Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go

Right now probably one of the most needed applications would be a complete system BACKUP from N900 to PC capable of backing the whole system files including all contact information, apps personal settings etc etc eMMC included in a format that can be used directly for a complete restore for example a .bin file ready for flashing the device back to a known working point of backup.
This would be very beneficial for everyone from programmers to normal end user's that will take the worry out of installing and experimenting in general knowing if anything goes wrong it can be reversed by a simple restore flash when a loop situation occurs for any reason
I think an application capable of doing this would go a long long way for the N900 for many reasons.

The backup app backed up "all contact information, apps personal settings etc etc in a format that can be used directly for a complete restore."

I think it would be better served to ask the specific problems you have with the current Backup app?

I get all my SMS, Contacts, and applications back after doing a restore from that.

As far as app personal settings.. those get stored in a different location than the root, and thus a normal reflash of your N900 wouldn't affect app settings.. (unless you also flash the eMMC).

The backup app we currently have does not give a file that can be used to flash the N900 back to the point of taking the backup in any way or form as it only backs up certain elements and not the whole system..

But again.. what's the purpose of a "flashable" image if the restore from the built-in app provides everything you need? So that we have 2 ways to backup?

I have had to flash my phone a few times... and have not (personally) noticed anything missing after doing a restore.

Personally, I think an app that integrates social networks. For instance, DMs and facebook messages come as text messages

This I would love to see... I hate having 5 different IM windows for a single contact depending on what network they came from. I know it's easy to see what came from where.. but I'd personally rather my entire communication with an individual be showed in a single screen. Hell.. even adding email would be a kicker.

Because the N900 is involved primarily for development and the way you suggest for backup can sometimes not only be long winded but elements are in fact lost due to eMMC restore AND when someone self creates a looping os stopping the device to start up then a simple one file flash that restores everything would be a much quicker and simpler way to get back to a known working point, taking the worry and frustration out of installing apps developed for testing that do in fact screw up the os for whatever reason.
So it does make sense to be able to produce a flash-able image to pc by a proper backup application, not one that only takes "snippets" from your os.

That would be impossible to do without the site you want the messages from being capable of sending them as a txt message in the first place to the number of the device you want it to arrive.

They won't be text messages. They'd be like text messages. That's how my GF's blackberry works. Her FB messages, text messages, twitter messages and emails all arrive in her "Conversations" type message system

I think that's how the blackberry handles messages so it is not necessarily an "app". Maybe one can be made

Your very wrong to say this because i suggested a very useful app that might indeed win a prize, it was the replies that turned it to what your thinking ... "why the n900 can't do this properly" thread."
Please direct your accusations to the people who did what your saying.

Well, there are only 10 days left. I doubt that anyone will develop a new application in that time. BTW I can't find this N900 category on the web page. Where can it be found?

Then it is maybe written within the os which in this case is a RIM os and another brilliant idea for an application to port apps from Symbian or RIM over to Meamo directly installable and usable to the N900.

I am trying to think of what we miss in the Maemo suite... and we really do have a lot. I'm actually not missing anything but two things that would be nice to have native for Maemo is a video and a audio editing program.

Audacity or Openshot would be nice to have on Maemo.

This isn't right... all that would have to be done is for our current SMS app viewer to take into account more than just SMS. We already configure (with PR1.2) our facebook account in our conversations settings so it gets our contact list.. when we receive messages from a user on facebook instead of using a new conversation window to show it.. just use the same conversation window for all integrated services.

You wouldn't need facebook to do anything special at all.. it's all in how the phone handles receiving the messages already sent by facebook/twitter/etc. It would just display them in the same window as the SMS messages.

MotoBlur on the Cliq (android) does something similar as well I believe.. with all communications with a contact being handled in one window instead of multiples.

Of all the "apps" I've seen requested so far.. this idea has my vote. A touch-friendly, mobile Audacity would be kinda cool too.. but with such a small processor handling audio/video encoding/editing would be a nightmare I think.

I think Nokia has left it for people to develop apps for N900 instead of themselves using that money for bringing Full Ovi Maps and Flash 10.1 to N900.

Well you can probably use dd to create full image like on pc. However, you'll need to boot(phone) into second linux system to restore it.

How about Nokia making either OVI Suite FULLY integrated on all fronts with with the N900 :p

I'm on the beta version and it doesnt recognise the 900 when it comes to conversations

ON a serious note that FMMS for the 900 is a damm fine application dont you think. Certainly saved the devices arse when it comes to mms messages.

Not to mention that photo and video sync is messed up. It syncs the folders called Images and Videos, whereas the N900 uses the folder called Camera or DCIM.
