Sony Ericsson Satio or Nokia n900
 

Both seem like nice devices trying to choose between the two devices is very tough I guess more gigabytes for the money go with n900 or more megapixels go with the Satio. The Satio in my opinion has a better interface but the maemo os seams fresher and newer Meego looks like it has some potential but Symbian has the most application support of anything out there. I do like the addition of a physical keyboard on the n900 but I could easily get used to virtual one on the Satio. Tell me what you guys think.

On side note don't mean to start flame war because this is a Nokia board and Nokia and Sony Ericsson are rivals.

Symbian s60v5 is unattractive. Just choose n900.

Symbian is known to have a pretty bad interface but Sony added a bunch of eye candy and nice animations I do like how there is more apps for s60v5 but Meego might gain more developer support. I don't like the all black interface on the n900 it looks pretty opaque.

I agree.
But before choosing, take a look at other phones, not only Satio.
Remember, it is VERY IMPORTANT TO DO A SERIOUS RESEARCH BEFORE BUYING A N900, fanboy rules...

I have looked at many phones both Nokia n900 or the Sony Ericsson Satio are my final choices.

The awesome Maemo community is addition to n900. But symbian being around longer an being more popular means more hackers devoting there time to Satio.

Nokia loves future so much that never reaches it.
N900: from " the future is now (coming soon)" to "it will be available in next MeeGo device"... but we lost the "available now" step.

That is true. This people is amazing. But no one community can survive without support, and Nokia bypassed then.

Yah Nokia is a lot larger and controls 40% of market while Sony Ericsson something like 5% while they are growing and Nokia is shrinking Nokia is gigantic at the moment.

N900 for sure, just by comparing technical specs (eg hardware) except 12mp camera Satio sucks
besides Symbian is pretty much dead + SE financial issues go with N900 just remeber to ask advice and use search if you have issues..N900 sorta unpolished but awesome :D

Satio is a nice enough s60v5 device (had mine for 4 months before I got the N900)
the SE overlay theme makes for nice kinetic scrolling and gives nice, ordered links to media, shortcuts, favourite contacts/web links etc, however, at some point you end up "under the hood" and stuck with the s60 v5 interface.
the lack of kinetic scrolling in the underlying menu screens (added to the "do i need to single or double tap to open this?" dilemna) can make for a bit of frustration. At least Nokia have made efforts to get uniformity with devices like the N97 and 5800....on this front.
Touch screen keyboard on the Satio is one of the better ones and is very responsive.
I'd say if you want a nice mediacentric device with a great camera and all the usual symbian benefits (and annoying traits) without the flexibility of being able to tweak the guts out of it, the Satio isn't a bad option, but then most of the android based devices will outshine it in performance (and available apps - if that's your thing).
If you're after a device that you can tinker with and tweak and enjoy learning about (+ you get the bonus of reading all the new threads from people whining about when the next FW release will come out ;) ), with the bonus of having great, integrated connectivity options for networking, then the N900 is the choice for you....

ps: one BIG frustration with the Satio is SE's determination to stick with the proprietry connector for headphones..... and the location of the jack on the side fo the phone...

simple
If you are new to nokia then choose Satio if not then choose Nokia.

if you are new to noks then Satio will over indulge you with software from good old simbian...... however for old hats (most) simbian has had its day in the sun.

if you want to learn something then choose n900. be prepared though or else you will end up hating the fact that you ever bought it.

not because its rubbish (contrary to some bitter others) but because of what N900 represents and stands for. this is the fact that some while purchasing seems to forget.

Meego sounds cool but might end up being another failed platform and I don't see Nokia making any new maemo devices there is reason why symbian so popular and is supported by so many people because Nokia no matter refuses to ditch the os.

Also Sony fanboy for life here won't effect my purchasing decision maybe I should wait for Sony Ericsson Meego device.

rrmaster: make sure you read all the 'problem' threads on this forum.. and there's a giant thread that lists all n900 problems for potential buyers. most of them contain the solution/workarounds, but the community don't have much sympathy for users who don't take the time to 'research' the n900 beforehand for its shortcomings.

i have an n900 which i couldn't be happier with and my wife has a satio which is finally quite a solid phone after a shaky start. the camera on the satio is outstanding but symbian is a boring and outdated o.s and while the n900 has a much worse camera everything else is far better

I to have heard many more problems from users at maemo.org about the n900 saying people are switching to other devices.

Seems like the n900 would fail as a smartphone lack potrait, fm radio, and mms and the fact that maemo is very new would cause some problems.

I don't get why does everyone knock symbian for having a bad interface when really it is what you find on almost any device press menu then you have options of where you want to go.

Maybe I will buy them both lawl but I would consider either one of them a beast sun on same processor and graphics chip.

these threads are so dumb, why do people ask these questions on a pro-Maemo board?
its like asking on a mac forum should i get a mac book pro or a HP Pavilion, the answers are going to reflect those of the user base of the forum. you need to research it yourself and make your own decision

I would say the n900 is more justified to be called a mobile computer than previous n-series devices but the n900 has hardware already found in many devices the software makes it a mobile computer but still feels like a android device.

When you've already made up your mind about Satio, why this discussion.

N900 users will tell you how superior it is as compared to other devices but you wont accept. You need to have N900 to know what it is capable of.

Actually, device choice is subjective. Frame the features you're looking for and then compare both devices and select what best suites you.

Friend bought it and returned it 2 days after and bought a N900.

i'll help you make your decision by telling you how UK carriers pulled the plug on the SE satio b/c SE did a terrible job with the firmware
carriers were getting too many returns and complaints over it.
if you research what your thinking of buying this would of come up

On one hand the Satio looks a better choice because of more established os on the other hand I could miss something really great if I don't get the n900. Ahh so hard to choose.

my gf has the satio, its only redeeming feature is the camera, the UI is worse than the normal symbian s60v5. Sony have manipulated it to be less customizable and its kind of pain to use.
I won't bother going into the pros and cons of the n900 because its all around this forum.
In the end of the day my gf would admit the n900 is better (she likes to have the best of everything so it says allot for the n900 for her to admit this) and the satio is so lame that she lost it around the house and instead of finding it she just started using her old phone.
Another thing I would like to add to this is that every week I find a new reason to love this phone, she go bored with her phone after one day and that's no word of a lie.
Even if you don't buy the n900, DON'T BUY THE SATIO it will be one heck of a mistake.
