How to Skype Video call?
 

Hi All,

I've searched but with no luck. Since the PR1.2 video, how do I make a Skype Video Call, I can't see the opiton on my Skype contacts.

If there is no option, just call them regularly (via skype) and select ’video call’ from the toolbar menu when when the connection is established.

HI,

We can make Skype video call with the following :

0) PC should have a Skype client which has version greater than or equal to 4.2.

1) Device to Device is possible.

If any contact supports Video calling facility, then an option to initiate direct Video call from the Contacts/Recent call list should be possible.

Its working fine for me :)


Try the above, if not possible, please reply back.

Hey guys,

I'm having the same issue.

There is no option to initiate a video call from the contact screen or from the toolbar once a call is in progress.

Am I doing something wrong?

Had the same problem until I updated the skype software on my pc. Now it works fine.

Other person has to be logged in, in addition to having Skype video capability.

Try restarting your phone. Somehow, after you install pr1.2 Video Call is not there even if your person is online. Restarting the phone gave me the option to do video calls

Could someone provide a little more instruction? I've just tried and didn't see anything obvious to start a video call.

You press on your online skype contact and where there is a selection to do Skype call or Skype Chat- there is Skype Video Call Button.

I've never seen that option and I've rebooted several times after updating the firmware to this mornings one :-(

EDIT: Although it may just be that the online contact I tried it with doesn't accept video calling or has an old version of Skype

EDIT: Ok, for me it's a pc client problem. I have just video-called another friend with an updated skype program

The problem seems to be that many people dont have the latest version on the pc, download the latest.

I have tried. MY N900 gives me the option to make a video call and I can see my image in the screen, but no video back from them and no video is seen by them.

I tried it over WiFi, directly hooked to a LAN and a Verizon wireless card on the Mac. No video to or from the N900. Also had the N900 connected via WiFi and through T-Mobile and a full 3.5G signal. To verify it was working on the Mac, I did a Skype call to a PC (with no camera) and it worked. Next I'll hook a camera up to the PC.

Still playing with the Mac version, but right now I'm not having much luck.

It didn't work with skype 4.1.~ on the pc, i just upgraded to 4.2.~ and now it works. very nice.
guess it's just skype's proprietary p.o.s. protocol. I don't trust them at all.

i updated the skype on my mac and is not working :( guess i made a bad choice n900 w mac :'( it sux!!!!!!! next time i'll get the iphone lol

If you would like to give your video from n900 to the skype person (I will need to assume the other party is using skype 4.2).

If the other party does not have a webcam enabled -> there is a possibility that your n900 skype will not have the video option enabled.

So I use this trick to make it work.

Option 1
1. Ask the other party to use "screen sharing"
2. Right click on your skypename -> Share Your Screen -> Share Selection
3. Click on Start Sharing.

4. Then your n900 will ring -> Pick up the phone
and you will see the camera option will "appears" on your n900,
5. Click on the camera to send your video to your friend
6. Stop Screen sharing (from your friend)

then you will be able to send video from your n900 to your friend.

Option 2:
1. Establish a skype call to the person (a normal skype call)
2. Ask your Friend to use the screen sharing
Right click on your skypename -> Share Your Screen -> Share Selection
3. Click on Start Sharing.
4. Your N900 screen will change to allow video call.
5. start the camera on your n900
6. stop the sharing


PS: DO NOT try to use share "your screen -> Full Screen" option because the call will be aborted.

well unfortunatly skype video call does not work with MAC skype client. because of compatibility issue.

Let all exchange phone numbers and do this Skype Video test drive, just to see how it works. :)

Then we'll know for sure if N900 to N900 video works! hehe

So Swirnoff and I just tried an N900 to N900 video call over WLAN and it was working pretty impressively. I tried switching my connection to the UK T-Mobile 3.5G service and it wouldn't work at all on video, plus gave very choppy results on voice only. Looks like T-Mobile are throttling Skype services over here in the UK, so no chance of making cellular Skype video calls out in the wild for me, sigh.

My wife is on Virgin mobile and has successfully made Fring video calls over cellular on her 5800. I was pretty sure that Virgin was on the back of T-Mobile here anyway. Must have got that wrong.

I tried calling over 'three' network here in the UK to the windows client. And it worked quite well.

I made a skype call with GPRS connection, the quality wasn't that bad, they could hear me and I could hear them and so on. I also tried the video call, but they couldn't see me, I guess the connection isn't that good/powerfull to manage a video call, but it did ( IMHO ) pretty good on GPRS. :D

Just completed a Skype call with video on N900, thanks to new firmware update! Quality is exactly what would be expected. It is totally functional and was made over a 3G connection. Good stuff.
