Updating using flasher

Will updating using the flasher erase all applications on my device?

And do I have to flash both the eMMC and the firmware or can I just flash the firmware?

mornage 2010-05-25 17:28

Re: Updating using flasher

Using the flasher will erase all applications so if you want to keep them, back up.

You only have to flash the firmware.

Is the only way to keep my data without backing up is to update from the app manager?

Re: Updating using flasher

Either way DO a backup

Yes :).

I just finished upgrading mine using the flasher.

Application -> Gone
Wifi Settings-> Gone
Contacts & My Docs-> Gone...just kidding, it stays

Re: Updating using flasher

I already did a backup but my connection here (512kb) is too slow so reinstalling all the apps will be a hassle

After You flashed the device, flash the eMMC = "factory reset"... :)

Re: Updating using flasher

But note the warnings about rebooting between PR and the EMMC. I think you remove the -R switch at the end of the Flasher command? Make sure you read all the documentation start to finish before doing anything...

Re: Updating using flasher

Having trouble getting this working. I have the device in 'flasher mode', but it appears my computer is not detecting it. The flasher is still waiting for a device to connect.

I'm on win7 64bit. I booted in 'do not force signed drivers' since they said that might be a problem.

Re: Updating using flasher

Dont bother :( it wont work with Windows 7 I've tried both 32 and 64 bit...gonna try XP 32bit

mornage 2010-05-25 18:20

Re: Updating using flasher

I flashed mine with Windows 7 32 bit. Didn't have any problems apart from having to put the final R in uppercase.

HellFlyer 2010-05-25 18:21

Re: Updating using flasher

How did you do that? I've tried but it simply fails to install USB driver

natmaster 2010-05-25 18:32

Re: Updating using flasher

Well VirtualPC worked. I already had it set up for the map loader, so off I go!

AndrewG 2010-05-25 18:33

Re: Updating using flasher

Worked on my w7 too, and about removing -R at the end, this stops the reboot?

I still dont get it. Wiki warns that after flashing fiasco do not turn on the device but if the cable is connected and it reboots automatically what i need to do to get eMMC installed as well?

when to add -R ?

You did exactly what You're NOT supposed to do... :)

When flashing the "fiasco" image remove -R, then later when flashing the eMMC (if You want to do that - again READ! - It will remove everything from "MyDocs"), do as described (don't remove the -R this time).

-R means reboot and when flashing with both images You don't want a reboot after the first flash but only after the second flash. It's all right there in the instructions... ;)

Linux example:
Code:

sudo flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f
sudo flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f -

Windows example:
Code:

flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f -

@DrWilkin

What <firmware-image> would you advise for flashing the kernel from http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-d...downloads.php?

OK thanks a lot gonna do this now!

Latest and Greatest :) The ones mentioned in my post with the "example" commands (that's PR1.2 and latest eMMC image)... ;)

I just wrote "example" so when somebody looks at this in half a year (when we've got 1.3... if we get it that is :D ), they will also be usable there... ;)

Is the PR 1.2 flash update as legit as the actual update released in the NSU?

Same thing... ;) It's downloaded directly from Nokia... :)

In the USA here. Will the PR1.2 update (for USA) be automatic? Tomorrow, right?

Or did I misunderstand?

Should be the same as last update, i.e. through AppManager -> Update... :) And yes, tomorrow.

Re: Updating using flasher

i believe flashing to PR1.2 using the maemo flasher automatically cleans up the eMMC.

i only have 700mb of space on my 2GB app memory.

when i reflash to the PR1.2 using my windows 7 (XP mode) my app memory turns out at 1.6GB

DrWilken 2010-05-25 22:01

Re: Updating using flasher

AFAIK You'll have to flash both using the "combined" image AND the eMMC image to "clean up" (wipe) the eMMC...

EDIT -> You might be right -> https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7432

It's listed on this PR1.2 wiki page -> http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo_5/PR1.2

Re: Updating using flasher

My step by step on how to Flash the N900 on windows XP SP3+
This will format the whole phone so everything will be lost unless you back it up.
Formats eMMC images and flashes the phone to 1.2 Global Release.

1. Downloaded (http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php)
• flasher-3.5.exe
(http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-d....5_2.5.2.2.exe)
• RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
(http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N...ED_MR0_ARM.bin)
• RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin
(http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N...MC_MR0_ARM.bin)

2. I installed the "flasher-3.5.exe"
3. I then moved
"RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin"
"RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin"
To the directory where I installed the flasher (Default is C:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5).
4. I then done a full backup of my N900 using the backup tool on the phone and moved all my stuff on to the memory card.
5. Ensure the battery is at least half full.
6. Unplug charger cable and switch off the device.
7. Open the Command Prompt (Start then Run or Windows Logo key + R) and type "cmd" then press Enter (this will open a black window).
8. Change the directory to the Flasher's path by typing in "cd "%ProgramFiles%\maemo\flasher-3.5"
9. Hold the u key on the device keyboard and connect the USB cable at the same time.
10. Run the following command by typing:
"flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f"

After this completes

11. Run the following command by typing:
"flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R"

The flash will take around 1 minute after which the device will reboot.
The bright Nokia screen will come up on the screen with the USB icon on the top right followed by progression dots with yellow LED blinking for a few seconds
And you’re done. Welcome to the world on 1.2

Here is my step by step.
This was the 1st time i flashed my phone. only took me about 5mins in total after i had downloaded all the things i needed.

and using copy and past (in CMD bit u can have right click to copy)

Hope this helps

Re: Updating using flasher

Hey everyone. I'm trying to flash my phone but i'm having trouble executing the commands. After entering the 2nd command (with the .bin file) Windows(XP SP3) tells me that I can either Open With or cancel. I didn't expect this but I tried it anyway and I opened the .bin with maemo flasher. A 2nd command window pops up for a split second and disappears, leaves me back at square one without doing anything to the phone.
And yes, this is an old thread but i figure here rather than a new thread.
