How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
I know most people use A-GPS to quick fix position. But who knows which app can search satellites fast just with bulit-in GPS??
Thanks so much:) |
Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
Turn off A-GPS (to avoid polling), and go outside. Hold the earpiece side of the N900 up, and don't cover the area where the front camera/lux meter/proximity sensor is. Open the keyboard (not sure if that does anything, though.)
It usually connects in a couple/few minutes for me. Or, connect while you're at home/work via Wi-Fi, and leave. There was this thing called minigpsd (it's in fremantle -devel as well, but it's uninstallable.) |

I think it doesn't depend on the app. You can turn off A-GPS in settings. Settings -> Location -> unclick "enable" under "Network positioning". However, this will probably also turn off celltower triangulation so you might wanna leave it enabled. Also, my GPS locs pretty fast. It takes about 5 mins in general. (no internet).

Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
I needed to turn off "always connect" in settings to get it to work well for me. With PR1.2 it seems better than it used to.

Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
For me I can't get the GPS to lock without internet connection, I disabled the Network Positioning tried GPSJinni (plenty of satelittes with above 85% signal), but there is no use I'm also using PR1.2 (flashed it)
Anyhelp please? |
Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
Any GPS program can be used to turn on the GPS module and will immediately show you position once the GPS lock is established (Navit, Mappero, Nokia Ovi Maps, eCoach, GPSJinni, etc.)
What always works for me is to keep the N900 screen on until GPS lock is achieved. You can do it with the Simple Brightness Applet. Depending on whether you've got the lock before or not, it may take from 1 to 15 minutes to get a new lock in an open field. Personally, I found that usually I can get a lock within 5 min., even inside my house. It takes longer however in a moving car, especially if driving on a highway at high speeds. And BTW, I never use A-GPS on the road, as I intentionally blocked the internet connection with my carrier. |
Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
Anyone know why even though I have disabled "Network Positioning" in "Settings" Ovi Maps always fires up an internet connection (to presumably get Network Positioning)? Both Mappero and modRana are well behaved and doesn't do this.

Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
Nokia designed Ovi Maps with the "always connected" philosophy in mind.
As such, it tends to have trouble with the GPS if a connection isn't locked quickly (about 30s ?). It also needs to be online to search for points of interest, and possibly even driving directions. Apparently Nokia did not take into account the fact that people may not have data coverage available (outside service area, outside home country, no data subscription) and still want / need to use the Maps feature. |
Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
I was just on a roadtrip in Norway, and since I'm from Denmark I didn't really want to pay a load of money for using the network.
It worked really great for me just having GPSJinni running all the time to keep the location, and then fire up Sygic when I needed it... It was a bit annoying that Sygic asked about enabling network positioning every time, but it got a fix really fast none the less. I did have the phone in a car charger most of the time though, but it didn't seem to me that GPSJinni was eating that much power when I was walking around with the N900 in my pocket. |
Re: How can I use GPS without connecting to internet?
Guys, I am a novice here. Is the bottom line that the GPS in N900 cannot be used without an internet connection? I was traveling with my device and without an internet connection I could not get the GPS to lock. It would keep saying "Looking for GPS..." I disabled "Network Positioning" but that made no difference. Is there a way to get N900 to work like a real GPS? I called Nokia support and I was told that an internet connection is mandatory for the GPS to work.
