Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
The Opera keyboard is ****ing perfect, both in landscape and in portrait, not to mention the browser itself, while the Maemo virtual keyboard is ****ing **** and doesn't even support portrait mode.
So is there anyway to get the Opera keyboard as the default virtual keyboard in Maemo? |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
I would love this too. It was a nice surprise to be able to browse without swinging the phone around.

Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
I always thought N900's virtual keyboard was useless, well, thought also that having virtual keyboard when you have a physical one was useless.
But Opera's keyboard is so cool that it makes me want to have a slimmer cellphone with a virtual keyboard only! Very well done Opera! |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
So we only need a REAL cool hacker hooking it as main system vkeyboard if possible... Is it possible?
|
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
It has already been stated by an Opera dev.
No. |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
That hack is possible using an application just like that of S60's Dayhand Input.

Well. What do you mean? Maemo5 open OS could not be "hacked" to hook another vk? You couldn't hook another vk? No-one wants to hook another vk? "No", is not a very well documented answer when speaking about a full debian distro, I think... |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
I can't find the exact post, but it was stated it wouldn't be doable because the Opera's keyboard is do integrated to the browser and the N900 uses a whole different system for the system wide virtual keyboard.

Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
You can replace the VKB(there's a handwriting VKB available) but as joppu pointed out the Opera keyboard is built differently from the system-wide keyboard.

But skilled ones can "copy" its behavior and "paste" a new vk. |

man, I'm willing to bet users would even be willing to pay €1-2 for their vkeyboard if Opera recompiled it as a standalone Maemo vkeyboard app in Ovi Store (LOL Ovi store)
Pair this vkb with the working portrait apps and we are starting to have the real portrait experience Nokia promised back in Dec 09 Seriously, kudos to Opera Maemo devs, you guys rock |

Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
Can we get back on topic please? It seems like every little insult now-a-days turns into a brawl.
Basically the question now, is how to get a virtual keyboard that allows you to interact with the background while it's still active (a la pre-Fremantle's stylus keyboard). (And I know the Opera keyboard "port" is not possible. It'll have to be cloned, if anyone bothers.) |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
No, it's not possible as it stands to take the Opera on-screen keyboard and deploy it for use in Maemo 5.
Straight from Opera's mouth. One more just in case you didn't believe the first one. It will have to be reproduced, if anything. And so far, nobody has taken that task. |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
The opera keyboard seems to be a cross between the Nokia 5800 and the dayhand thing. Pretty slick for sure, but not ideal.
Dayhand is about the best I've come across only it doesn't integrate itself quite fully within the native UI. The keyboard itself will be quite easy to code up, but I'm not sure about replacing the built in virtual keyboard, no idea how easy or difficult that would be. |
Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
Can someone post a screenshot of both keyboards so that those of us who don't own the device can see what the excitement is all about? thnx.

Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
I would literally be willing to kill a man (or at least pay a reasonable sum of cash) to have a roughly equivalent system keyboard featuring portrait qwerty and landscape qwerty.

Re: Opera keyboard as default Maemo virtual keyboard?
I request portrait keyboard QWERTY here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...trait+keyboard
It's very important for cell phone! Please Developers! |
