Hmm, so I guess we know the main reason now why a new update was released. ;)

News: Rhapsody music service now available for N800!

Another milestone:

:)

EDIT: as usual, the news and the service are out of sync. I don't see any reference to Rhapsody on the N800 page...

Reggie 2007-03-27 13:53

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

I actually posted the news on the main page a few minutes before. We must have been cross-posting. :)

Thanks Texrat.

lol.

Looks like Tableteer hasn't caught up with the news either. Sure wish PR folks would get their act together...

What about none US consumers?

I would give them until the end of the day to get it up "on-time."

lol Will... yeah, after that they're no longer "current". ;)

Anybody have any luck installing rhapsody? doesn't seem to show in the application manager

Texrat 2007-03-27 17:07

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Yeah, as I said, I think the PR folks jumped the gun. It may just be a timezone issue, though. We'll know by tomorrow. ;)

EDIT: Ha! Rhapsody just showed up on Tableteer.

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

I have never used Rhapsody, so can someone answer these questions.

1. Does this mean the entire Rhapsody catalog is available for free to N800 users?
2. Can you download the music to your SD card and play it without a wifi connection?

Figures, the one day I leave my tablet at home so I can get work done at work. Let us know what you think. Is everything free or do they require a subscription for anything?

EDIT: I found some info on their membership plans:

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Tableteer says "Try it for 30 days risk free" - so it's not free (just a free trial)? No mention at all that this is or will become a pay-for service in the press release.

Texrat 2007-03-27 17:37

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

I will start a new thread in the N800 folder since this is no longer "news". ;)

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Just tried installing Rhapsody using the one-click install option in Tableteer, but the package appears to be missing so I guess we're still waiting for all the concerned parties to get their act together on this. The one-click install file contains:

Code:

[install]
repo_name = Nokia Catalogue
repo_deb_3  = deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/    bora user
package  = rhapsody

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Ok have successfully dled. This is really quite a nice product. It seems to be the entire catalogue, the interface is the same as media streamer, you can control it with your fingers. 30 day trial is probably based on a device id or something cos I didn't have to enter any information.
I recommend you download and try it if interested. I can't find any kind of sync its probably just streaming.

Texrat 2007-03-27 17:52

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Mil, try again. Worked perfectly for me (I did experience an unusually long pause though after auto repository setup). See my new thread in N800 folder.

I'm in Heaven with mobiledivide above. This is killer app territory-- finally.

Why isn't this available to the 770? What does Rhapsody needs that's specific to the N800?

Texrat 2007-03-27 18:25

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Really not sure, gnuite. That's a question for Ari Jaaksi or someone similar...

I went to the Rhapsody site from my XP home computer and I signed up for their free account.
When I used that login information from N800's version of Rhapsody, I recieved "login error".

Nope, app manager still fails with the error "Unable to download. Application package not found".

Manually installing from xterm confirms the package "rhapsody" can't be found. Very peculiar, maybe it's a caching problem. Have now downloaded the .deb manually and installed from a file. :)

I just activated the 30 day free trial upon startup directly from the n800, I didn't use any external device.

Is Rhapsody just for streaming music? Can you download songs to the N800 for use when you are not online?

On your home computer you can have a free Rhapsody account.
On the N800, the Rhapsody account is free for 30 days then you must pay.
I was trying to log in with my free Rhapsody account information using the N800, no go. :(

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Consider, though, that we're talking 2 separate clients/applications. The N800 is strictly mobile, so it's going to rely on an account type that supports that.

Terve,

Or get an American friend that has an American bank account. I live here in Finland but purchase everything via my bank, to include: iTunes, Amazon, etc.... It is a hassle the way they set this up though for non-US N800 owners.

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Rhapsody has been around for quite awhile..I've been paying them something like 9.99/mo for the last 3 yrs or so and love the service. I signed into the Rhapsody acct on my N800 with my user name for my existing Rhapsody acct and it works fine. However the available catalog doesn't seem to be as complete as what you can get on a computer.

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

Cnet news article discussing a Real Networks announcment of Rhapsody-based partnerships with various CE companies such as TiVo, Nokia and Slim Devices... I seem to be the ideal customer for Real Networks as I own gadgets from all these companies! Such a shame I can't receive the service!!! :(

Terve, terve

Nice review.

Were you able to add other services to the streaming media player. So far I have only been able to add Rhapsody, and I really do not like Real products that much.

As far as I see, Rhapsody is a dedicated application, even though I guess it uses the same UI as the Nokia media streamer.

Thought so. So the Nokia media streamer is pretty much useless then I guess.

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

I simply installed it and selected the 30 day trial. and now I can play all kinds of music! very nice. (using the applications manager)

I didn't really understand how it works at first, I never gave signed up for anything. So I looked at the user account settings.
And it seems that my user account is my "N800 Wifi MAC adress@nokia.com"

I think it works really really well. What I don't understand is what is this "US only" thing? I'm from Holland and could install and run the application without any problems

Running it and connecting is not the problem. Paying for the content after 30 days is the problem. US iTunes prices are different than European prices. Thus, you need a either a US bank account, or a credit card issued by a US bank or agency.

Re: Rhapsody on the Nokia N800

I downloaded Rhapsody , waded through all the fine print and then decided to uninstall it. I hate getting involved in paying for services that the vendor doesn't tell me up front what the cost will be. I also don't like the legal restrictions associated with it. I think maybe if I knew for sure that one monthly fee would cover both my Nokia downloads and my computer downloads and I knew what the fees and service quality was like before giving them my credit card number, I might do it.

The basic cost is 9.99/mo and if you listen to music at all..it's well worth it. Who cares about owning music when you can listen to just about anything anytime

I agree with you in principle, but in practice the Rhapsody service has too limitations making it not very useful for me:
  1. No way to listen music while offline (flying or whatever)
  2. Very limited music selection

Now, if I could "cache" music to a memory card things would be slightly more interesting...
