Skype to charge for calls over 3G?

It looks like it.

Edit. But maybe not on N900 - sorry for wasting your time.

honestly, as someone that pays for an unlimited calling skype subscription, I'm not too fussed about skype bringing in a small subscription fee for skype to skype over 3G, provided that skype to skype PC is still free.

ETA: your post is too vague. you haven't included any of the other speculative information that includes verification that iphone customers need to pay the fee to unlock 3G usage (which is something they haven't previously had available like us N900 users do) and that usage on wifi will still be free. more than likely, this is apple's bidding and insistence as part of their "non-mimicing phone functionality" clause on apps and they'll split the subscription profit 50/50 with apple, or more likely as is apple's habit, 30/70.

My post was an image and a link to someone else's blog post of the same image... I've no interest in starting another iphone/android/maemo discussion.

Re: Skype to charge for calls over 3G?

Skype didn't have voice calls over 3G on the iPhone last time I tested it (about one month ago).
They might have added it in a new version for the iPhone.

On other devices it uses 3G like it uses WiFi, so I doubt they'll add a charge for that.

So it seems to be iPhone only from what I understand.

Even though they're just milking the iSheep this is quite upsetting.

They're actively going out of their way to bill for this, they'll have to add features to be able to tell 3G connections from other connections - presumably the client app will have to report this information.

I knew one day Skype would turn evil and it looks like we're seeing the beginnings of it.

As previously mentioned, more than likely this charge specifically for iphone on 3G would be at Apple's request and Apple would be the one with their hands out wanting money in return for the functionality, considering it's functionality they've disabled previously (and it's that reason why GoogleTalk doesn't have an official app - Google refused to hinder the app to wifi only).

When iPad was released, the first thing that happened was that newspapers increased their rates for everyone, not just iPad users. I think it's fair to associate Apple with a move to charge consumers more in general.

This is not likely in Skype's current form as a standalone 3rd party app within the AppStore. Maybe if it's somehow integrated into the iPhone OS.

I don't think Apple directly benefits from this; it only underlines how heavily controllable their system is.

Re: Skype to charge for calls over 3G?

Wether its skype themselves or the networks (in my opinion most likely it will be them) to charge first, it will come in due time. At the moment everyone has 3G enabled phones and devices but majority of ppl dont abuse it or use it at all for that matter.
When everyone starts using skype to make calls for free then the networks will dung out a type of charge or something.
All you can do for now is enjoy it while its still there for free!

Re: Skype to charge for calls over 3G?

don't think it would cost money on N900, as they also announced improvements, but on N900 Skype is still not working stable. so noone would prefer it over regular call (though we don't have regular video call). but if it would work stable, fast and with good quality with any client - i would say, why not?

Re: Skype to charge for calls over 3G?

I think this may be a compromise struck between Skype and telcos to let Skype be used over 3G. I mean it's been around on mobile for sometime, but not in a big way like it would be on iPhone; so rather than the telcos disable Skype over 3G data (L7 blocking, QoS, etc), they'd make it a 'legitimate' compromise with a fee.

Expect the same deal to propagate to all mobile Skype client of any flavor.
