Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
Hi,
I thought that the N900 is able to get the updates over the air and that would mean that you simply can update without the help of any other device (PC/Mac). so why isn't this function used in that way? why do i still need another device with the nokia software installed on it, and why does the N900 software update application show me that there is an update which i can't use with the N900 alone?! cu Assetburned |
Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
I had the same problem with OTA not working though the update showed.
Try uninstalling any apps from extras-devel then update, worked for me. |
Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
i don't know what you mean. i updated 1.2 over the air.
the only requirement is that you have a full battery. |
Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?

My OTA upgrade died like this:

Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
ummmm i updated to pr1.2 over the air with no problems... took about 30 minutes for the download and install. I did nothing special. Maybe theres something wrong with your n900?

Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
I've done all my updates OTA. I have to remove my OpenGLES games and libraries for PR1.2 though.

Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
assetburned, I had the same question as you when I first tried to upgrade to 1.2, but then I searched around this forum and found that I needed to temporarily disable 'extras' and also uninstall several applications (e.g. brainparty) for OTA to work smoothly.
There is a list of the offending apps around here somewhere. Obviously Joorin has a more difficult problem, but perhaps that was just a temporary problem with the downloads.maemo.nokia.org server, at least, let's hope it was! |
Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
ok but shouldn't the updater app say that there isn't not enough space or that there is a problem with some apps, instead of suggesting that it doesn't work?

@Joorin:
don't know if you using wifi, but if not i would suggest it. you also can try downloading the .deb manually and putting them in you apt cache folder and then try again. |
Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
I suspect that the operation too slow messages are just another way of saying there isn't enough room.

Re: Over the Air updating and why isn't it used?
@abill_uk, smurfy
If all the other packages were downloaded properly, why would these fail? And yes, I'm using a WiFi connection. I want to at least try to understand how OTA upgrades work. I did try to go to the same download location with my browser on my stationary computer but was only greeted with a broken certificate and "You're not allowed to view this". @geneven 28GBytes of space isn't enough?! |
