Video Calls with Skype N900

Really stupid question but.. how do you make a video call with Skype on PR1.2? :)

mece 2010-05-25 11:49

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

in a contact with skype, click skype video call instead of skype call

teh 2010-05-25 11:52

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

Hmm I don't have that option...

Pigro 2010-05-25 11:53

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

go online (via control panel) and then select a contact for whom you have skype contact details. Scroll down to bottom of contact options - "skype call" will be shown as usual. "Skype Video call" should now also be an option, right underneath.

I don't have this option =( although I can receive video call and then enable video

Edit:
Ok, I just restarted the phone and now I have video call button =)

You can only start a video call with users who have this option enabled in their account.

Nothing there for me :(

Edit: In other words they need to have a webcam plugged in?

well there is something fishy with that. All my skype contacts have skype call and skype IM options. And now all have Skype call, Skype IM and Skype Video Call. That contact is not a regular skype contact as far as I can tell.

Rebooted. Still no option. Would restoring a backup have changed some config files?

That is a skype contact pulled from my skype account.

ok what kind of client is that contact using? and is he/she online and not invisible and set to recieve video calls and such. Apparently that stuff matters. Offline contacts look like that for me.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

The contact is using the latest version of skype and is online but, they don't have a webcam.

I will do some proper testing with my house mate when I get home

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

what happens if they send you a skype im? since that doesn't seem to be supported either... weird stuff. You should still be able to send video. There might be some security settings on the other parts skype that interferes also.

here's a video of skype video calling (over my own internal LAN on wifi) - quality is much better than I expected - though it's probably not that easy to see on my recording :-(

Well this at least looks positive and it appears they solved the problem with the front facing camera. I was a bit worried they would get Skype working, but that the front facing camera would still be rubbish.

like I say, it's actually excellent over my LAN - but Iwas standing in front of my 12 foot x 10 foot bay window on a sunny day, the front cam still needs lots of light or it's pants

Can anyone confirm whether it's possible to make a video call to a contact who doesn't have a webcam?

i.e. my contact sees me on their PC, but I just hear voice...?

markcub 2010-05-25 13:42

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I think I have the same issue as spanner.

I cannot see the option to make a Skype video call in my contacts, or an option to turn on video during a Skype call.

I am calling people who don't have a webcam. I thought I would still be able to send video, even if they can't send their own.

I've checked the settings in the receiver's desktop Skype, and it is set to "Automatically receive video from people in my contacts list", and I am in the contacts list.

It will be a real shame if this only works if the other person has a web cam.

Cheers,
Mark.

I had the same problem with the "Skype Video Call" button not being shown in my contacts.

I managed to get it to show by simply disabling the Skype account and then going back in to the options an enabling it again.

Hmm, I already tried that. I'll give it a go once more...

Just to confirm - I actually disabled the skype account (whilst my other accounts were still online), waited for a bit, and then re-enabled it. I didn't just set my status to offline/online.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I really like that they decided to include video calling in this release however I am disappointed that you can't rotate the camera and hold the phone in portrait mode just like you would with a voice call.

Or has anyone found a way to do this?

asidana 2010-05-25 15:35

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I can confirm that if contact is using official skype client you can see video call option on your contact

I tried it with my girlfriend, there is no option to video call so I asked her to video call me and it worked.

Hello guys,

I tried disabling my Skype account, even deleting and recreating my account, and still no video call option. I've also tried on both WiFi and 3/3.5G, and still no luck.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Mark.

Both users have to have a webcam for it to work i had the leaked version and thats how it worked and it only works from n900 to pc or n900 to n900

That's what I feared :-(

Such a shame, I wonder why that decision was made?

This is wrong information.

We have tested video call between Nokia E71 Running Fring skype and N900 Running LPR1.2 last week ... over 3G network.

What did not work was N900 to MacOSX Snow Leopard running whatever latest version of Skype. 2 Way video did not establish. :(

You made me jump there.. could it be so simple?

No, I'm afraid not. The setting was already on, and toggling it made no difference.

Cheers,
Mark.

+1 on the no go with mac.

I have figured out how to turn on video, but I have to call on Skype first either from N900 or PC, also, now that I have called my self with video the button for it appears. For me it appears to be you need to have a webcam, and that person has to call you first for it to realise you can video call them.

Another thing to note, I had to reboot my device for skype to sign in again as the annoying internet bug still remains (where you can't connect to the internet or skype on Wifi or GPRS/3G without doing a reboot)

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I just tried different versions of skype (2.1 on Linux, 2.5, 3.8 and 4.2 on Windows) and video call was working only with version 4.2 on Windows.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I get the skype video call button, but am unable to actually connect a video call, all that connects is audio. the 'real' skype client just doesn't get any video from the n900 and doesn't seem to think the device can receive video.
weirdly the contact details do show that the contact support video, but also that it's from amobile device.
any ideas? I was really looking forward to this feature and it just isn't working for me.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

Hi guys,

I finally found a contact where the Skype video button appeared. He does have a web cam.

So it looks like you can only make an out-going Skype video call if the other person has a web cam plugged in.

That is a pitty, I don't see what is wrong with send-only video calls.

Oh well,
Mark.

I just had a pretty long video call with Moscow -- I'm in California. Quality was surprisingly good -- the video was better than the sound. My friends the twins were looking good.
