Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

Hello guys,

I can't update my N900 through Nokia Software Updater, neither OTA!

Made a back up through pc suite, all went well!

But when I tried to update with NSU, it stopped at 33.6 MB.

I'm a Vodafone customer. Could it have something to do with it? I heard Vodafone can delay updates, or something?

I hope someone has the answer, pre-thanks a lot!

Switch to Tablet mode use WiFi and try OTA .

Hey! Mine stops at 33.6 mb too! Weird.

I'm in Denmark, so it can't be a Vodafone thing, we don't have Vodafone in Denmark.

If you have wifi connection, restart your device then you can update via FOTA:D

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

Thanks for the replies!

No, it is probably not a Vodafone-issue!

I posted some more threads about my previous problem: my app manager does not work anymore. 'No applications vailable' : that's why I want to update my phone with pc!

And I will, I think we have to be patient: Nokia servers are running and rinning.

I'm gonna give it a try in about.. 2 hours!

Wish me luck!

MOC, shall we wait together? (=

Tablet mode?
FOTA?

It nice that you try to help, but I'd say that's kind of fuzzy explained.

I have the exact same issue. OTA says I need to use NSU, and that one stops at 33.6 MB.

So what is "tablet mode"?'
What is FOTA?
f*cked over the air?

What do you mean by removed everything from your device? Uninstalled all apps? I'm not sure, but I don't think I have too little rootfs.
How much do I need?

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

@Tymo I guess so. :)

@Derdiyok When u say "everything" is that aaaalll the apps?

Larswad 2010-05-26 16:28

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

Look, I don't want an over the air update. I want a clean update, which I though that the Nokia Software Updater did. (A reflash).
So, would someone explain what the hell is going on. Why can't I update using the Nokia Software updater as it stops every time at 33.6 MB.
Seriously, how hard can this be.

EDIT: Nokia Software Updater is the main single purpose application intended for upgrading the Nokia N900 and that one fails every time. If that is because the user first has to clean up his apps, then talk about epic fail!

Same Problem this morning in Italy. No OTA option available. After uninstalling a lot of programs it appeared...

Are you being ironic? If so, then maybe you could share your tremendous expertise exactly on what the user should do and expect to get a clean upgrade of the 1.2 firmware.
And I prefer not using any command line flashers or strange workaround procedures. This should work using nokia's main upgrade software intended for any customer.

same problem here

stops at 33.6 and I live in Denmark too, but I don't think that has to do with anything. Gonna take me a loong time to uninstall all apps. Stupid nokia

Hey, in such case, don't forget to do the backup BEFORE uninstalling the apps. Otherwise you won't be able to use the backup utility to restore them.

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

just uninstall some games like Tuxrace, Brainparty, Gltron or Openarena, it seems one or maybe many of them make problems for OTA update

Larswad 2010-05-26 17:25

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

But it still puzzles me. From what I understood the Nokia Software Updater should not rely on what is currently on the device, but reflash the full operating system, right? And by that I DON'T mean the MyDocs folder and stuff because that's in a different flash.

It shouldn't matter if one got 1 byte left of rootfs or any strange apps, it should replace the god damned thing (ok, being drastic, but you know what I mean).

omikron 2010-05-26 17:28

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

I tried updating from the app manager but before i can install the update it says it has to be done using the NSU on the computer but that fails..

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

I had the same problem, just remove all applications larger than 1mb (or just all except Maemo 5 ofcourse ;) ) and it works, it's updating now.

Still thinks it's a flaw in Nokia's software it doesn't mention you need more memory on the device.

Good luck all, and have fun with your N900!

The same to you (Good luck and have fun!). And I say the same, this should work regardless of what installed on the device. Pisses me off.

Good to see there are more people with this problem!

I hope it wil be solved soon!

Thanks, the same wishes to you! Good it worked out for you :)

I can't delete my apps through the app manager, there must be a way to delete them through xterminal, right?

Ok, sorry then if I jumped you Tymo!

BTW, I have soon uninstalled nearly everything now, I have over 70MB of rootfs and still no go with the Nokia Software Updater.
This is just so lame. I am a software developer myself since over 20 years back, and rarely I've seen such badly tested, documented and supported device upgrade software like this.

Not onlt that, the NSU PC app. doesn't work either. It stops at 33.6 MB every time with a message that appears to be quite unrelated.

It's okay, Lars! :)

How weird, how sad, hearing someone saying that, someone who has 20 years of expertise. Wow. I still hope for a solution.
I'm gonna give it a try again! I'll keep you up to date!

People, I would say: spread the word! Let them know!
If we all talk about it, it will be noticed faster :)

This has to be solved. And it will!

If you guys read around you will see that it should be enough to disable some repos as, for instance, extras-devel...

^ disabling them gave me around 6mb but not enough. Got to around 52mb and it's still not enough. Will try some uninstalling...

Re: Not able to update OTA neither with NSU!

I uninstalled following programs and it worked, updated over the air.
bounce, firefox, battle gweld, candle, coin toss, mplayer, kmplayer, qtirreco, solarwolf, xchat irc client, teeworlds, rockdodger, tecnoballz, almostti graphing calc emulator.
apt-get clean and autoremove. Around 57mb on rootfs and it worked.
Cheers
