n900 How to install downloaded application

Hi,

I downloaded Angry Birds level pack from the OVI website to my phone.

the phone downloaded the programe & wanted to save it in my Documents folder so i created one called Games.

When I select the download file I get :

Select an application from the list to open file 'angrybirds-levelpack1_1_0_0_armel.deb'

then a lst of progames, including the orginal Angry Birds, but file does not run.

Never done this before & very much a newbie - please help... but be basic :) Thanks

Do you have Angry Birds installed?

I've just done the same thing this morning, paid for th level pack from ovi, and had the same result. I have the angry birds game installed already but the level pack just won't install. I'm very sad :( Please help.

What does it say when you try to install angry birds level pack?

If you dont get any errors whilst installing but cant see the levels you have bought, you might not of yet completed the "1st world" on the free part of angry birds yet and so cannot access the new levels.

That's odd, it should automatically launch App Manager and install it (since PR1.1.1). All I can suggest is installing rootsh (via App manager), then, in X Terminal, running:
Code:

root
dpkg -i /home/user/MyDocs/Games/angrybirds-levelpack1_1_0_0_armel.deb

Re: n900 How to install downloaded application

I'm not getting an error... but i'm getting nothing - it also shows no sign of installing. And yep I've finished all 21 levels of the initial free game.

Right I found and have run the following in XTerminal to install it:

sudo gainroot
dpkg -i MyDocs/.documents/angrybirds-levelpack1_1_0_0_armel.deb

and hey presto - it's installed. How come this was so difficult... surely this should work automatically when you launch it with app installer?? :-S

It's a confusing piece of kit sometimes...

Did you disable the Ovi repo in App Manager?

I think this might have been my problem. I checked in the System Repository of App Manager and version 1.1 was still in the 'not installed but you can if you like' list... maybe this caused it?

Thanks anyways folks. :)

and nope it's enabled... I'm happy I got it installed now (even though I had to do it manually) in spite of the fact it's taken me all morning to do.

Thanks everyone.

Yes so you are still on pre PR 1.1. I should really update to 1.2 (though I am not sure how hard that will get, without flasher. Going from 1.0 to 1.2)

I'm going to sound ultra stupid now :( but how do I find the firmware and attempt to update it... I can't find it in the app manager... i've searched in the 'all' category for anything maemo related and it's not come up. God I feel a bit thick...

oh and i've got the maemo.org and maemo.org extras catalogues enabled... along with nokia system software updates and ovi?

You might have to flash it
http://www.maemofanatics.com/how-to-...ur-nokia-n900/

Get correct firmware from http://www.maemofanatics.com/how-to-...ur-nokia-n900/

It should just show up as "Maemo 5" as I recall, and should show up under "Update" in App Manager. You can check what version you have installed by looking at the Version string in Settings/About product, or use the excellent Healthcheck app which will give you both the version number and the PR number.

Unfortunately in it doesn't show as available in update... i'm thinking the version I have is old old as i've not done any kind of system update since the first week I got the phone... my version is 2.2009.51-1.205.1... looks massively old to me... am thinking i'll be needing to flash it like Nosa suggested if it's not showing up.

(I kept the downloaded level pack backed up on my PC just in case it fancied me paying for it again post-flash ;-)

Thanks for your help and patience Nosa and Rob1n... those of us willing to learn need patient teachers and we will get there :-)

Very odd that you didnt get an update - but a flash every now and again is good :) - cleans out the muck and helps things carry on correctly :)

Good to hear it is all working.

Not sure why you'd want to disable it, but you can disable repositories in App Manager by tapping on the title bar and selecting the "Catalogues" option, then selecting the Ovi repository and checking the "Disabled" option.

I'm not sure what you're asking about here. You can find out what version of the Maemo OS you're running from "About product" in the Settings app. You can see the version and repository of an application by selecting it in App Manager and looking at the details.
