Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

I do really wonder,

do we buy a device to waste our time waiting for its softwares to get completed, is it logic that it has been more than a month since I bought the device and i don't even know, if its front camera and infrared working or not because Nokia didn't spend enough time to develop its software,
is it logic that this massive numbers of negative feedbacks is getting more and more on incompatible software or bug in the system that let you can't even do what you are working on.

i'm really pissed off and disappointed from this device, i'm not using it coz every time i use it, i couldn't get my work done on it in what so ever the field i am using it in,

the battery has to be charged two times daily other wise you have to leave the device on the shelf to save its power

A lot of application bugs and internal problems

and now i can't even remove my applications or install a new ones

thank you Nokia

i partly share you pain.

i guess thats the price we early adopters have to pay.

so you are blaming buggy apps on Nokia. I also don't any high end device with awesome battery life. Sure, the phone has issues but address them logically.

hehe opposite effect for me :) - the n900 has opened a new world of coding up for me ;) - so no boredom here :)

Personally, I love my N900, but then again I'm a debian die-hard.

I'm the opposite of the OP, I have literally stopped using my laptop because with my N900 I can wirelessly log into a server, check to make sure things are working right, tail, whatever I wish to do my job (I'm a Linux administrator.) The fact that I can even browse to the Flash Operator Panel on our asterisk machine with it just rocks. I'd like to see the iPhone or... well hell anything else do that. Android soon enough, but still...

I wonder..when did you buy it? If you bought it before November 2009 you are somewhat excused as their was much hype going on.

But after that, it was very clear that the N900 was intended as a developers and hackers pet. Sure it can be used by normal people, but it's main function is to be hacked and mess around with it, brick it way too many times etc..

And it was very clear that Maemo was a young OS and needed some work, so lack of apps and buggy software was to be expected.

At least that's the idea I got from everywhere I looked after November. Besides I don't mind the buggy software. Actually to me it's not buggy at all. It rarely gives me errors and most errors come after installing from extras-devel. The front camera can be used and does work in video calling and an app called mirror. The IR module can be used to control DSLR cameras, or a dreambox..or whatever or with Irreco although none of the appliances I own are listed there :(

That's what I'm feeling too. When I'm using the camera or browsing flash websites(overclocked) I think it is the best device in the work but then I'm hit with stuttering transitions when switching between apps, or the phones just slows to a crawl for no reason, it just makes me want to curse the world... Unfortunately there are no gsm android phones with a camera as good a the one on my n900 and that's why I can't jump ship...

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

as i said from other threads, the n900 gave me an expression like; "what the hell is this?" or/and "this is overwhelming! i need more research to use this phone on the fullest! a Challenge! I like it!"

in short, a very new and awesome experience for me, new OS, hardware??? and most of the apps are from developers and men! i love the way that i am dealing with the person who develop the app i installed and helping me solve my problems! (unlike famous companies who make apps that will respond to you, via e-mail)

EDIT: if i got enough knowledge, i might be uploading my own app on the repos too. :D

Agreed, best thing ever and my laptop only comes out when I want a bigger keyboard.

I notice Vodafone have already pulled N900 from its display boards. :-(

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

i don't think the problem is the N900...the problem is Nokia.
the N900 is a good phone otherwise you wouldn't of brought it. like myself and others your frustrations most likely stem from the lack of apps, games, widgets etc that have been commercially released by nokia and developers who are already on their books (i.e EA, Digital Chocolate etc). whilst nokia do support with firmware updates, most of us just want them to provide a boastful ovistore experience for their N900 users. whether this will happen or not is another thing...?
i've recently been looking at the commerical support the n8 is getting, and to be honest it is depressing to think that on a new symbian platform (bear in mind maemo5 was also new at the time) the development support is overwhelming in comparison with the n900 :(
if it wasn't for this community the n900 would be rendered useless in my opinion.

