Major Problem with modest Email - please help
i have the following problem: i set up gmail in the n900 email settings, if i open the email and press "send and receive" i get my emails, everything works nicely. i set it to refresh every hour. the problem is that i never receive emails without pressing "send and receive"!
under settings->email connectivity i have it set to connect to my provider. search interval is set to "never" and i have the internet connection off. whenever an app like omweather needs to refresh, it opens the internet connectivity by itself, refreshes and disconnects. thats what i would expect of the email, but it doesnt! email ist set to: update automatically, updated when connected via any connection and update every hour. under email-accounts->gmail: everything is filled in, i left "use connection specific smtp servers" unticked. whats going on?? |

Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Good morning from Ireland!...
if you are setting your search interval to "never" in email settings then that is exactly what will happen... you will have to sync manually. If you go to OM weather settings, you will see you can do the same; if you were to switch it to "never" as well then that is exactly what you will get: a search interval of never.... just set your email to some interval of your liking (mine is at 30 mins.) and you should be good to go. I hope I helped in clearing that up |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
thanks for your answer!
there is a misunderstanding! the wlan search under settings->internetconnections->search interval is set to "never" the refresh in the email section is set to "1 hour" |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Hey JayBoy,
From Ireland here myself, jesus im hoping you can help me. Got the N900, its really cool but having email probs. In work i connect via a wifi, i put in the Wep key, its accepted and i can browse the web, use witter and barriosquare etc. What I cant do however is get email to refresh, imap is enabled on my gmail, this works at home just not in work. As I said the wep key is valid, i can user the other web apps just email wont work, and also widgets wont refresh such as the facebook widget. Any ideas ? Cheers Colm Quote:

Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
I have the same problem. Can only recieve new emails when i click 'send and recieve' although my update interval is set for every 5mins :(
i use hotmail (not via nokia messaging) and ovi mail. Is there a fix for this or something i'm doing wrong? It only happens since i've updated to PR.1.2. I think someone may have mentioned the email widget has something to do with it? |

Hey there! Yeah sorry, I thought your were referring to your email search interval. The only thing I can think to suggest is that maybe your not set to automatically update via any connection? Did you enter a specific one? |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
its set to "update via any connection"!

Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Hey all
Since I have come to Ireland for the summer from the USA I have noticed that not much of anything works on wifi with my n900. No widgets (omweather, facebook, ap,), no email, and Nokia applications, Ovi, and System software update repositories WILL fail to refresh unless there is a sim connection. I had to wait for me to get my sim with o2 in order for all of the above items worked once I got here. Now every morning I can only get my email to automatically refresh when I manually connect to my 02 network. When on wifi (eircom for me) here in Ireland, it will not work for me. I too am looking for a solution to this. I have tried messing with the ports on my router and still can't get anything working. As stated before though, the other day I was in a local booky here watching some dog races when I connected to their eircom wifi, then suprisingly I just started automatically recieving emails. So this leads me to believe that it is not the n900 but settings within the wifi routers or ISP settings. Sorry I can't help more, but this is what I can say with certainty. |

What I would suggest is to delete your email account, reboot, access your gmail via a desktop just to get gmail up to speed with you, then setup gmail again on your n900. This really should work ;) |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
thx- ok, i`ll try that, but what do you mean with "just to get gmail up to speed with you"?

Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
one observation i made:
when i set the refresh interval to "15" min it changes nothing. but if i start surfing the web, the automatic refresh works..so it seems that it cannot build up an internet connection to refresh by itself, although the omweather app does this perfectly. however the blue notification light doesnt flash, the sms ringtone went off though...really weird.. update: couldnt reproduce that error again, if i surf the web it refreshes. i deleted the gmail account and set it up again on the n900, didnt help, it seems that unlike omweather, it is unable to connect to the internet, refresh and close the internet connection again. |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
anyone else that could help??
|
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
I have the very same problem.
The E-mail application just can't establish Internet connection so it won't sync e-mail if the connection is not already active. There's nothing you can do (set) about it. Nokia says it's not a bug because they expect you to have the connection always active. |

Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Same for me.
My email updates unlogically, when updating manually it doesnt get te mails it should get (send by me where I'm on the cc or distribution list). I have the idea this started after the update - pretty sure actually. Dont have a solution; sorry. Ronald. |

It's possible you have OM set up to connect over GPRS rather than wifi. Also some mobile phone service providers block IMAP email so the only way to get it is over wifi but no application will initiate wifi connection itself |

I really sugest that you delete all your mailboxes and set them up through Nokia Messaging instead of directly through the email servers(gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc..). You wont have to use the "automatic search interval" or anything like that and youll avoid all your problems. Emails are recieved instantly as soon as they are sent by the sender with the automatically update feature disabled. Im sure you wont have any issues then. Its really amazing and works with multiple mailboxes gmail, yahoo, hotmail at the same time in one account.. It is also much faster at syncing than signing up directly with the email servers. So just delete your current mailboxes and select nokia messaging and follow the simple steps.. goodluck! |

Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Well try this for a change
Go to your wirless settings. Choose your settings and click Next till you get to the advanced tab. In the DNS Settings hardcode the IPs from your ISP. My Mail would not even do anyhting when clicking on send & receive (not even pretending to fetch mails) Setting the DNS IP hardcoded to the DNS IP of my ISP did help. (I got the DNS IP from the ISP site because the one asigned to my router was different and did not work) Regards Markus |

Imagine if it were otherwise. You go to the bother of changing your n900 settings to not connect automatically while out of the country and some rougue app opens a connection anyway and downloads to its hearts content, costing you a fortune in roaming charges. You can configure your n900s internet connection to be always on / always on when a wifi connection is available / etc. I dont see the issue. |

I have realized a solution to both of our problems.... if you set the search interval within your internet connections, under settings, to 60 mins. (what i chose to not drain battery) the email will indeed open up the internet connection just like omweather, when needed... For me, I could not send and recieve anything while connected to wifi (eicom/netopia/ireland), or refresh the nokia reopo's, I had to go into internet connections of my wifi connection on my n900 and uncheck auto retrieve dns servers, and manually input the ones from my netopia/isp then everything is working as it should now! repos are refreshing and I can once again send and recieve emails via wifi on my n900! |

only email or conversations can you tell me exactly what to do |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Quote:
1) Click on the E-mail application 2) Click on the top bar and select "New account" 3) Click Next 4) Click "Region" and select your country 5) Click Service Provider and select "Nokia Messaging" 6) Click Next 7) Enter your E-mail address and password (Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail etc...) After that it should set up your email account and you should be done :) Also, when it has completed the set up, go to "Settings" and un-check "Update automatically", because you don't need it anymore since Nokia Messaging pushes your new mail directly to your mobile without needing to automatically check every 15 minutes. If you want to add more E-mail accounts, just follow the same steps and it will add them in the same Nokia Messaging account. |
Re: Major Problem with N900 Email - who can help?
Tip: On my N900, Nokia Messaging does not show up in the list if I'm connected to WLAN. I must switch to cellular network.
