Facebook Chat and PR1.2... how to login?
 

Hi.

I love Facebook chat and I see it is now built in but it needs a username to put before @chat.facebook.com

I did a little research and I found it requires your Facebook username, which I found from the main account settings.

I have put it in but it says it is wrong username or password.

Any ideas, or has anyone successfully set it up, and how?

I had facebook chat working before using jabber, but since the upgrade it doesn't work.... grrrr

Hi Paul,

I almost raised my own post about this, and just before I pressed the 'post' button, it started working.

If you retrieve your Facebook 'username' from the 'Account' -> 'Account Settings' menu at the top right hand side of facebook.com. Note that this isn't the same as the username you use to sign on to facebook.com.

It could be a number, or a name that you changed it to (mine is a name).

I put the username in the Facebook IM account on my N900 as 'myusername@chat.facebook.com', and used my normal Facebook password.

This didn't work quite a few times, but all of a sudden it did. Keep at it.

If you have a number username, it is probably usernumber@chat.facebook.com. However, I did notice that when I look at my Facebook contacts on the N900, they all appear to be prefixed with a hyphen, so it could be that if the Facebook username is a number, it could be '-yournumber@chat.facebook.com' (for example '-123456789@chat.facebook.com').

I didn't have to change any other settings, just the username and password, and I had to give it a few goes.

OK.

I had to change my username, log out of Facebook on the web, and then log back in.

Then it worked on the N900.

i tried this and it says incorrect username or password but they are correct because it is working on the web..

Are you using the Facebook internal username, or the username you use to sign on to facebook.com? You need to use the 'internal' username, not your sign on username, see my post above.

it is not working:(...moreover i tried to set up a username but is still not working:(. .. Did guys see that there is missing yahoo?? you can't setup a yahoo account...

I can understand your frustration. It took ages to accept my username@chat.facebook.com, but it just started working. I don't know if it is a Facebook chat server issue, or a bug in the N900 code.

what?! there is a facebook chat? so that's why my FB account (pidgin and from extras-testing) always has an encryption failed.

I got it working fine, but now how do I merge all the duplicate contacts? Hermes doesnt seem to do it.

So, if you use Facebook chat, you'll get every single friend from FB as a new contact?
Lets say i merge 1/2 of them, and i don't want the other half. What happens if you delete them? Are they going to reappear when you sign in next time? Are they going to be deleted from FB friend list?

i managed to get it to work. I installed extra protocols plugins for conversations and contacts 0.8 from the repos....

Not sure... I've just left them in. After all, I can search by typing for contacts so never too far from the contact I need and it's not like the N900 is lacking space!

if you're having trouble logging into fb after assigning yourself an fb username, do what TheMathMan said and logout/login to fb on the web, it worked immediately after doing this. contact merging is sadly manual.

changed my FB username to leetut73
signed in, signed out on pc
set n900 to, username: leetut73@chat.facebook.com
not working
says username or password incorrect?
does anyone have a fix for this yet, apart from pidgin?

now it works?
hope this dont happen everytime i reboot phone!:confused:

ovi keeps going off now, every 30secs i get 'unable to connect to 1 or more accounts' banner
its the ovimail account thats doing it
typical that a nokia account is not working properly on a nokia device!
oh well ill remove that one, it was a peice of crap anyway, i dont even know anyone with an ovi im account anyway, their loss:)

@ Leetut.

Once you've logged out and in again, try clicking on your profile and you should have a URL like so:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/paulgarner1981

Where the last bit is your username. Until the URL had switched to display the username it wasn't working.

The facebook chat server take time when the username is created.. so I think we need to be paitent while creating the Chat Account on N900. This is really a nice feature as I am able to use the same ..

To create the username we have to log in via browser to Facebook and then we have to go to Account Setting it is in the right hand corner ..

ok, i got the chat finally working. now facebook put all my friends from facebook to my contacts, which is like trillions... and if i try to remove them from my contacts it says "deleting this contact will also remove it from facebook". wtf.. now i cant find the people who matter from random ppl i might know ^^ aaaargh

Didn't work at first, I already had my username set up.

After log out it worked. :) Seems to be the thing to do.

I used it as soon as my device was updated. I had also been using the Jabber work around before. Can't see why it hasn't worked for some people, most likely to be a facebook server outage or a sudden serge of users!!

At least you only appear to have to do it once, rather than every time you reconnected with the Extra Protocols implementation...

You can get around this by disabling facebook chat via the account tab in 'Conversations' when not using fb chat, this removes all facebook contacts, once re-enabled it then re adds them.

Saw that too and immediately turned off FB chat in fear that now my MFE Gmail sync would pick all of them up and dump them into my Google address book. Fortunately it didn't and turning FB Chat off removed them all. I wonder though if I had left them in what would have happened?

Anyone get gmail (using the MFE settings) address book corrupted by FB users coming over from FB Chat?

what r u guys talking abt? what u mean by facebook chat? cuz i've been able to chat in facebook since PR 1.1 w conversations... what u mean by facebook chat is another app or something like that?

Here here CYPHERC, I am wondering the same because like you, I've also been able to do chat in facebook since PR 1.1 via the Conversations app.

I too wait to find out more specifics about this so-called facebook chat thing...

Does the Facebook Migrator app in Extras testing work to merge the FB contacts once they are pulled in when logged in to FB chat using the stock PR1.2 FB chat account?

Prior to PR 1.2, Facebook chat was set up through either pidgin or jabber. With Pr 1.2, Facebook is now a direct option like Gtalk, skype and ovi.

EDIT: I wonder if this will allow contact info syncing like Hermes.
