Maemo 5 PR1.2: What's new? What's different?
 

now that the all singing and dancing pr 1.2 is out

i just have one question about the new pr 1.2
are there any power saving upgrades or will we
suffer with faster battery drainage due to
new added features?

I think improved battery life was mentioned somewhere with regards o pr1.2.
But i guess we'll just have to wait and see if there is any noticable differance.

And then wait for couple of days and try to spot if there is some problems that might be blockers for you (for example icq protocol seems to have some problems right now) And THEN update it and experience it.

now that pr 1.2 is out i am not so impressed. I don't know why but reading all the threads about pr 1.2 and everything made me hope that it is going to be awesome but it's not even close: the phone is not responsive sometimes like before the update...lack of video and conference call(not on skype)...and alot more things which we all need and used to play with on the older phones...

It´s true that depending on how many programs you run (email checking, IM-protocols connecting, Real windowses open) it might get laggy. And also there is some apps than basically are not on level of smoothness what iPhone delivers.

Could someone please tell me what is this video call outside Skype. I have never ever used it but some people have been talking about it. Isn't it something that is dependend on your service provider or what is this thing and what protocols it uses and what phoens have it. I have never ever seen or used it besides skype and gtalk.

It lacks tons of functionality on Phone apps and PIM, but then again it´s all about browsing, messaging (except email), music & video. Only hope is that there will be commercial apps that provide phone functions what people are missing.

Then again if yout try to use it same way as your old phones you have probably bought wrong device.

i just have a couple of questions cause i'm such a noob, my conversations inbox widget is no where to be found, and ovi store is still the same, or is that as it should be? sorry for the noobish question but i'm a tad confused, i thought we would be getting a whole new world of content on ovi

Granted there are still some basic features missing on the n900 that are available on other phones like MMS, but PR1.2 has made some improvements. I can't comment on the speed and performance because i've reflashed my phone and plan on starting from scratch, so the phone is obviously performing really good.
However, the USSD commands are working now and have long been a sought-after feature. Also, I'm really enjoying the new ovi maps, just feels better. It got a lock in less than 10 seconds while i was indoors.
What else... QT4.6 pre installed, which is supposed to be big news as i've gathered from the many threads here (i've personally haven't benefited from this yet but there's a first time for everything :D)
The virtual keyboard looks and works great, and weirdly enough, after the update i can now access the full facebook website rather than the mobile version (which was a problem that arose to all n900 users a couple of days ago if i'm not mistaken). Another welcomed feature is the share option from the file manager. This allows you to share files directly from the manager via bluetooth, email, and other services.
I still haven't tried out the camera to see if there are any changes, but settings-wise, they've added more resolutions to both image and video capture as well as night mode for the two.
People also say that the email client has also improved, but i haven't tried that myself either.
Just try it out, give it some time, and i'm sure you'll start noticing and maybe appreciating the changes, as subtle as they may be.

Upgraded my French N900 to PR1.2 using Linux Flasher. Everything went well and all apps are now back. Couple of things that I couldn't get working:

- How do you get video for Skype or GoogleTalk calls to work? I don't see the option.
- "SMS only shows for mobile phone numbers". I still get SMS option for all numbers.

What is your experience?

Great news for N900 users… there’s a new software update available for you to download! (UK release today, and global release tomorrow Wednesday, May 26) .
There’s a number of changes that you can expect:


Loads of new games and apps in the Ovi Store
Gaming fans can now get their hands on all sorts of new titles including Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster, Zen-bound, Angry Birds (level pack), Sygic, Kroll, Weatherbug and GoGadget. Bear in mind that these games won’t show up in the Ovi Store until you have upgraded to PR 1.2.



It’s one for the socialites among you
Facebook IM Chat is now bundled in, and the updated email service allows you to accept or decline event invitations right from your inbox. And what do you think of video calling, allowing users face-to-face chatting anywhere.


A freshened Ovi Maps interface
This updated UI should make it easier for you to find your way around, and there’s also a change to the menu system UI, with the first level now customisable…
On top of all that, your N900 can now browse the web in portrait mode and make video calls.

you need a recent skype client on the other end & the contact must be online (and possibly also with a cam) and have video calling enabled in their client.

SMS to landlines is an optional setting in contacts

moving on- my virtual keyboard is very strange- is this now the standard? if so it is pants. i have carbon theme enabled - would that be anything to do with it?

battery life and general operational speed seem slightly improved but my media player widget still has a broken play button

PORTRAIT MODE IN ALMOST ANY APP!!!

To enable it, press CTRL + SHIFT + R, close the keypad and then turn the device!

Notice that you need to do this on every app you want portrait mode on, and *remember* not all the apps are ready for this!!! (media player, calendar or calculator don't adjust properly, however email and sms conversations DO ADJUST!!!)


More things:

-Volume control while browsing

-Video calls on gtalk and skype

-Email widget

*Many bugfixes:

-Media player now plays videos through UPNP

-Media player doesn't skip while browsing or multitasking

-The conversation screen does not take ages to start now

And a huge performance improvement over the last PR1.1

I might forget some things though ;)

Hmmm..Hmmmmm. How about if you first try to enable default themes and then come here to report if keyboard UI is still broken ONLY on your system.

Worked for me. Did it on my pyPianobar app because I know it has no portrait mode code in it.

It went portrait... and boy does it look fugging ******ed!!!! ROFL!

I knew that would happen.

you can now use wired headphones for sound and a bluetooth headset as a remote again this was killed after 1.0 .
you can also adjust the volume when you are at the slide to unlock screen i think this was broken (or only on my device :) )

The difference between the leaked PR1.2 and the official is really only STABILITY.

I'm tired of hearing uninformed noobs complaining about how there was no change between the leaked and official versions... how different did you think it was going to be? It's the same firmware.

When in app manager I can't search for apps. Previosuley one could also decide to sort apps by name or size. Now I can't. Is it everywhere or just my phone?

I can't wait!! As soon as I seen that it was out at work I was excited to get home!! Angry birds is limited, can't wait to get the full game on Thursday, I will be on there for hours.

So many great updates also there, and it's going to give a whole new lease of life to the N900... cheers Nokia!!

It's just a bunch of bug fixes plus a few new features.

Still, it is nice to have it. :P

You can adjust the volume even with the screen locked.
