a bluetooth mouse. That would be so nice (I just got my keyboard today but I keep looking for a mouse). BTW... anyone else find bluetooth a bit unstable? If I have more than one device I find that the devices will suddenly disconnect or need to be reset before they will connect again. I'm hoping this is something that can be corrected by a future software release. |
The screen dimming I don't find all that problematic, when using the keyboard I max out the dim times, but it would be nice to not have to touch the screen. Only wish they had put some kind of locking mechanism so the Nokia keyboard could be used on one's lap.
|
Yeah, I do wish it would luck rigid - esp. for the price.
BTW, here is something to try from the developers list: http://maemo.org/pipermail/maemo-dev...er/002016.html Simply copy the file libbt.so into the 770 (do a find, it's in /var/lib/install) and while I haven't tried the key mapping part, keyboard activity will now keep the screen from dimming. Whoo hoo! I love it. Now, where is my HID support (or could we hack a mouse too??) |
Nokia wireless keyboard - QWERTZ
Hi, is there a possibility for using a german QWERTZ keyboard with the Nokia 770? It runs, but the allocation is QWERTY.
And, how can I use the Function Keys like "Mail", "Home", etc. Thank you, Flupps :) |
Where are people getting the Nokia BT KB? I have fondled the Stowaway BT KB. Ran away in horror. Stiff keys, plus the damned thing is on a center platform so it WOBBLES when I try to type on it. Baloney!
-- edited to add: From the KB FAQ: Can I also use the Nokia Wireless Keyboard with my PDA or PC? No you cannot. The Nokia Wireless Keyboard can only be used with compatible Nokia phones. http://www.nokiausa.com/nokia_access....y=7&GO=GO#faq |
Found my at the Fry's Electronics here in San Diego, in a special display of Nokia peripherals. It was the last one.
I have used it with the Treo 650 using a 3rd party (not Nokia) driver for another Bt keyboard. Mostly works, but I can't get to the numbers shared with the upper set of characters. |
I just found a place in NYC that purports to sell it. I will sashay by there shortly to see if I can fondle it -- and if it will pair and work with the 770.
I just hope they're open. The Transit Strike has felled many a business here in NYC... |
I'm very happy with my Stowaway (apart from the Opera textarea issue, but that doesn't hit my usage patterns too much) - the advantage of it over the Nokia is that it locks open - meaning it can be used on your lap etc.
Also, I don't find the keys too stiff (although I'm still getting used to the layout!) |
I'm glad you like the Stowaway, but I hate it. So it's no solution for me. Ah, if only the Zippy 610 had a BT model!!

So just how well does the SU-8W work with the 770? I'm seriously considering picking one up. Do all the keys work (function access to the number keys, etc... not including the phone specific keys of course)? Is it worth it, or is there a better choice?
|
It works very well, I have no complaints. Yes, the number keys work.
|
Pointless to ask, but I will --
Is it very flat? How its keyfeel? Do you make many typos? Still wish I could find one in NYC to fondle. -- via free 770 @ Bryant Park. |
It is very flat, the keys are smaller than normal, it doesn't lock in the middle, and it feels good if put on a hard flat surface, doesn't work well on one's lap in the car while driving. :-)
Since the keys are smaller than standard, it does take some getting used to, but at least it works well with the 770. |
I picked up a Nokia keyboard at Fry's a few days ago. I also have the Think Outside Stowaway bluetooth keyboard. They both have their pros and cons and I see myself using both.
The Stowaway locks in the middle, which is quite nice. The keys feel a little more bouncy compared to the Nokia keyboard. I like how the Nokia opens and closes; it's also more streamlined and portable than the Stowaway. The Nokia's keys feel smaller and closer together than the Stowaway. Like eskin wrote, it will take a little time to get used to. I think both are good keyboard with minor differences. |
For anybody that's still interested in this thread, I just got a Think Outside KB today (Christmas rocks), and it works entirely better than it has any right to. Numbers and other non-alphabetic characters work fine, except £, ¥ and € for some reason (they don't work on my Powerbook, either, so it's not a 770-specific issue), and even some of the function keys work, though not really how you think they should. For example, "Memo" opens the drop-down menu (which you can navigate with the arrow keys) in pretty much every application, "Apps" and "Menu" zoom in and out, respectively, in AbiWord (but not, apparently, anywhere else) and "Send" toggles full-screen mode in AbiWord (but, again, nowhere else). There's probably some other functionality that I haven't discovered yet.
I don't have a Nokia KB to compare to, but the ThinkOutside works at least as well as you'd hope. EDIT: Forgot to mention: the ThinkOutside KB also works nicely with VNC, which is fantastic. |
shonk,
Is there a specific model i should consider when purchasing the ThinkOutside keyboard? I was just wondering which model you have that works well with VNC. |
Returned the Nokia BT keyboard, bought a Think Outside Stowaway, and the only issue I've had with is the inablilty to enter numbers and symbols into large text entry forms in web pages. Single line text, like for Google, no problem, but for our Exchange server email, its a bit problematic, but I can live with it. Ergonomically, the Think Outside keyboard is much better for me, with larger keys, longer key travel, and locks into place. Also, the supplied removable stand will support the 770, while the Nokia would not. Additionally, the Think Outside keyboard has a fully supported driver for my Treo 650, while the Nokia while it worked mostly, was somewhat problematic also in web text areas.

I wish I could have tried them all but the Nokia keyboard seems fine to me - a little small, and you need to get used to it's layout, but I figure if any keyboard is going to be supported, it will the Nokia. And I'd bet the bugs are shared by all (seems to me that BT is still a bit iffy). I'd love to try others, but for now I'm happy. You could easily do worse. I'd suggest trying before you buy if you can, of course. |
The stand would work if I took the 770 out of the sleeve, otherwise, it tended to slide on the rounded edge. I really liked the Nokia keyboard, but I like the Think Outside one better and needed the Treo 650 compatibility. The real killer for me with the Nokia was that it doesn't lock into a solid unit, which mean forget about using on your lap. Pretty much a deal breaker for me, as my usage is usually sitting at an airport or waiting in my car.
|
I thought the Stowaway BT KB was messed up - but it only has a problem in web text arrays AKA multi-line textboxes. Kind of a drag, but it is a bug in either the Opera browser or the KB plugin.
|
Also, if Nokia is listening - if you all provided a sideways power adapter plug, instead of the straight-in type, I could leave the power plugged in, even sitting in the built-in Stowaway cradle.

Re: Nokia Wireless Keyboard
Does anybody know who to make the "fn" key not stay lit after pressing it? Or is this just the way the SU-8W has to be? I'm always forgetting to unclick it.
Thanks! |
