Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
Trying to fix my travails described in a separate thread, I am trying to install Privoxy.
Searching the forum, the best I can find is a reference to someone getting the install working following the instructions here. But when I try to follow those instructions, I get stuck on installing libpcre. The only arm.deb version I can find on the debian repository is this one. But when I try to install it, I'm told it's incompatible. Without it, I can't install Privoxy from the same repository. Without that, I'm stuck with an Application Manager that doesn't work, because I can't make it stop trying to fetch everything from 127.0.0.1 (see the other thread). So: anyone know how to get Privoxy working? |
Re: Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
I installed it directly from a repository:
http://eko.one.pl/maemo mistral user (there's a bora repo there now too, but it doesn't seem to have privoxy. In any case privoxy installed perfectly from the mistral repo. Version 3.0.6-2) |
Re: Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
Sorry, that Howto is way out of date... It was written back in the OS2005 days, when debian or slackware arm binaries were compatible with Maemo.
Since the release of OS2006 and the switch to armel binaries this doesn't work anymore. Software has to be recompiled for Maemo and is best installed from repositories, as TA-t3 pointed out. I really must revamp the installation part, as I guess no one in their right mind would run OS2005 on their 770 nowadays, and N800 users don't even know what it is/was :-) |
Re: Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
So how does one install and use Privoxy on an N800? Do we have to make any changes to Opera?

Re: Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
Ok, found out how...
After installing Privoxy using the Repositories and Application Manager, I had to go to the Control Panel and edit the WLAN connection. In there, near the end of the configuration there is an "Advanced" button, which then shows the Proxy settings. I entered 127.0.0.1 and port 8118 for HTTP and HTTPS. Thereafter, connect on Opera and it worked. |
Re: Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
I am new to the N770, and have not had any problems installing anyting but Privoxy. Can anyone direct me to the proper files? The eko.one site does not download onto my 770. Thank you.

Should you ever encounter problems with downloading from repositories, disable privoxy and try again. I had some problems installing Python. It wouldn't download (download error). After disabling privoxy (remove it completely from proxy settings, not just uncheck the proxy box!) it worked without problems. Also, disable privoxy when you make a backup. If you should restore after a firmware flash, the privoxy setting are also restored before you have a chance to install it. (can be countered by saving the .deb file to a memory card). |

Even though I have been a forum user for an extremely short time, I have to say that I am amazed at the speed and helpfulness of the responses. Thank you very much, I really appreciate the help.

Re: Privoxy on updated N800 OS?
In general application manager downloading works _better_ through privoxy than without it, in my experience.. a listing update tends to stall for a while until those 3 (or 60 or whatever) kilobytes are downloaded, while through privoxy it's almost always instant.
