Should I get the N900? I want a mobile computer, not a phone.

Hi everyone,

Does it make sense to buy an N900 to use strictly as a mobile computer (not as a phone)?

Can I turn the cellular radio off, but still use Wi-Fi?

If I'm not going to use it as a phone, does it matter whether I get one that's "unlocked"?

Yeah N900 can be used without sim. It is an Unlocked phone AFAIK.

Definitely. You can turn off the radio and use wifi alone. It is a great mobile computer if you're familiar with linux.

I agree I've only seen unlocked ones here in the us.

Then N900 is specifically made for you ^^

How is Nokia marketing the N900 ? Is it a phone ?
It is sold as a mobile computer with the Internet in its heart, and it was introduced as 'step 4 of 5' for tech leaders / lovers. If you want a mature Nokia mobile phone with extensive Java support and full SIM features then there are plenty of choices based on Series40 and Symbian. I think Nokia has been clear on that since http://maemo.nokia.com was launched this Summer.

wifi is a type of cellular radio, so I guess you refer to something else?

I mean, I want to use wifi in coffee shops etc, but I don't want the N900 to waste energy trying to connect to cell-phone towers. Is that possible?

Yup. There's an application for that:

Sure, the UI only let you select one internet provider. If you choose wifi then it will not use 3g/gprs.

Of course, you can always disable the gprsX interface under the terminal, but it's not really necessary. ^^

Assuming portability is not a concern, wouldn't something similar to a netbook or UMPC be better than the N900.

Yes...but I wouldn't want to carry a UMPC around as people around me would take me as a nerd.

But when I take out the N900 the others would just think I'm playing with a brand new Nokia phone and that takes me to the front of pick-up line! (j/k)

I think we need a separate thread for people describe how the n900 has contributed to their success with the opposite sex.

For me, not even slightly.

I think a umpc or netbook would be a better option too, as long as it was fully supported by linux (particulary when it comes to power management).

Refrain your head from leaning forward and your mouth from opening while using N900 would help. ^^

Joking apart, N900 is way better than a netbook or UMPC in many circumstance, especially when you can reduce cumbrance by carrying one phone less.

I did just this for my first two months owning an N900. I got it as a replacement for my iPod Touch.
