Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

I much prefer Google's products. Do you think this will make it harder for Google to work its apps into Meego, or will it not matter considering Meego's openness?

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Let me break this down into internet speak.

Yahoo = failing
Nokia = failing [in smart phone sphere]
Google = winning
Apple = winning

Nokia + Yahoo = Fail central

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Same reported at intomobile: http://www.intomobile.com/2010/05/21...-services.html

Gotta agree where Yahoo is concerned-- their slow decline is no secret. So I'm surprised by this quote:

Quote:

People know Yahoo!, it’s still a viable brand, and Yahoo! does have some genuinely interesting mobile services, so this can be seen as a win for both companies
Um... no.

Oh, and the more things change, the more they stay the same:

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Not a good combo, imho. What is really going on with Nokia?

Outside of the Intel/Moblin/MeeGo decision, not much more that's been made public makes sense.

thommy 2010-05-21 14:52

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

i think this is the final straw for me. nokia's lacking maemo support, meego's immaturity, and now the integration of yahoo's services really make android appealing. we've been waiting for way too long for the maemo bugs to be stomped out and i'm afraid meego is going to be more of the same. i really hope i'm wrong, and i'll wait to see how meego performs, but if it's just as buggy and full of yahoo services, i'm going to jump ship for an android phone.

I am an engineer. So I love math equations and this I believe qualifies as a new theory!

And I agree.

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Honestly what's up with some of the people here?
Nokia is partner of Microsoft, just today made agreement with Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and VW to make provide in-car apps and greater smartphone integration tech, Nokia is doing work closely with Intel and have made agreements with Google of using it search engines in Symbian long time ago and different Google services.

These things happen every month with intel or Nokia sized company, but in somehow some people make this news negative.

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Future, blah, blah, blah.

People in future will buy what they are buying now. Most people I know are faithful to brands they choose several years ago. Even if they were *****ing about Nokia/SE/Samsung/whatever their next phone in overwhelming number of cases was of the same brand.

In developing world majority of people will buy cheap phone from A today (or get hand-me-down from family member), feature phone from A tomorrow and smarphone from A next week (if they will need it at all).

Yahoo's struggles make it negative... especially if Ovi is actually to be scrapped for their services...

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Yahoo is teaming up with them because Google is trying to seriously kill them in the TV widgets sector(Google TV). So with the Nokia partnership, Yahoo will get to keep their widgets on TVs with Meego.

What's weird though is that Intel is a Google TV partner...

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Seriously, Nokia must refresh its business model, guidelines and staff.
They seem like a car without brakes downhill.
Only with a few years of relax and SILENTLY strategy they could be the number one again. But weird friendships makes you look weird forever.
Yahoo? Very nice 90's one, until Google come to us.

This is still one incredibly uninspired move by Nokia.

Nokia Press release: http://www.nokia.com/press/press-rel...newsid=1418261

Nokia and Yahoo! to bring integrated web services to millions of consumers around the world
May 24, 2010
http://media.share.ovi.com/m1/s/2085...d918fd8c18.jpg

- Nokia will be the exclusive, global provider of Yahoo!'s maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo! properties, branded as "powered by Ovi."
- Yahoo! will become the exclusive, global provider of Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as "Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!"

that makes at least a bit more sense than earlier predictions of what was happening.

Strange that they didn't include flickr (iirc part of Yahoo). Ovi Share seems to be almost completly abandoned by Nokia.

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Commenter Oflife on the Engadget report sums this up for me:

Quote:

We have here two companies who have an appalling comprehension of human factors design. Compare any Yahoo service to Google or Apple. Also compare operating a Nokia 5800 or other phone to an LG or Apple. If these companies produce anything together, it isn't going to be pretty or usable. Or will they cancel each other out and produce a sensual prodigy?

romanianusa 2010-05-24 14:51

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

I see nothing but benefit for Nokia teaming up with Yahoo. The reason?? Now Yahoo mail actually "WORK" on N900!!! That's all i care about...nothing more!!