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

ive had this phone 4 months i brought it due to the fact on my last 3 phones ive used the internet alot more than the phone function and since it arrived i cant put it down im clocking up 6+hours a day surfing on it regularly.

my laptop has a thick layer of dust on it due to being obsolete since i got this.i absolutly love it im no techy but i am a geek at heart and love finding the solutions to any problems i have with the help of the net and the community.

i have a few gripes sure, the battery life sucks the media player is missing 3 key features imo,i want flash 10 and nokia are slow promising lots and not delivering but i can live with that because i spend more time using this device than any other phone ive ever had.

i reckon im gonna wear out the keyboard im on it so much theres just so much to love and im finding and learning new things all the time . if i lost or broke this phone i would want another one.

now i just wish i had the aptitude to delve deeper into its capabilitys.

this device is just awesome as a palm top computer not so great as a phone but thats not my main use for it so im extremely pleased with my purchase:D

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

Sadly I got to agree...

...but as more and more geek's buy this phone the more decent apps we are gone see, the truth is even with the lack of applications out there the n900 still truly rocks and has more potential then any other mobile device currently out there, even for gaming, shame most mobile software vendors continue to not show commercial interest in producing apps for this phone, maybe they just see the n900 as some kind of geek's phone and are afraid we are not got spend money buying apps...

So, If you want this phone to take off start to contact software vendors producing apps that you would like to buy, and asked them where can you buy the application which you like, the more commercial interest people start to show the more commercial apps we are gone see.

You have the right idea but wrong reason. Companies and most commercial developers are not developing apps for the N900 is due to its small userbase. The number of users isn't worth the time.

I love this device, but I understand that the average user that see it on the main nokia web site expects a rock solid and complete device.

At least mediaworld in Italy, in Benevento town is more correct and puts it on the "internet connectivity" and not on "smartphones" ;)

As a linux geek (hoping), I'm very HAPPY to know that the big part of the closed components of maemo is going to be opened by meego!, so after a begin whining about that, now I'm fully satisfied with that device!)

I hope you'll be able to sell it and gain some money to buy another device near to your needs, but again, I may feel your pain.

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

The N900 is the most amazing phone i have ever used :-)

Still totaly happy with it.

Even on the software side, never had a phone with a better IM client (pidgin). Ok I only used S60 devices for the last well nearly 10 years now (staring with the 7650). On there is so much more really usefull software for the N900, than S60 3rd or 5th. Sure, that demands on how you look at things, where you came from.

But well, the N900 is the first mobile phone (at least from one major comapny with decent hardware) with a real desktop operating system. That changed everything.

Sure there are a lot of dispointed people here, I think they were just bad informed. Sure Nokia somehow suggested things which aren't there.

And well, I am not totaly blind, I know the N900 has some issues. But is there a phone without such? A phone which is equaly awesome?

me personally, am the exact opposite of the op,
i have never used linux before getting the n900, I got it direct from nokia, I received the phone in december. I never expected it to be soo good! I still dont know much about linux, i just know the easy commands. and thats it. this device is perfect for me. I now only use my laptop for Word processing and excell, etc. but most other things I do in this device. it was a great device even before the updates.
Nokia has given us a taste of what could be the future in many devices in the n900.

excuse me for my poor english.

kind regards

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

So the N900 has a small user base, this contradicts other posts that tell us that the N900 has shifted more units than expected, so if it had sold less than expected we would have expected Nokia to can support back in January.

And what techhead is going to buy an N900 now? knowing that Nokia has switched OS's surley they will just hang fire for the next new hyped up ground breaking unfinished Nokia.

One bit of good news is that Nokia are finally releasing the N900 on the Indian market, and there are some good inovative coders there who will join the maemo ranks.

The n900 is a milestone! n900 owners are lucky that nokia has not a new device around the corner and that the n900 is the official meego arm developer platform. I'm quite sure that nokia/community efforts will make that device perfect!

