Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
Right now probably one of the most needed applications would be a complete system BACKUP from N900 to PC capable of backing the whole system files including all contact information, apps personal settings etc etc eMMC included in a format that can be used directly for a complete restore for example a .bin file ready for flashing the device back to a known working point of backup.
This would be very beneficial for everyone from programmers to normal end user's that will take the worry out of installing and experimenting in general knowing if anything goes wrong it can be reversed by a simple restore flash when a loop situation occurs for any reason I think an application capable of doing this would go a long long way for the N900 for many reasons. |

I get all my SMS, Contacts, and applications back after doing a restore from that. As far as app personal settings.. those get stored in a different location than the root, and thus a normal reflash of your N900 wouldn't affect app settings.. (unless you also flash the eMMC). |

So it does make sense to be able to produce a flash-able image to pc by a proper backup application, not one that only takes "snippets" from your os. |

Thanks abill, you drove a thread about nokia handing out prizes to incentivate the programming community into another "why the n900 can't do this properly" thread.

Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
Well, there are only 10 days left. I doubt that anyone will develop a new application in that time. BTW I can't find this N900 category on the web page. Where can it be found?

Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
I am trying to think of what we miss in the Maemo suite... and we really do have a lot. I'm actually not missing anything but two things that would be nice to have native for Maemo is a video and a audio editing program.
Audacity or Openshot would be nice to have on Maemo. |
Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
proper spotify client, proper facebook client, proper support for moonlight/silverlight !!
come on!! |

You wouldn't need facebook to do anything special at all.. it's all in how the phone handles receiving the messages already sent by facebook/twitter/etc. It would just display them in the same window as the SMS messages. MotoBlur on the Cliq (android) does something similar as well I believe.. with all communications with a contact being handled in one window instead of multiples. Of all the "apps" I've seen requested so far.. this idea has my vote. A touch-friendly, mobile Audacity would be kinda cool too.. but with such a small processor handling audio/video encoding/editing would be a nightmare I think. |
Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
They should use the money to improve on ovi navigation (and others) for the N900 instead.
|
Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
I think Nokia has left it for people to develop apps for N900 instead of themselves using that money for bringing Full Ovi Maps and Flash 10.1 to N900.

Well you can probably use dd to create full image like on pc. However, you'll need to boot(phone) into second linux system to restore it. |
Re: Best application for the Nokia N900: $50,000 in cash - 10 days to go
How about Nokia making either OVI Suite FULLY integrated on all fronts with with the N900 :p
I'm on the beta version and it doesnt recognise the 900 when it comes to conversations  ON a serious note that FMMS for the 900 is a damm fine application dont you think. Certainly saved the devices arse when it comes to mms messages. |
