N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
Hey guys,
I just signed up at maemo for this issue. I got my N900 last Monday, last night I saw the PR 1.2 update and thought to myself great, just in time =D So I updated the phone (I updated from the pc, not OTA so I am pretty sure this isnt the rootfs issue) and used it for a couple of hours, I put the tablet to offline mode and went to bed, when I woke up in the morning the tablet was switched off, so I tried to boot it, the first boot gave me the Nokia logo with the backlight on, it vibrated, beeped once and then shutdown with a white light on the LED. I tried starting it up again but the same thing happened except this time there was no beep. I used up a lot of time reconfiguring the phone last night after the update and didnt back it up, do I have any other option than reflashing the phone again? I have already transferred all my stuff from the memory card to the phone (pics, vids etc) too :/ |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
sounds like you will have to do that one thing you dont want to.. sorry mate.
edit: i know it will sounds stupid but check your battery it might not be as full as you think. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
damn that sucks, I shouldnt have moved the images from the card to the phone :/, is there anyway to back it up using update mode and then reflash it?
EDIT: I had set an alarm before going to bed, the alarm just rang and it asked if I wanted to switch the device on, I said yes but same problem :/ |

sounds more like battery issue. remove battery and put it back and then try starting...otherwise put on charge for atleast 10 mins and try again. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
try to recharge. i had the same problem
|
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
hmm ok, I will try that, it is pretty weird because I had a 71% charge before going to bed, thanks for the tips, I will report back when I try it out.

Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
Update: This worked, thanks for the help guys. I am just wondering how the charge could drop from 71% to 0% when in offline mode and the screen turned off within 8 hours. Any ideas?

Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
A broken app from extras-devel maybe?
|
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
I only have the following apps,
1. Wifi switcher 2. 3g/2g/dual mode 3. fMMS 4. rootsh 5. Battery Graph 6. FM Boost Are any of these apps unstable? |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
The charge could easily drop from 71% to 0 if the 71% was inaccurate, and those numbers are notoriously inaccurate. I wouldn't worry about it much, just keep your eyes open.

Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
hmm ok, I had charged the phone on the same day, it finished at about 3pm, I updated the firmware at around 7pm and then used wifi to get all these apps, maybe around 20 mins. Put it on offline at 2am and at 11 am in the morning battery was dead, before going to bed it showed 71%. Nothing else was done, so I am assuming the percentage was accurate. Any views?

Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
Ok I just went through battery graph and noted that just around the time I was going to bed the CPU usage went whacko and it was using 100% CPU till the battery died at about 8am. As we speak the CPU is being used, 50%. The battery will just die a few hours after the phone finishes charging again.
I will get a dump of the top command and post it here. |

Here is a dump of top,
The process "/usr/bin/Xorg -logfile /tmp/Xorg.0.log" keeps spiking. Can having too many shortcuts on the desktop cause this? I have only one desktop running with 8 shortcuts (contacts, web, email etc). |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
I am seeing another issue, the phone has been charging for the last two hours, an hour back the battery percentage was 77% and 1009 mAh. After another hour the stats shown are similar and it is still charging.

Don't trust it sometimes it goes from example 70% and later it shows 80%. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
Ok, thanks for the heads up, hopefully someone can help me with the cpu issue.

Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
I advice to install "load applet or cpumem-applet" so you can get an eye on it most of the time.
"load applet" (Show CPU and memory usage, take screenshots, record screencasts) "cpumem-applet" (Show CPU and memory usage in small status-area icon only) There maybe 2 problems which i don't know which one. 1: After using wifi a battery drain accurs. (wifi switcher must eliminate that cause) 2: Some process taking a huge load on cpu, examine which one does! |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
Same issue happened to another user: here

Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
@CarstenDutch:
1. I used the wifi switcher app to turn off wlan before going to bed. 2. According to battery graph some process was using up 100% cpu and the battery died in a few hours, dont know which one as I was sleeping at that time. @God: ty, here are some of my screens which show the cpu usage and the drain, http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8725/...0052818095.png http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8...0052818092.png |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
You did a fresh PR1.2 flash, so i think this is unlikely to happen again in a short time.
I guess you used wifi-swither from the beginning PR1.0 or later to adress the wifi drain-bug? it is not needed anymore sinds PR1.1.1, i've had the same problem before which annoyed me enourmass! i think this is just a process that got stuck some where, if the problem still persist we will hear from you again. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
I have found the problem, it's hildon-desktop that is using around 15% cpu usage.
I found out because i saw that the battery drained faster in standby mode, and take a look at your top.txt same problem! We need to look if there is a bug submitted with this problem. |

"N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update"
Lucky b****d mine is still working :( think of PR1.2 as Nokia's coupe de grace |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
@CarstenDutch: was away, did you see if the bug has been reported, this is a critical one :/
Maybe revert to the old firmware till this is fixed? |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
It's better if it's reproducible, and then later submit to bugzilla, i have a bugzilla tab opened to fill in the submit.
I did not found any hildon-desktop cpu usage submits. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
I encountered the hildon-desktop cpu usage slow drainage after i played Quake3 and saw that the system resources were freed up for a longer time, it did not refilled the system resources again.
Look at it the next time hildon-desktop take alot of cpu load. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
I think i have managed to find a way to reproduce this but I havent been able to test it a lot as it requires rebooting the tablet.
Have battery graph installed so you can see the cpu usage etc. 1. Reboot the device 2. Make sure that auto lock is turned off 3. Go to the desktop and press the power button 4. Select secure device, do not enter the lock code 5. Put the device in standby 6. Wait for 20 mins 7. Bring the device out of standy and touch outside the lock screen window, it should say device not secured. 8. Open battery graph. Now you will see that the cpu was been used 100% when the prompt for securing your device was left without any input. Note. If you enter the code once, the device wont ask you for the code again when you select secure device (unless you reboot), it is the same case if auto lock is enabled. Someone try this out and confirm so this bug can be reported. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
@samad909,
That is a problem that is not related to the hildon-desktop problem. i also found more stuff in PR1.2 that needs to be addressed and it's time consuming. |
Re: N900 died a couple of hours after PR 1.2 Update
@CarstenDutch:
That is true, but this is a bug which should have high priority too as it increases the cpu usage to 100% till the battery drains, the cpu and battery life could be critically hindered. I will keep an eye on hildon-desktop. Could you check if this bug (the one I reported here) can be reproduced with the steps I mentioned? |

[edited] I could not reproduce your problem, no cpu usage at all. |