I own a Motorola DROID, myself. I don't really want to equate the two but, unfortunately, Nokia made it unavoidable to group a phone with what should have been an Internet Tablet. That being said, the N900 is an incredibly bad phone and probably an incredibly good portable computer. I don't like the added cost, bulk, battery drain and don't trust GSM for security so being stuck with the cellular radio was another reason for MY choice to avoid the N900. But if what you wanted to know is where it seems to be better compared to the Motorola Droid in particular... here's my opinion:

I don't own an N900, but from what I've seen, in general (blow-by-blow) it's mostly pretty evenly matched. On the hardware side, it clearly has a MUCH better camera and a much better keyboard than my Motorola Droid. Not that the N900 has a particularly good keyboard--but the Motorola Droid's is ghastly. You can also easily find and use bluetooth keyboards with the N900, which is still unexplainably difficult on any Android system. (I managed to find a bluetooth keyboard and have drivers--but even then it's still awkward.) The N900's CPU is slightly faster, but not by much. Beyond that, I can't think of anything better on the N900's hardware.

On the software side, the operating system is a Debian-based (ie: much more libre) operating system so there's much more flexibility and it feels more like a real computer, whereas the Droid feels like a phone with apps (which, really, is the point of the DROID phones... they're a phone first). To that end, the DROID has many more applications but the same java write-once-run-everywhere ecosystem is also imperfect and doesn't always look or run correctly because of android-specific quirks. By contrast, apps written for the Linux desktop are probably much more easily recompiled and adapted to run without crashing on the N900 (weird formatting and graphics in the translation to small screen aside). Certainly, command line apps and scripts will work with very, very little modification. On the Android side, command line is almost entirely forbidden (although there are many applications to make a command line almost unnecessary, like some excellent SSH apps for example). Tethering is incredibly easy on both (or so I hear, for N900.. I use OpenVPN to tether my Mini9 to my Droid over USB very easily--simultaneously providing Internet connectivity as well as charging my phone.)

On the support front, it seems to me that the phone app and general customer support for the N900 just seems incredibly.. lacking, frustrating or outright awful depending on who you talk to. :) The Motorola Droid has any number of walk-in Verizon, Walmart, etc. stores you can go to where you purchased it to have it replaced or repaired IMMEDIATELY without shipping involved. Even if it costs money, at least you'll have been taken care of immediately and can walk out with a working phone and never miss a call, a podcast or whatever else you use your device for. Having data everywhere is pretty much a given on both platforms with the DROID seeming to have a slight edge on data speed in the best case scenario for either device.

Anyway... that's all I can think of for now. I rather like my DROID.. but it's just my phone. Not a suitable replacement for my N800 and, despite the cellular phone in the N900, I'm not sure it's right to compare those two.

Hope that's what you wanted.

Thats exactly how I feel. Sometimes I think this is the greatest devic ever but sometimes I thinks it a pile of pooo - especially when the sound starts to stutter, I miss calls because the phone app is slow to launch, media player quirks etc. Its a shame that Nokia just wont put their considerable muscle to a device with such great potential. There is also the lack of communication from Nokia, the Ovi store debacle. Yet overall I still love the device and I cannot think of a better alternative right now. Throw any audio or video format on this thing and it delivers, try coding in Java, Python, Cplus etc, no problem, connect to that windows media stream and plug to your tv, bam, its there. Then there is a diversity of apps from the community from KMplayer to gpodder, zoutube and mediabox. A crazy device made by crazy engineers for crazy people - remember the sick viral ad the n900 launched with? How apt!. I love and hate it in near equal measure but I love it more than any other.

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

I only ordered mine a few days before the announcement about the move to Mee-Go, which won't be officially available on th n900, and received it the same day. I was brassed off at first. But, I love it. Great device. I guess we won't get iPlayer now, but...

I like Debian, I like Ubuntu, and if there's a chance of getting Lubuntu onto it, and still be able to use it as a phone some day - who cares? Even if its dual-booted or running in a shell (who wants to answer a phone while watching TV?) - because I doubt I'd download TV progs over mobile broadband anyway, I'd do that on WiFi.

Sure, if Mee-Go gets to run on it, cool; if stuff for Mee-Go gets ported back to Maemo, cool. If Nokia don't support it... who cares? I don't remember the last time I used support beyond downloading updates.