As for Yahoo Messenger...i can careless because i have Pidgin and it works.

So i don't understand what you people are whining about.

quipper8 2010-05-24 14:55

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

well, i do use some Yahoo services, and they are pretty well designed IMO

Flickr
Babelfish
Pipes

the yahoo webmail interface is quite nice too, actually

not sure if it is still true now, but at least as of august 2009, yahoo had more mailboxes than gmail

It's not whining. Speculation led people to think that this was a losing combination of two declining companies. While this allegiance does make quite a bit more sense; it still doesn't seem to be... well, the best option out there imho.

But, let's see what will/does happen. As it stands, my expectations will remain rather low - mainly because both companies are honestly notorious for missing the mark in some of their simpler, supposedly more intuitive offerings (an aside, I absolutely hated how Yahoo Maps had the wrong documentation notes for their AS2 and AS3 API's for 2+ years in some spots and I had to basically guess, whereas Google Maps AS3 implementation API was documented spot on) - because of their history.

This announcement makes sense. I just hope they can make it work correctly the first time. No Flickr integration is odd though.

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Flickr is already integrated on all nokia symbian phones.
todays announcement is all about web and it seems nokia are getting more out of it than yahoo.

Announcing that would have been advantageous, that's what I meant.

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

@gerbick I'm agreed with you that it's not the best pairing ever, but certainly better than nothing. Better late than never though? Probably.

Anyway, new iPhone coming out in a couple of weeks and it looks fab, plus Google are really pushing the envelope in terms of specification and features with Android. The N8 with some Yahoo widgets has got a lot of competition on it's hands and I'm glad I don't own any of those Nokia shares graphed from YoDude's post.

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Partnerships are good

-Intel for Meego
-MS$ for exchange and IM
-Yahoo for Maps and push email

Its all additive, and gets them more visibility in the US of A.

Didn't know that Yahoo mail and chat were this popular.

This is very2 good for both Nokia and Yahoo.
Such an upgrade from Nokia's rather lame original Ovi offering.

Maybe they can hook up with Geocities.com to provide personal website space for blogging?

supposedly yahoo mail has more mailboxes than gmail

In a key country for Nokia the Phillipines Yahoo seems to be massive at least the messagner and in the UK BTinternet is powered by yahoo. So they are still about in massive markets for nokia..

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Yet another post that reveals the naivety or dare I say the dullness of many. So Nokia goes to Yahoo for that which Yahoo does better than the rest and some people here think its a bad move. I loved this forum at the start but so sick of it now. Yahoo has more users than gmail and they dont violate your privacy. Well done Nokia good synergistic move.

gusch5 2010-05-24 16:46

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

Nokia and Yahoo fit nicely together. I welcome their move.
And maybe they deepen their partnership even more.

GeraldKo 2010-05-24 16:59

Re: Nokia and Yahoo Teaming Up?

I used to use Yahoo for stock quotes and research. Microsoft's finance website was actually better but they killed it. Of the free sites, Yahoo's was best. But apart from that I have dropped all things Yahoo. I have to deal with my girlfriend's Yahoo Mail (and I have some secondary Yahoo Mail accounts) and it sucks compared to GMail. Just poor interface, javascript or something that changes and makes it inoperable with tweaks I've done or Proxomitron, etc.

Really, apart from finance, what does Yahoo do better than anyone else? What does it do better than Google?

I personally like this. I think that Nokia is working in the right way. Cooperating with Yahoo, Microsoft and Intel (sevices, software and hardware), further from the good quality of Nokia products. Good Combination.

Huh? It was so obvious I didn't even bother to write about it. Nokia is great on hardware side - not so good when it is coming to web-services (especially scalability).

Good to see 2 of my favourite companies joining forces. Nokia and Yahoo are much similar, good products, little hype, highest market share, hated by the Apple, Google loving US bloggers.