I've been buying computers, PDAs, mobile phones, etc. for 25 years, and seen them all come and go. Atari ST, 386, 486, Pentiums, Psion, IPAQ, Clie, Nokia phones I cannot remember the numbers of, Nokia phones I could use as a modem to read webmail ten years ago. One thing I know the minute I open the box - it will be superceded within days, and if I'm lucky it won't be obsolete within weeks. I have 10 year old Dells running Debian and Ubuntu - a 4 year old Compaq lappy that runs faster on Ubuntu 10.04 than it ever did on XP.

Thing is, they do what they did when bought - and in that respect are little different from any other phone or PDA.

It is all relative, and looking at the prices people are still asking for n810s on eBay, they will be a little technology gem over the next few years, because there is nothing else out there like them. I've looked. I looked before I bought, and I'm still looking, and there's nothing. I'm tempted to get another, one to use and one to play with and break. But I'd never get away with another one without getting my covetous partner one as well.

Maybe that's an idea - people who are unhappy with theirs could put them up for offer to people who would like a second one just to play with.

M.

Hah.. I still have an Atari 1040STe with a color Atari SCM1224 monitor. Nice nostalgia there

Somehow appropriate to bring it up here and remember people clinging onto it as if it could never die even while the ship was sinking. :) In that respect, support WAS important to help keep a platform relevant.

i dont like my n900 anymore. sure its nice to hack the system. but phones like htc and iphone dont need hacks because there is an app for everthing.

asides that i seem to be one of the few to have 5 dead pixels on the middle of the screen an 2 brighter spots on the right. like fingerprints underneath the screen.

battery needs a charge every 4 hours when i use the phone for browsing the internet, checking mail and playing a game...

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

As much as I do like my N900, it isn't the device I had hoped. Irrespective that we were the early adopters, the support for the N900 is poor - apart from the talented developers on here. I bought the 'phone' based on having good internet connection and speeds, phone capabilities, email, media player and a rather hefty storage capacity. Apart from the apps people have developed on here and beyond, the apps from Nokia as pitiful and an embarrasment compared to other software platforms. When my N900 became bricked, and the couldn't flash the emmc, Nokia repaired it and said it was down to downloading third party applications. The only applications I downloaded were the ones in the finished respositry on here, as I never would use or try to use the red pill mode on it - out of fear on damaging the phone. But if you want any sort of application, you have to download them off here as the ones in OVI are poor. Don't get me started on the maps. That is just another embarrasment for Nokia.

The N900 has the capabilites of becoming a superb device, but Nokia need get their backsides in gear to support and put more development available for this device.

johnel 2010-06-04 07:42

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

What a stupid thread title.

Maybe you should have considered what was most important to you before you bought the n900.

Back in 2009 I nearly bought an android phone then discovered the n900.

The two important factors to me were:
(1) Must be open source in some way (Linux and/or development system)
(2) Must have physical keyboard

Then I discovered the n900 has a tv out. Then I bought it.

I am fully aware the n900 has shortcomings and I am still happy with it. PR1.2 added much needed polish to the software.

I understand not everyone is happy with the n900 and that's fine.

But to moan about non-smooth transitions of the screens or "slow" multitasking/task-switching is bordeline OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

Re: Nokia should compensate its customers on N900

Dears,

My problem with N900 is not the device, but the quality of its tasks and functions, plus the internal errors and the software crashes

for example: i'm facing now a problem that in my application manager,
when i open it it tells me " No application available"

so i can't download or update anything new now

the worse thing that i can't even uninstall a program as the same application manager crashes and gives me " application will close, interal error"

does anyone of you have a solution for this

and again. and i do really appreciate the device but suffering the lack of it's functionality

appreciating your feedback

n900 is a device that promises more than it delivers

this is not a problem of "research" is a problem of unfair (deceiving) marketing and of bad product (buy bad i mean not working 100% as expected)

problem is that they all do that

we want new products and the market is in a hurry to beat the competition
